at Dalton Piercy, Elwick and Hart Produced for the Villagers by Hart and Elwick Churches Rev. Canon Janet Burbury, The Vicarage , Hart, Hartlepool, TS27 3AP [email protected] Tel 01429 262340 Mob 07958 131271 Dear Friends Our churches are setting their 2019 budgets and deciding how much to offer the central funds which pay for all our legal structures, training, vicarages, stipends, church schools, safeguarding training and so on. Elwick and Hart try hard to raise our giving each year whilst bearing in mind the cost of maintaining our buildings, insurance, heating, resources, office equipment etc. Can we make money and our human economy sacred? Money can be the enemy of our better instincts blocking our generosity as we listen to that internal voice, “I can’t afford to”. Money is never a popular subject. Greed for it makes humanity raid the earth’s resources with too few courses of action to secure its sustainability and when politicians seek money rather than public good we call them worse than dirt. It’s been said that we cannot serve both God and Mammon. I know money do wonders to help society but on balance we more often than not feel those plastic looking folding notes are the root of many evils. Perhaps the biggest problem of money is the way we’ve come to see the physical aspects of life as separate from the sacred and holy. Once people decided that their folklore gods left their for- ests to live in the skies we started to think God is up there out of our world sitting on the clouds out of reach to us below. Can money be sacred? Jesus often talked about money and the way it can separate us from each other and from God. Money is an abstract thing, just a few symbols on a bit of paper or a list of figures in a bank. It can move without us even seeing or touching it online. It’s abstract, like a spirit and it governs us. In a recession money disappears and the tune to which we all dance, disappears too. Without money we become dispirited. We seem to have installed a ruling power in money that is soul- less, ungodly and unnatural. If only we could see money as a gift. To gift something (to give away) is to leave you empty – but that void pulls at others to encourage them to give to you as humanity hates emptiness. Giv- ing directs others to offer and so you receive their gift so it connects us together. A modern money transaction leaves no further obligation which separates us from each other once the transaction is over, whereas a gift exchange is open-ended leaving a tie of expectation and hope of reciprocation between people. If all things in the world are sacred then I wonder if we could manage the problems of money differently by seeing it as a gift system. In the beginning God made the world and gave us do- minion over all the plants and animals – what a gift?! What do we give back to God in return? On a lighter note (excuse the pun): A well-worn £5 note and a similarly distressed £50 note ar- rived at the office to be taken out of circulation. As they moved along the conveyor belt to the shredder they chatted. The £50 note reminisced about its extensive travels. “I’ve had a good life, I’ve been to Paris, New York, the finest restaurants in London and even cruised around the world” “Wow said the fiver, that’s impressive”. “So, tell me, says the £50 note, where’ve you been in your lifetime?” “Oh, I’ve been to the Methodist Church, The Anglican Church, The Catholic Church, the Assembly of God Church and the United Reformed Church…” and the £50 note says “What’s a church?” Every blessing – Revd Janet Regular Church Services ST PETER’S, ELWICK HALL 1st Sunday in the month: 10 am ~ Family Service with Holy Communion.
