Hejazi, one of the most popular and enlightened novelists of the 20'^ century Iran, in the light of the social conditions that prevailed in his country during the first halfofthe 20'*'century. The study is focussed on how these social conditions have been understood, interpreted, elaborated and commented upon by Mohd. Hejazi through his stories, plots, characters and different events occurring in the lives of his protagonists. This study is also aimed at understanding and assessing this most renowned Iranian novelist of the 20 century, in the background of the socio-political scenario and the cultural ambience that prevailed in Iran during his times. It can be safely said that literature and poetry while being products of their times, also leave their impact on these conditions. It is a mutual give and take between the society and the writer, and in order to understand his writings, one must also try to understand the society in which these have been produced. This is the reason that the present work not only deals with the novels but also focuses and makes an attempt to understand and describe the social pattern of his times and how it affected Modem Persian Prose. To serve as a back drop to Hejazi's novels, a brief study of the genres of Modem Persian Prose have also been attempted. All available important prose works of his period are taken into account and critically evaluated. The thesis consists of four chapters, the fifth chapter being the Conclusion. First chapter deals with the social and political conditions of Iran in the early part of the 20* century. It describes how, during that time, winds of change have taken Iran into their grip and how the Iranian people have responded to them. This chapter attempts to provide an outline of these conditions and how they were responsible for the changes that took place in the prose and poetry of Iran. Second chapter describes how Modem Persian Prose came into existence in Iran. It defines and analyses the changes that took place in the style, language and thoughts, preparing the field for the introduction of new prose and poetry. It also gives a brief account of the new literary genres in prose, highlighting their chief characteristics. It also lays stress on a new kind of social awareness obtainable in the novels and short stories of this period. The third chapter deals at length with the development of novel writing in Iran with special reference to those novelists and their works that were Hejazi's contemporaries. Fourth chapter is focussed on Mohd. Hejazi, his life and works, and is an attempt to critically evaluate Hejazi's novels as a reflection of the social conditions of Iran during the first half of the 20^*^ century. Following novels, their plots, characters and their social contents have been discussed in detail: 1. Zeba 2. Huma 3. Sarashk 4. Parichehr 5. Parwane The fifth and the last chapter is the Conclusion. It tries to sum up Hejazi's role as a social writer in the light of his novels.     Annual Report 2016-2017 1. MISSION STATEMENT National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) started its academic and administrative operations during IX Plan w.e.f. 01.04.1996. NCPUL was declared a national Nodal Agency for promotion of Urdu in the country and recognized as an important autonomous organization of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India devoted to promotion of Urdu language and mainstreaming of Urdu education. NCPUL has been given the role of networking of Urdu organizations throughout the country so as the policies of the Government could be implemented in all Urdu speaking areas of the country. For past few years NCPUL has emerged as an effective coordination mechanism for promotion of Urdu language and Urdu medium education in India. During the course of discharging its responsibilities, NCPUL has been assigned the additional responsibility of promotion of Arabic & Persian languages which have played an important role in the development of composite culture of India. The broad goals of the Council are as under:- 1) To promote, develop and propagate Urdu language. 2) To take action for making available in Urdu language, the knowledge of scientific and technological development as well as knowledge of ideas evolved in the modern context. 3) To advise the Government of India on issues connected with Urdu language and having bearing on education as may be referred to it. 4) To undertake any other activity for the promotion of Urdu language as may be deemed fit by the Council. 1 2. The object of the present research work, being submitted for the award of Ph.D. is to assess and analyse the contribution of these two great Mughal kings to Persian literature. The thesis consists of an introduction and five chapters: The first chapter deals with the political and cultural conditions of Babur's time. It was deemed necessary to present a brief critical background of that particular period so as to familiaries the reader with the chief intellectual and cultural trends prevalant during Bubur's reign. The second chapter describes in detail, Babur's role as a great patron of literature and gives information about his Turkish/Persian poetry and the Tuzuk-i-Babari, an Important source of history.

AZARMI DUKHT SAFAVI (Professor) DEPARTMENT OF PERSIAN ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2001 ABSTRACT With the foundation of the Mughal rule in India, Persian language and literature achieved a special position at the Mughal court which it did not enjoy even in Iran. It was the special favour and patronage of Mughal rulers especially Akbar and Jahangir which attracted a large number of scholars and poets towards India. Hence the literary forms and fashions initiated in the Indian style as Sabk-i-Hindi. Urfi, Naziri, Zahuri, Talib Amuli, Abu Talib Kalim, Saib Tabrizi etc. made enough contribution to develop it and this style reached its climax in Mughal India. Shapur Tehrani was also amongst the pioneers of this style. His Diwan consists of Ghazals, Qasidas, Rubais, Tarjibands and an incomplete Mathnawi "Shireen Khusro". His poetic style is highly extolled by many Tazkira writers. It is unfortimate that despite the glorious tributes paid by Persian scholars to his poetic genius and his illustrious family, no substantial work has been done to critically evaluate his poetry. The aim of the present research work, being submitted for the award of the degree of Ph.D. is to assess and analyse the contribution of Shapur Tehrani to Persian literature and to determine his position amongst the plethora of Persian poets associated with Iran as well as the Indian sub-continent.

    Indian Journal of History of Science, 50.4 (2015) 575-601 DOI: 10.16943/ijhs/2015/v50i4/48362 Survey of Zījes Written in the Subcontinent S M Razaullah Ansari* (Received 23 June 2015) Abstract The basic religious duties of a Muslim, and their compliance are carried out using astronomical time reckoning, geographical location and also observation of lunar crescent. In fact the observance of these duties compelled the Islamic scientists to incline themselves to the reception of astronomy and mathematics as developed in the neighbouring countries of Arabia. The knowledge thus gained was developed enormously, particularly in the field of observational astronomy. A Zīj (plural Zījāt in Arabic) is actually a compilation of astronomical- mathematical tables for calculating the position of Sun, Moon and planets particularly. It may contain also a catalogue of stars. Besides these some Zījes have also a geographical gazetteer. Zījes are also used for predicting the occurrence of solar and lunar eclipses. Evidently Zījes are aid to observational astronomy and consequently the essential task of an astronomical observatory. Although in early centuries of Islamic Middle Ages, Zījes were written in Arabic –– we mention a couple of them in the introduction –– in the later centuries Persian became the medium of their compilation. In this paper, we present a survey of Zījes compiled in the erstwhile Indian subcontinent. Two Zījes of the Sultanate period are known to-date, Zīj-i Nāirī (13th c.) and Zīj-i Jāmī ‘ Mamūd Shāh Khiljī (15th c.). In the Mughal period, eight Zijes appear to be compiled according to our present knowledge. The most significant Zījes were Zīj-i Shāh Jahānī (AD 1629), Zīj-i Muammad Shāhī (1719), and Zij-i Bahādur Khānī (1838).Tracing their historical origin, we discuss their contents.
