Fishmonger 1911

This group, with 21 household in the 1911 census, is descended from Elizabeth Kipling, via her sons Lionel and James. Elizabeth was most likely the daughter of Joseph and Mary Kipling (see “ 1911”). Lionel and some of his descendants were fishmongers in in the 19th century. James and his family were shipbuilders, moving to West , Whitby and, in the 20th century, to Birkenhead.

John William

John William initially worked as a herbalist in Gateshead, where a son James was born (I have not found any record of a marriage, however).

They were briefly in Glasgow…

Glasgow 1881

…followed by spells in Hartlepool, where a second son was born…

The trail then goes cold, until James married in 1902, curiously naming his father as Thomas William and stating that both he and his father were ‘artistes’.

James’s occupation was expanded to ‘music hall artist’ when a son was born.

Casmer (or Casimer) was the second name of Wilhelmina’s father. Daughters Adelina Theodora (1903) and Margaretta Florence (1904) preceded him. James was then describing himself as a labourer.

St Paul’s, .

St Paul’s, Middlesbrough.

In 1911, John Casmere was living in lodgings(#82)….

.. and sister Adelina was living with her maternal grandfather (#274).

It seems likely that William and Elizabeth were the couple describing themselves as ‘medical specialists’ in Widnes, Lancs at this time and claiming to have been born in New (#169).

This is because cousin Martha Snowden was born Martha Kipling, the daughter of Joseph Kipling (#43), who married a Frederick Snowden. Mary E Snowden was their daughter. Who knows what snake-oil he they were peddling!

What happened to William and Elizabeth after this is not known. However, son James served in the army during WW1.

Adelina married in 1930; her mother and her sister Margaretta were witnesses.

James was still working the music halls in 1939.

My grandfather Robert Kipling was killed on the Thetis. My mum was 6 months old when he died, my nan was left to bring up 4 children on her own, holding down 3 jobs to make ends meet. There was thousands of pounds in a trust fund for these people but my nan told me that if she needed anything you had to go and beg the solicitor in Hamilton Square and you never got much, only half of what you really needed. So many women gave up and struggled on and brought their children up alone. The money disappeared. It's in a bank somewhere, but nobody knows where. I feel that not enough was done to save these men and we should have an inquest into the deaths now and we may see that there was a big cover up and someone should pay for leaving these women to bring all the children up in poverty.

Appendix : Newgate Street

“In the 1851 population census, Newgate Street (that is, to the junction with South Church Lane) had 166 households, some obviously well-to-do, for example the 'Architect, surveyor and accountant' and the 'Chemist, grocer and confectioner.' Many of these households were in the crowded courts opening off Newgate Street containing coal miners, hawkers and a variety of 'trades' such as mangle-woman, straw bonnet maker, nail maker, rag-gatherer, strolling fiddler, staymaker and travelling tinker. The courts opened through arches into crowded yards which must have had very little light and air, and primitive sanitation. 'In the courts and alleys, one or two privies are alloted in common to all the houses with open cess pits behind them.' In Newgate Street there was a model maker who worked at the Canney Hill pottery. There was Mr. Hollis, Printer and Bookseller, and his nephew, young Cherrett, bookbinder. There was Mr. Brotherton who lived in Beethoven House. There were, among others, an ostler, a retired roper, a brass founder, a tea traveller and three Chelsea Pensioners. What, I wonder, did the Vegetable Doctor do?” [Bishop Auckland in the 1850s. Barbara Laurie (1996)]
