Ko Hong Air view Ko Hong offers secluded anchorage, a useful stop over the way to or from Krabi and, one which is acceptable overnight in the Northeast monsoon season or in very calm weather. To the North of the sandy spit is an enticing bay which is particularly good for snorkelling and diving. Ko Hong is so named because of its large internal lagoon, accessible only by dinghy across s shallow reef on tides above one metre. This Hong about 200 metres across, is one of the biggest in the area and the sheer cliffs on all sides makes a picturesque backdrop for photography. You can swim in the Hong at high tide. Ko Hong with the beach and lagoon GLL 2008/11/01 Page 7/23 Trip from Yacht Haven in Thailand to Langkawi in Malaysia with LIBRAN SONG After Ko Hong visit sail to Ao Nang, part of Krabi beach with diner ashore. The way from Ko Yai Noi to Ao Nang Krabi Two possibilities for a Quiet Night: 1. Mooring at Ao Nang beach Ao Nang beach is located near the most important place. Shops, bars and restaurants are found on the front beach. This is the best place for some shopping and night lives. Ao Nang is important because of its access to the main road to Krabi, thought it is the beauty of the beaches on the peninsula immediately south that have made Krabi world famous. Comfortable and secure anchorage in wide shallow bay can be found in about 5 metres mooring well offshore. 2. Mooring at “Railay Beach” It is better to take one of the several moorings laid in the centre of the bay. This bay has spectacular stacks rocks which form headlands to the North and the South. Restaurants and bungalows in the shade of coconut palms which fringe the beach tend to be frequented by budget travellers. Extending out into the bay at the Southern end of the beach is a reef, easily seen in the clear waters, and magnet for snorkelling. Also walking along the headland at low tide there are several caves, fissures and spectacular overhangs to explore. Railay Beach GLL 2008/11/01 Page 8/23 Trip from Yacht Haven in Thailand to Langkawi in Malaysia with LIBRAN SONG Day 05 (About 4 to 5 hours navigation) Krabi – Ko Dam Khwan – Ko Mai Phai (Chicken and Bamboo Island) Ko Phi Phi 22 miles Railay Beach Air view Two possibilities to visit Krabi: 1. • Southern Andaman Coast
© Lonely Planet Publications SOUTHERN ANDAMAN COAST 325 Southern Andaman Coast Island hoppers, this is your dreamland. The south is the quieter half of the Andaman coast; even the tourist star of Ko Phi-Phi can’t rival the glam and crowds of Phuket. Instead, this region is the ideal choice for serious relaxation, outdoor fun and chummy nights at beachside bars. Just slowly putter from white-sand isle to white-sand isle. Social seekers will love the developed beauties such as Ko Phi-Phi and Ko Lanta where you can party into the wee hours and meet plenty of people on the beach, yet still find a peaceful strip of sand. And roads less travelled are just next door: head down through the lightly developed Trang islands to the even less visited Satun Province to find powder-white romantic beaches, outrageous snorkelling and plenty of spicy southern Thai culture. The entire region is made up of a spectacular undulating coastline pierced by sheer limestone formations, speckled with islands and cloaked in a carpet of verdant greenery. Besides the phenomenal diving and snorkelling, some of the best rock climbing in the world can be found in Krabi and Trang Provinces. All that limestone also means there are plenty of caves to explore; some house shrines while others require that you shimmy on your stomach to get through. You can also kayak to islands or through coastal mangroves. Much of this region shuts down in the April to November low season but even at that time you can still get to most places with determined effort.
