BENEFACTOR

For more than 75 years, Fedcap has advanced the development of people, businesses and communities. We help individuals and targeted populations break through barriers to achieve long-term, living-wage em- ployment, and we create jobs with a future. Fedcap’s workforce develop- ment efforts include education, training, career counseling, job placement, and post-employment and other services. Our economic development business model supports more than 1,500 jobs in four core businesses – Facilities Management, Office Services, Manufacturing and Home Care – with operations in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC. In today’s challenging economy and fiercely competitive job market, it is more important than ever to be forward-thinking and innovative. Recog- nized for taking bold and strategic steps to advance our mission and lead the not-for-profit sector, this year Fedcap combined with two agencies whose long and successful histories bring exceptional experience, talent and energy to our joint future. Fedcap and Wildcat Service Corporation, a NYC workforce-development pioneer founded in 1972, are a perfect fit that offers consumers a wider range of job opportunities. Fedcap and The Way to Work (founded in 1936) complement each other’s extensive work with youth and young adults. Together we will expand our reach and achieve the best possible outcomes for even more consumers. The social service safety net has never been so vulnerable. People living on the fringes are in greater danger than ever. We are better working together to address the hardships caused by joblessness, especially among people who have trouble getting jobs even in the best of times. In recent years, Fedcap – founded by veterans – has re-tooled programs and services to meet the specific needs of returning Post-9/11 service members. We also focus increasingly on the employment barriers facing young people who have grown up in foster care, and adults who have spent time in prison. As we work on the frontlines to directly help individuals and communities advance toward economic independence, we also continue to push the boundaries of knowledge and dialogue. Our Community Impact Insti- tute researches and addresses the specific challenges that keep people and communities in poverty. Our newly launched Solution Series gathers employers, nonprofits and other thought-leaders to open dialogues and debates and to plot out new courses of action. We know that such part- nerships are the only sure routes to real, lasting change. The past, present and future successes of Fedcap, Wildcat and The Way to Work are made possible by the kind generosity of our donors. We thank all of you, from the bottom of our hearts.

in combination with BENEFACTOR

Congratulations to Fedcap, Wildcat and The Way to Work on a Successful Combination. Together we are stronger!

Sincere appreciation to Mark Wagar, Wes Moore, Brian Lehrer and ACR Electronics for your honors tonight.

Wes Moore Army Combat Veteran, Author, Veterans’ and Youth Advocate Community Leadership Award

Wes Moore is an Army combat veteran, businessman and author who has dedicated his time and talents to public service. “Public service does not have to be an occupa tion,” Wes says, “but it must be a way of life.” Wes gradu ated Phi Theta Kappa as a commis sioned officer from Valley Forge Military College and from Johns Hopkins Univer sity in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in International Relations. He completed a MLitt in International Relations from Oxford Univer sity as a Rhodes Scholar in 2004. Wes was a paratrooper and Cap tain in the Army, serving a combat tour of duty in Afghanistan with the elite 1st Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division in 2005-2006. Wes spearheaded the American strategic support plan for the Afghan Reconciliation Program that unites former insurgents with the new Afghan Government. Wes became an investment profes sional in New York at Citigroup, focusing on global technol ogy and alternative investments. He was named one of Ebony magazine’s “Top 30 Leaders under 30” for 2007 and Crain’s New York Business ’ “40 Under 40 Rising Stars” in 2009. Wes is passionate about supporting U.S. veterans and examining the roles education, mentoring and public service play in the lives of American youth. He serves on the board of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veter ans of America (IAVA). He is a regular contributor to MSNBC’s “” and has been featured by such media outlets as People Magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, CSPAN, amongst others. Wes’ best-selling first book, The Other Wes Moore, was published in the spring of 2010. On December 11, 2000, The Baltimore Sun ran an article about how Wes, despite his troubled childhood, had just received The Rhodes Scholar ship. At the same time, The Sun was running stories about four African-American men who were arrested for the murder of an off-duty Baltimore police officer during an armed robbery. One of the men convicted was just two years older than Wes, lived in the same neighbor hood, and in an uncanny turn, was also named Wes Moore. Wes wondered how two young men from the same city, who were around the same age, and even shared a name, could arrive at two completely different destinies. Wes realized that in their two stories was a much larger tale about the conse quences of personal responsi bil ity and the imperativeness of education and community for a generation of boys searching for their way.
