A GLOBEFISH monthly update Issue 8/2016 August 2016

Index for prices LATEST TRENDS

August is a key consumption period for in , Groundfish 8 particularly in the Southern part of the continent. This year, fear of terrorist attacks has seen more Italians and Spaniards Flatfish 10 spending their holidays in their own countries, leading to higher restaurant consumption of traditional seafood items, especially Tuna 11 . Small Pelagics 12

Cephalopods 12 GROUNDFISH 14 Polish cod and flatfish prices have been going up, as supply is very tight at the moment. The hake market in has Bivalves 17 continued along the same lines as in previous months, with hake Salmon 17 blocks in strong demand and prices trending upwards quite strongly. Trout 18

For wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus Freshwater fish 18 macrocephalus), demand on the market is strengthening. Prices Non-Traditional are rising also due to the fact that Japanese and Chinese buyers 19 are increasingly looking for Gadus macrocephalus as raw material for their own processing industry. COD - in Poland (FOB, origin: Baltic Sea)

USD/kg The European Fish Price Report, 2.4 based on information supplied by 2.2 industry correspondents, aims to 1.9 provide guidance on broad price trends. 1.7 Price information is indicative and 1.4 should be used only for forecasting 1.2 1.59 medium- and long-term trends. FAO is 0.9 not responsible for any errors or omissions.

Fresh gutted For wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus TURBOT - in Spain, origin: Spain morhua) from fresh raw material of EUR/kg Faroese origin, the situation is stable, 25.0 with poor catches of cod continuing. 23.0 23.20 21.0 Producer stocks in both the Faroe 19.0 18.35 17.0 Islands and Iceland are low. 15.0 13.0 15.25 11.0 9.0 Strong demand in local restaurants 7.0 10.00 from Spanish consumers has resulted in 5.0 fierce price increases for turbot,

especially for large-sized specimens. Fresh - whole, cultured 0.5- 1kg/pc 1-2 kg/pc Prices for the 3-4 kg category reached 2-3 kg/pc 3-4 kg/pc a record level of EUR 23.20 per kg, but all other sizes also saw price increases, with the small turbot (0.5-1 kg) category reaching an all-time high of EUR 10.00 per kg. However, it is likely that prices will fall back to more normal levels in the closing months of the year.

TUNA - BILLFISHES

TUNA - Pacific Ocean August is the period when European USD/kg canners typically close down for the 3.0 before holiday season. As a result, 2.5 demand for raw material is low, and 2.0 1.55 prices have generally been stable or have 1.5 declined somewhat. Demand for canned 1.0 1.40 0.5 tuna is reported to be weaker than in recent years, with bad weather in the Skipjack Bangkok CFR Skipjack Ecuador, ex-vessel Northern part of the continent playing an important role.

Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific TUNA - Indian/Atlantic Oceans continues at a moderate level as the fish EUR/kg aggregating device (FAD) closure enters 3.0 2.30 its second month. There is little change in 2.5 the situations of the Thai canneries as 2.0 2.10 1.5 they continue to report healthy raw 1.25 1.0 material inventories and slow production 0.5 1.18 activities, and as a result skipjack prices have remained stable. Skipjack, Seychelles, FOB Yellowfin, Seychelles, FOB Skipjack, Abidjan, ex-vessel Yellowfin, Abidjan, > 10 kg, ex-vessel

2 Catches in the Eastern Pacific are low and local canneries are reporting slim raw material inventories. The situation has been worsened by the two-month Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission veda (fishing closure), which began on 29 July 2016. 36% of the fleet opted for this closure period as the fleet TUNA - Spanish canneries owner can decide during which period their vessels remain in the harbour. The EUR/kg 2.55 price for Ecuadorian skipjack, eligible for 3.0 EU zero tariff, is slightly up compared 2.5 with last month while the yellowfin price 2.0 1.5 is unchanged. 1.0 1.30 There is no change in the situation in the 0.5 Indian Ocean. Fishing continues at a moderate level and local canneries continue to report healthy raw material Yellowfin, > 10 kg, Spain CFR Skipjack, main sizes, Spain CFR inventories. Both skipjack and yellowfin prices have decreased.

Fishing in the is moderate to good and raw material inventories at local canneries are healthy. As a result of the improvement in fishing, together with the reduced demand from Europe due to holiday closure, skipjack and yellowfin prices have dropped.

European prices for skipjack and yellowfin continue to fall, as inventories of raw material are full and canneries are closed for the holiday season.

SMALL PELAGICS

Herring catches by the Polish fleet are currently very limited. Although demand is not very strong, prices have shown some upward tendencies.

CEPHALOPODS

Squid supplies are low at the moment as the Southwest Atlantic squid season was very disappointing. Prices are moving up in all major markets, especially in the Southern part of the continent, where squid is an important item for the restaurant trade. Demand has also been strong for octopus and cuttlefish, leading to higher prices for these species.

3 Catches remain poor in South , and SQUID - in Italy, origin: South Africa some boats have stayed in port as the EUR/kg winter weather has discouraged 8.0 operations. With inventories low, there 7.0 has been a firming of prices, by around 6.0 5.0 6.70 EUR 200/tonne. There is now a growing 4.0 realization in the industry that it is 3.0 important to ensure that South African products remaining competitive, Squid - Whole, FAS, size M particularly with the South African currency strengthening against the euro. There is hope among South African producers that once the winter storms are over, squid will move back into the main fishing grounds.

