It was a perfect day to go out to the glider school and knock some rust off and beat those Chicago winter blues. With the forecast for temperatures in the low 40’s and no snow on the grass runway, a group of us made arrangements to meet Saturday morning for some winter flying. Nobody expected thermals, and we were not disappointed flying only sled rides in our trusty Blanik L-13. We all pitched in to ready the glider for flight, doing the pre-flight inspection and securing the rear seat belts as everyone was going solo to get current. Today our Green Citrabria would be doing the towing duties. It was pre-heated, started and test flown, all systems go. My turn finally arrived and I eagerly climbed into the front seat, buckled up , ran the flow, and conducted the checklist. The lack of an electrical system meant no radio or audio vario, just basic analog gauges for Airspeed, Altitude, and Vario - Check. Belts on and adjusted, rear seat belts fastened to avoid any fouling of the controls - Check. No ballast installed and none required – Check. Flaps and Dive brakes closed and handles in the lock detent, stick and rudder pedals free travel in all directions, trim set for take-off – Check. Towplane in position, no knots in the rope, proper towring attached and verified – Check. Canopy close and locked, vents open to keep it from fogging over – Check. -

01/21 UAS – Low Hanging Fruit India Still to Pluck Air Marshal Anil Chopra PVSM AVSM VM VSM (Retd) Director General, CAPS 22 April 2021 Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) began making unmanned aerial system (UAS) with the Fluffy target drone in 1970s, which was replaced by the reusable, subsonic, pilotless target aircraft Lakshya that first flew in 1985. Around 30 were produced and operated by all the services. The advanced version Lakshya-II was flight-tested in January 2012. In March 2017, Air Force version of Lakshya-II was flight tested. The Army-centric Nishant is a multi-mission UAS with day/night capability for battlefield surveillance and targeting, and was first flown in August 1996. DRDO claimed it equivalent of IAI’s Searcher. Finally only four were built. A wheeled version of the Nishant UAS, named “Panchi” is known to be under development. There are a large number of DRDO UAS projects since 1985, but what really counts is, what gets inducted into the Armed Forces. That number after nearly 45 years should have been much higher. DRDO’s Rustom Series Rustom-1 was evolved from Burt Rutan’s Long-EZ with 250 km range, for visual and radar surveillance. It was to be a tactical UAV with endurance of 12 hours, and made its first flight in November 2009. Rustom-H, is a larger UAV was with flight endurance of over 24 hours. TAPAS-BH- 201 (Rustom-2) Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV has been derived from the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) LCRA (Light Canard Research Aircraft), and is meant to supplement the Heron UAVs in service. -

Additions and corrections are welcome at [email protected] AVIC AG600 "Kunlong" The AG600 (Jiaolong 600) is a large amphibian powered by four Zhuzhou WJ6 turboprop engines. Development started in 2009 and construction of the prototype in 2014. The first flight took place on 24 December 2017. The aircraft can be used for fire-fighting (it can collect 12 tonnes of water in 20 seconds) and SAR, but also for transport (carrying 50 passengers over up to 5,000 km). The latter capability could give the type strategic value in the South China Sea, which has been subject to various territorial disputes. According to Chinese sources, there were already 17 orders for the type by early 2015.
