While some texts from Chekhov’s early period will be included, the focus will be on works from the later 1880s, 1890s and early 1900s. Attention will be given to the social and historical circumstances which form the background to Chekhov’s writings, as well as to major influences on Chekhov’s writing, notably Tolstoy. Tolstoy and Zola: Trains and Missed Connections Nina Lee Bond Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Nina Lee Bond All rights reserved ABSTRACT Tolstoy and Zola: Trains and Missed Connections Nina Lee Bond ŖTolstoy and Zolaŗ juxtaposes the two writers to examine the evolution of the novel during the late nineteenth century. The juxtaposition is justified by the literary critical debates that were taking place in Russian and French journals during the 1870s and 1880s, concerning Tolstoy and Zola. In both France and Russia, heated arguments arose over the future of realism, and opposing factions held up either Tolstoyřs brand of realism or Zolařs naturalism as more promising. This dissertation uses the differences between Tolstoy and Zola to make more prominent a commonality in their respective novels Anna Karenina (1877) and La Bête humaine (1890): the railways. But rather than interpret the railways in these two novels as a symbol of modernity or as an engine for narrative, I concentrate on one particular aspect of the railway experience, known as motion parallax, which is a depth cue that enables a person to detect depth while in motion. Stationary objects close to a travelling train appear to be moving faster than objects in the distance, such as a mountain range, and moreover they appear to be moving backward. By examining motion parallax in both novels, as well as in some of Tolstoyřs other works, The Kreutzer Sonata (1889) and The Death of Ivan Il'ich (1886), this dissertation attempts to address an intriguing question: what, if any, is the relationship between the advent of trains and the evolution of the novel during the late nineteenth century? Motion parallax triggers in a traveler the sensation of going backward even though one is travelling forward. -

In 1894, the year Chekhov wrote The Seagull, dachas were more commonly owned by the “new rich” than ever before. The characters in The Seagull more likely represent the class of the intelligencia: artists, authors, and actors. FUN FACTS Dachas have strong connections with nature, bringing farming and gardening to city folk. A higher class Russian vacation home or estate was called a Usad’ba. ARCHITECTURE Neoclassicism represented intelligence An example of 19th century and culture, so aristocrats of this time neoclassical architecture attempted to reflect this in their architecture. Features of neoclassical architecture include geometric forms, simplicity in structure, grand scales, dramatic use of Greek columns, Roman details, and French windows. Sorin’s estate includes French windows, and likely other elements of neoclassical style. During the last part of his life, his towering personality dominated the intellectual climate of Russia and the world to an unprecedented degree. His work, moreover, continues to be studied and admired. His views on art, literature, morals, politics, and life have never ceased to influence writers and thinkers all over the world. Such interest over the years has produced an immense quantity of books and articles about Tolstoy, his ideas, and his work. In Russia alone their number exceeded ten thousand some time ago (more than 5,500 items were published in the Soviet Union between 1917 and 1957) and con tinues to rise. -

CONTINENTAL THOUGHT & THEORY: A JOURNAL OF INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM Thinking Sin: Contemporary Acts and Sensibilities Volume 3 | Issue 2: Thinking Sin 123-142 | ISSN: 2463-333X Dialectics of Sin: snokhachestvo Incest in Maxim Gorky’s Fiction Henrietta Mondry Russian literature famously contributed to thinking about sin in the works of its most celebrated writers, such as Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy, dubbed as “Russian thinkers” to denote their contribution to moral, philosophical, and psychological thought.1 Dostoevsky explored the problem of sin and crime in Crime and Punishment, and in his last most philosophical novel, The Brothers Karamazov (1880), he even posited the problem of the hereditary nature of sin with its focus on the family. Leo Tolstoy also explored the relations between sin, crime and evil within the family, notably in his play The Power of Darkness (1886) that controversially depicted the Russian peasant family as home to criminal and sinful acts of incest and murder. So powerful was Tolstoy’s indictment that the play was forbidden to be staged till 1902. My present investigation focuses of the work of another celebrated classic of Russian literature, Maxim Gorky (1868-1936), whose contribution to thinking about sin/crime in relation to the workings of the Russian family has not been fully explored. In particular, his stories reveal a preoccupation with the theme of father and daughter-in-law incest, in direct relation to the notion of sin in Judeo-Christian tradition. Writing on the topic of sin and evil in European literature, Ronald Paulson has noted that topics of sin in literature often relate to transgressions of sexual prohibitions set out in Leviticus in the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible).2 Paulson uses the writings of the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur who maintains in his The Symbolism of Evil, that “sin does not so much signify a harmful substance” but rather a violated personal relation to God, a violation of a religious bond, of a contract with the deity himself (p. -

Women and Work in the Middle Ages Pat Knapp / Monika von Zell Modern historians are beginning to discover that medieval women made a significant contribution to the economy of the medieval world. In past histories, women were either ignored by men or taken for granted. Neither religious nor romantic literature gives us an accurate accounting of the activities of the real medieval woman. Today, letters, wills, business and legal documents, convent, manor and census records and manuscript illuminations are used to complete our concept of the world of medieval women. It is hoped that this study will assist the female members of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. with their persona research and their attempts to become real medieval women. For women in the Middle Ages played an active role in medieval society, although their economic efforts were affected by their social class, marital status and by the place and time in which they lived. Within the three estates are five groups of women which shall be examined: First—Women from the class that was landed and free; the husband possessed some land and was relatively free of the control of the manorial lord. here we find the yeoman's wife, the knight's wife, the lady of the manor. Second—Religious women. Women from the upper classes, and women of the noble and knightly families, as well as those from well-to-do merchant families, were the principal sources of vocations. Third—Women whose families provided the free burgesses; the citizens of the towns. Chaucer's Wife of Bath was a free townswoman.
