• Attempt to Demonstrate a Commitment to Globalization

• Locking in Consumption at Home The CIIEO is also a big step in the continuation of China’s “proactive import policy.” In November 2017, the government announced it was slashing tariffs on 187 consumer products, which, as the Chinese finance ministry said, were in “short supply domestically,” in order to support the “upgrade of domestic supplies.” An overarching rationale is believed to be the ongoing restructuring of the Chinese economy by boosting domestic consumption.

• Power Projection

The Diplomat in Spain - Feb 13, 2018 One hundred companies in China International Import Expo presentation http://thediplomatinspain.com/en/one-hundred-companies-in-china-international-import-expo- presentation/

More than a hundred Chinese and Spanish companies and institutions attended yesterday at CEOE’s headquarters in Madrid the presentation of the China International Import Expo (CIIE), which will be held from November 5 to 10 in the city of Shanghai.

The meeting, in whose organization Casa Asia also participated, was preceded by the signing of a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in projects of common interest, which was signed by the vice president of CEOE and president of CEIM, Juan Pablo Lázaro, and by the deputy director General of the Department of Europe of the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China (MOSCOM), Zhai Qian.

Lazaro stressed that the exhibition represents a great opportunity for Spanish companies that want to market their products, technologies and services in one of the most thriving markets in the world. For his part, Zhai Qian stressed that it is the first promotional event of the Fair that takes place worldwide.

The Chinese ambassador, Lyu Fan, said that the exhibition wants to promote economic globalization and contribute to the construction of the Belt and Road.

It's rarely the case in the world that a developing country like China chooses to hold an import-themed expo.

The expo will not only provide new opportunities for countries around the world to expand export to China, but also create a platform for countries to engage in international trade and share business opportunities with each other. It represents China’s sincere wish to open its market to the world, and shows China’s active role as a major power in undertaking the responsibility of pushing forward economic globalization.

The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, better known as COMAC, unveiled the extent of its activities for the first time on Thursday, showing off a complex of more than 110 buildings. In addition to the avionics, G.E. has also collaborated on the engines, while Honeywell is providing auxiliary power systems, wheels, brakes, fly-by-wire controls and navigation equipment. For China, the C919 is just the beginning. Even if the plane proves less fuel- efficient than Western alternatives, the state-controlled airline industry may still be required to buy it, and the Chinese aviation market in the coming years is expected to rival only the American market in size and perhaps surpass it. COMAC is already looking past the C919 to the design and manufacture of a wide-body jet that would compete with larger, more profitable planes like the Boeing 747 and the A340. Steven Lien, the president for Asia at Honeywell’s aerospace division, said that Russia and China were in the final stages of negotiating a plan to jointly design and produce it. Honeywell expects $15 billion in sales to the C919 program during its 20 or more years of production. The Commercial Aircraft Corp of China — or COMAC for short — hopes to one day rival Boeing and Airbus with its passenger jets, which include the narrow-body C919 plane and regional jetliner ARJ21. The state- owned firm has secured more than 700 orders for the 168-seat C919, which flew for the first time in May. The ARJ21, operating for more than a year, has seen more than 400 orders.

C919 is Just the START...

Popular Science - Jun 5, 2017 China and Russia are teaming up to create the next generation of jumbo jet https://www.popsci.com/china-russia-develop-jumbo-jet China and Russia want to build a jumbo jet similar to those offered by Airbus and Boeing. Last month they officially launched the China-Russia Commercial Aircraft International Corporation (CRAIC), a group that will spend between $13 billion and $20 billion building a 280-passenger, twin-aisle, wide-body jet.

China Daily - Aug 22, 2017 COMAC sets up major investments for future http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/business/2017-08/22/content_30940595.htm Earlier this month, the latest round of funding for COMAC was announced when Huatai Asset Management injected 15 billion yuan ($2.25 billion) into the State-owned aircraft manufacturer. This followed a 10 billion yuan fund put together in May by the Asset Management Association of China, and more than 40 private equity companies to finance projects between COMAC and its suppliers. "The injection of capital is significant for the commercial aircraft industry in China," said Lin Zhijie, an aviation industry analyst and columnist at carnoc.com, one of China's largest civil aviation web portals. "The research and development of new products needs a large amount of money and these funds will have a profound and lasting impact on the growth of aircraft manufacturing," Lin added. Lin is convinced this will make a huge impact on the industry and for domestic passenger aircraft, as well as other high-end manufacturing sectors in China. Leading aircraft corporations need a highly complex supply chain. They simply act as a host, surrounded by an army of suppliers that make an array of components, such as engines, landing gear, seats and control panels. "As the C919 has already made its , the next step for COMAC is to increase the localization rate of homemade aircraft components, which will enable more domestic suppliers to produce the parts," Lin said. "But most producers don't have enough money for their R&D work. With the support of the fund, domestic suppliers can bring in more advanced technology from abroad through investments, and mergers and acquisitions," Lin added. "This will in effect help domestic companies to grow faster and produce more competitive products."

The demonstrator will be used to help validate the engine’s advanced technologies, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) says in a news release. Looking Ahead...

Bloomberg - Sept 25, 2017 China Could Seize a Bit of the Skies - With orders from the developing world, the country's first big jet may one day challenge Boeing and Airbus https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-09-24/china-may-seize-a-bit-of-the-skies-for-itself The plane is cheap, though -- reportedly 10 percent less expensive than the competition -- and designed to be good enough not just for China but other emerging markets where air travel is booming and regulations are less strict than in the developed world. The hope is that cost-conscious carriers in Africa and Asia will embrace a plane that they can afford and that does most of what they need, even if its technology isn't cutting-edge. Chinese manufacturers have a track record of winning market share with similar products, matched to the limited means and needs of developing-world consumers. The most important components in the C919, including the engines and most electronics, are made by non- Chinese companies with decades of aerospace experience for the COMAC C919 airliner, a government ministry says on 29 December. The demonstrator will be used to help validate the engine’s advanced technologies, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) says in a news release. According to the International Air Transport Association, global air passenger growth will nearly double over the next 20 years, with the bulk coming from Asia-Pacific. China and India alone will put more than 1.1 billion new fliers into the skies. And according to Boeing, flying them around will require more than 10,000 new planes. For China, that's the ticket to breaking into the global aerospace industry.

The Seattle Times - Oct 27, 2017 China, U.S. agree to honor each other’s aircraft-safety approvals https://www.seattletimes.com/business/boeing-aerospace/china-u-s-agree-to-honor-each-others-aircraft- safety-approvals/ The U.S. and China agreed to recognize each other’s aircraft-safety approvals, which may boost the Asian nation’s burgeoning aviation industry and make it easier for companies like Boeing to sell products there. “This is diplomatically important,” Aboulafia said. “It shows that the U.S. takes China’s aviation industry seriously and that it regards their civil-aviation officials as reliable partners.” In July, the company won approval to start mass production of a separate, 90-seat , the ARJ21.

Leeham News and Comment - Jan 3, 2018 United Aircraft’s and COMAC’s eventful year http://leehamnews.com/2018/01/03/united-aircraft-comac-goes-flying/ New widebody UAC and COMAC have decided to jointly develop a 290 passenger widebody aircraft, competing with Airbus A330/A350 and Boeing’s 787. A separate company has been established for the project, China- Russia Commercial Aircraft International Corporation (CRAIC). CRAIC, which is based in Shanghai, was formed on 22 May 2017. Development will predominately be done in Russia and assembly in China. Entry into service is projected for 2027. The aircraft, called CR929, has its closest Western equivalent in the Boeing 787 project, with the base variant modeled closely after the 787-9.