CRUSTACEANS

Indonesian production of cultured WHITELEG SHRIMP - origin: Ecuador shrimp has been slow due to poor weather and extreme temperature USD/kg variations during the transition period 11.0 9.5 from rainy to dry season. In fact, the dry 8.0 6.95 season did not start as anticipated in 6.5 April and as a result farmers did not fill 5.0 3.5 ponds as normal, leading to reduced production. This situation will last at least for another month, with the sector 40-50 pc/kg hoping that the temperatures will return to normal levels. Raw material in the 26/30 and 41/50 category has been in very short supply, and prices are trending upwards for these sizes.

During 2016, Ecuador has directed 50 percent of its shrimp exports to Asian markets, to compensate for the low production in Asian countries caused by diseases. The European market is divided into two segments, the Northern part which purchases from Southeast Asia, and the Southern part which buys primarily from Latin America. Because Ecuador is heavily dependent on the Chinese market to absorb volumes, any future reduction in buying interest from China, especially for whole shrimp, will result in lower offer prices for Ecuador’s European buyers.

4 Crab and lobster prices have been EUROPEAN LOBSTER - in Europe, origin: Ireland relatively firm due to strong demand and EUR/kg optimum quality. Canadian spring 35.0 lobster production was far less than 30.0 normal, adding to the upward trend in 25.0 lobster prices in the European market. In 20.0 15.0 fact, European lobster prices rose by 13 18.00 10.0 percent between July and August. Together with its American cousin, this species is a well appreciated seafood 400-600/600-800 gr/pc item in high-end restaurants.

BIVALVES

The French bouchot mussel season is in full production with this species being promoted in many retail stores. In French supermarkets, Dutch and Spanish mussels are also available as a lower price option.

SALMON

After a year-long period in which Norwegian farmed salmon prices have hit consistently higher and higher peaks, the trend has finally reversed. From mid-July to early August, the NASDAQ salmon index shows prices for fresh whole Atlantics out of following a steep downward trend, wiping off some six months of gains and falling back to NOK 61.1 per kg by week thirty-one. A price drop towards the end of the summer is typical in the SALMON - in France, origin: Norway (3-6 kg/pc) European salmon market, as harvest EUR/kg volumes ramp up, but after the price 8.0 7.0 extremes reached this year, the fall is 6.0 expected to be steeper and last longer 5.0 6.14 4.0 than normal. Average prices in July were 3.0 still high, however, and Norway exported 2.0 25 percent more salmon in value terms compared with the same month in 2015, at NOK 4.8 billion. The total for the first seven months of 2016 came to NOK 33 billion, 27% more than the same period in 2015. The EU is Norway’s core market, with France and Poland the most important destinations.

5 In the UK, prices fell back in line with their Norwegian counterparts, but remain high. For processors, whose international purchasing power has been drastically reduced in the wake of Brexit and the subsequent weakening of the British pound, raw material costs are creating major difficulties.

The current price dip is expected to continue into October, with NOK Fish Pool forward prices for that month now down to the mid-50s, but seasonal demand will push them up once again as the end of the year approaches. Despite the relative surplus of fish on the market right now as summer growth at farms forces harvesting, biomasses in the pens remain still low and global supply is very tight.

TROUT

Norwegian farmed trout prices are way up this year and in addition, exporters have been able to move much higher volumes than last year. As a result, export revenues doubled in the first half of the year, to NOK 2.3 billion. Strong demand in Belarus, Japan, Poland and the USA is driving this trend and with biomasses low at Norwegian trout farms, it should continue after the expected post-summer drop.

In Italy, production of trout has been TROUT - Ex-farm prices in Italy negatively impacted by low water supply EUR/kg in the rivers, which is even worse during 4.5 the present summer months. As a result 4.0 3.30 production is slow, but this has been 3.5 3.0 3.20 offset by weak demand. Overall, the 2.5 market is stable with prices coming 2.0 1.5 down from the all-time high reached in April earlier this year. Trout: Salmo spp Rainbow Trout: Oncorhynchus mykiss

FRESHWATER FISH

As is normal for this period of the year, the Hungarian carp market is slow as this species is not considered a summer consumption item. As a result, production is limited and practically no sales have been reported.

6 Pangasius - in Spain, origin: Viet Nam

Demand for pangasius, meanwhile, is USD/kg 3.5 relatively strong at the moment, due to 3.3 3.0 2.50 productive sales of this species in budget 2.8 2.5 restaurants all along the coastline of 2.3 2.0 2.45 Spain and Italy. Nevertheless, overall 1.8 imports of pangasius into Europe 1.5 declined during the first half of 2016

when compared with the same period in Fillets - interleaved, 20% glaze, skinless, boneless, belly-off 2015. Fillets - IQF, white, 20%, 1 kg poly bag

SEABASS - SEABREAM - MEAGRE

European bass and gilthead seabream price trends have been uncharacteristically flat this summer, as seasonal demand was offset by relatively higher supply volumes. Average prices are still at reasonably good levels for both species however, hovering around EUR 5 per kg for medium sizes on the Italian market. Greek exports of bream are marginally down in terms of price and volume so far this year, but the opposite is true for bass exports. For Turkey, the other major European producer, Farmed Finfish: Price Trend export volumes of both species are up

as domestic demand has been EUR/kg dampened by a reduced number of 7.5 6.14 6.5 tourists following terrorist attacks in the 5.5 5.10 country. Prices are marginally down for 4.5 4.90 Turkish exporters in euro terms, but a 3.5 steady weakening of the Turkish lira 2.5 has more than offset this decline. The

Spanish farmed bass and bream sector Seabass Seabream meanwhile, has ramped up production, Salmon targeting the French and Italian markets in addition to Portugal, the major destination of Spanish product. The near-term outlook is for a price decline as the summer draws to a close, with Greek companies in particular hoping that underlying demand remains firm enough to keep prices at sustainable levels.
