The Govt. of India (now, MHRD) on 29th March 1972 on the recommendation of a Working Group set up by the Govt. of Indian in December 1971 comprising Professor R.S. Sharma, Patna University (Chairman); Professor Satish Chandra, Jawaharlal Nehru University; Professor Tapan Raychaudhuri, Delhi University; Dr. S.N. Prasad, Director National Archives; Shri J. Veeraraghvan, Director (Internal Finance), Ministry of Education and Social Welfare; and Smt. S. Doraiswami, Deputy Education Adviser, Ministry of Education and Social Welfare. The primary objective of the Council is to promote and give direction to historical research and to encourage and foster objective and scientific writing of history. Enhancing the academic standard of the output of ICHR activities has been foremost objective in our agenda. The broad aims of the Council as laid down in the Memorandum of Association (MoA) are to bring historians together and provide a forum exchange of views between them and to give a national direction to an objective and rational presentation and interpretation of history, to sponsor historical research programmes and projects and to assist institutions and organizations engaged in historical research.     Annual Report 2016-2017 1. MISSION STATEMENT National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) started its academic and administrative operations during IX Plan w.e.f. 01.04.1996. NCPUL was declared a national Nodal Agency for promotion of Urdu in the country and recognized as an important autonomous organization of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India devoted to promotion of Urdu language and mainstreaming of Urdu education. NCPUL has been given the role of networking of Urdu organizations throughout the country so as the policies of the Government could be implemented in all Urdu speaking areas of the country. For past few years NCPUL has emerged as an effective coordination mechanism for promotion of Urdu language and Urdu medium education in India. During the course of discharging its responsibilities, NCPUL has been assigned the additional responsibility of promotion of Arabic & Persian languages which have played an important role in the development of composite culture of India. The broad goals of the Council are as under:- 1) To promote, develop and propagate Urdu language. 2) To take action for making available in Urdu language, the knowledge of scientific and technological development as well as knowledge of ideas evolved in the modern context. 3) To advise the Government of India on issues connected with Urdu language and having bearing on education as may be referred to it. 4) To undertake any other activity for the promotion of Urdu language as may be deemed fit by the Council. 1 2. Supervisor : Prof. Azarmi Dukht Safavi Department of Persian Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh. ABSTRACT For nearly eight hundred years, Persian Language and literature has been an integral part of Indian life and culture. With the establishment of Mughal empire by Babur in 1526 A.D., Persian prose and poetry grew in every dimension and made in roads in all branches. Both Babur and Humayun were great patrons of art, pofttry and literature and had contribut­ ed a great deal for the promotion of Persian language and literature in Indian. The object of the present research work, being submitted for the award of Ph.D. is to assess and analyse the contribution of these two great Mughal kings to Persian literature. The thesis consists of an introduction and five chapters: The first chapter deals with the political and cultural conditions of Babur's time. It was deemed necessary to present a brief critical background of that particular period so as to familiaries the reader with the chief intellectual and cultural trends prevalant during Bubur's reign. AZARMI DUKHT SAFAVI (Professor) DEPARTMENT OF PERSIAN ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2001 ABSTRACT With the foundation of the Mughal rule in India, Persian language and literature achieved a special position at the Mughal court which it did not enjoy even in Iran. It was the special favour and patronage of Mughal rulers especially Akbar and Jahangir which attracted a large number of scholars and poets towards India. Hence the literary forms and fashions initiated in the Indian style as Sabk-i-Hindi. Urfi, Naziri, Zahuri, Talib Amuli, Abu Talib Kalim, Saib Tabrizi etc. made enough contribution to develop it and this style reached its climax in Mughal India. Shapur Tehrani was also amongst the pioneers of this style. His Diwan consists of Ghazals, Qasidas, Rubais, Tarjibands and an incomplete Mathnawi "Shireen Khusro". His poetic style is highly extolled by many Tazkira writers. It is unfortimate that despite the glorious tributes paid by Persian scholars to his poetic genius and his illustrious family, no substantial work has been done to critically evaluate his poetry. The aim of the present research work, being submitted for the award of the degree of Ph.D. is to assess and analyse the contribution of Shapur Tehrani to Persian literature and to determine his position amongst the plethora of Persian poets associated with Iran as well as the Indian sub-continent.

    Indian Journal of History of Science, 50.4 (2015) 575-601 DOI: 10.16943/ijhs/2015/v50i4/48362 Survey of Zījes Written in the Subcontinent S M Razaullah Ansari* (Received 23 June 2015) Abstract The basic religious duties of a Muslim, and their compliance are carried out using astronomical time reckoning, geographical location and also observation of lunar crescent. In fact the observance of these duties compelled the Islamic scientists to incline themselves to the reception of astronomy and mathematics as developed in the neighbouring countries of Arabia. The knowledge thus gained was developed enormously, particularly in the field of observational astronomy. A Zīj (plural Zījāt in Arabic) is actually a compilation of astronomical- mathematical tables for calculating the position of Sun, Moon and planets particularly. It may contain also a catalogue of stars. Besides these some Zījes have also a geographical gazetteer. Zījes are also used for predicting the occurrence of solar and lunar eclipses. Evidently Zījes are aid to observational astronomy and consequently the essential task of an astronomical observatory. Although in early centuries of Islamic Middle Ages, Zījes were written in Arabic –– we mention a couple of them in the introduction –– in the later centuries Persian became the medium of their compilation. In this paper, we present a survey of Zījes compiled in the erstwhile Indian subcontinent. Two Zījes of the Sultanate period are known to-date, Zīj-i Nāirī (13th c.) and Zīj-i Jāmī ‘ Mamūd Shāh Khiljī (15th c.). In the Mughal period, eight Zijes appear to be compiled according to our present knowledge. The most significant Zījes were Zīj-i Shāh Jahānī (AD 1629), Zīj-i Muammad Shāhī (1719), and Zij-i Bahādur Khānī (1838).Tracing their historical origin, we discuss their contents.
