In the Hamid Manzil, the passage leading to the Darbar Hall housing the museum, is through a sculpture gallery representing a number of classical feminine Greek figures of the 17th – 18th century, which were imported from Italy more than a century ago. The gigantic life-size statues have been carved out of white falcon marble. The niches in the gallery, cornices and ceilings of the canopy embellished in pure gold, add much to its stately grandeur. of Bijapur and Qutb Shahi Library of Golconda and Hyderabad are found on the manuscripts. The groupwise distribution of collection is enclosed in Appendix II (Page No. ).

COLLECTION OF ARABIC MANUSCRIPTS

There are 5488 Arabic manuscripts in the library. Among the few rarest of the rare is the seventh century A.D. Quran written on parchment in early Kufic script ascribed to the fourth Caliph, Hazrat Ali (died 661 A.D). Another copy of Quran written on paper in the eight century A.D. is attributed to the penmanship of Imam Jafar Sadiq. The ninth century Quran ascribed to Imam Ali Raza written on parchment and tenth century Quran in early Naskh ascribed to the celebrated scholar and calligrapher “Ibn Muqla” who served three caliphs of Baghdad as the Prime Minister and died on July 20, 941 A.D. He had reshaped the Arabic Kufic letters into Naskh which is still in vogue in one or the other form. It is, indeed a unique specimen of writing of Ibn Muqla in the world.

A page from 7th century AD Quran attributed to Hazrat Ali

The collection includes one copy of rare Quran by the celebrated calligrapher of Baghdad, Yaqut al Mustasimi which exclusively bears the ornamentation in gold and precious stone lapis lazuli colours. This is datable to the 13th century A.D. Another highlight of the collection is the Arabic manuscript by the same calligrapher ‘Diwan- al- Hadira’ dated 629 A.H. (1221 A.D.) It once decorated the royal Library of Sultan Ibrahim Adil Shah of Bijapur. It is published by Library and its editing is done by famous scholar of Arabic, Prof. Mokhtaruddin Ahmed (1924-2010 AD).

An interesting work in Arabic of Pseudo geography and wonderful creation profusely illustrated with strange figures of human beings, animals and birds entitled ‘Ajaibul Makhluqat’ was written by Zakaria bin Mahmud al Qazvini d. 682 A.H. (1283 A.D.) 16

and scribed in elegant Naskh by Ibn Kalamuddin Husain in 929 A.H. (1571 A.D.) in two volumes. Library is translating it in urdu and translation of first part is completed.

There is yet another unique Arabic manuscript “Sharh-al-Kafia” written by Razi-ud-Din Astar Abaadi in 1640 AD which bears marginal notes by Emperor Shah Jahan and Prime Minister Nawab Sa’adullah Khan. This manuscript contains seals of Sadullah Khan, Inayat Khan, Itimad Khan, Muhammad Salih Khan, Aurangzeb and also of famous 18th century Arabic-Persian scholar Mir Ghulam Ali Azad Bilgrami.

COLLECTION OF PERSIAN MANUSCRIPTS

The earliest manuscript in Persian is ‘Zakhira-i- Khawarizm Shahi’ on medicine written by Zainuddin Ibrahim Gurgani d. 531 A.H. (1136 A.D) scribed in 514 A.H. (1120 A.D.). Another one is a ‘Tafsir-i-Tabri’ translated from Arabic by Abdul Baqi and scribed by Mirza Muhammad Bin Mujtahid which is datable to the 12th century A.D. It bears autographs of King Shah Abbas of Iran and Qasim Beg Khan dated 1031 A.H. (1621-22 A.D.). Among the earliest illustrated Persian work is on history of Mongol tribes namely “Jami-ut-Tawarikh” by Rasheeduddin Fazlullah which includes rare miniatures depicting various aspects of political, social, and religious life of the Mongols. The paintings indicate inspiration from Chinese and Central Asian early paintings, which seem to have influenced the Herat school of Persia. It is dateable to the 14th century A.D.

Representing the Iranian style of painting, the Library has the Khamsa of Nizami Ganjavi (d. 1203 A.D.) illustrated in 949 A.H. (1542-43 A.D.) It is beautifully painted with floral background.

An illustration from Jamiut Tawarikh

Mention may also be made to the Khamsa of Abdur Rahman Jami scribed in A.H. 977 (1569-70 A.D.) by Muhammad Bin Alauddin. Also Haft Aurang of Jami dated A.H. 1038 (1628 A.D.) was bound with other masnavies scribed by Jamaluddin Katib Shirazi.

The manuscript, Diwan-i-Jami scribed in A.H. 979 (1571 A.D.) bears a beautiful seal of Hamida Bano Begum, daughter of Ali , mother of Emperor Akbar and Nazar Ara daughter of Shah Jahan on the colophon. It is interesting to note that Nazar Ara Begum, 17

daughter of Shah Jahan whose seal appears on colophon does not appear to be mentioned in the contemporary Persian literature.

The famous fable of Indian origin namely ‘Kalila–wa–Dimna’ translated by Abul Maali Nasrullah Bin Muhammad Ghaznavi seems to be illustrated and scribed in the mid sixteenth century A.D. Its miniatures depict landscapes, flora and fauna in notable colour schemes. Emperor Akbar took great interest in paintings particularly in book illustration following the Mongol, Timurid and Rajput traditions. He commissioned several artists both Indian and Persian in his court and also established an office for translation to illustrate various subjects. Besides, illustrating, the books were translated from Sanskrit to Persian for developing better understanding among different communities.

The Rampur Raza Library has more than one hundred and fifty illustrated manuscripts of great literary and artistic value. These illustrations provide deep insight into the contemporary life style, art, architecture, customs, ornaments besides topographical details, flora, fauna and traditional musical instruments, etc.

Among the rare and valuable illustrated manuscripts, there is ‘Diwan–i– Hafiz’ which was scribed during Akbar’s reign, most probably 1575-80 A.D. and illustrated by the celebrated court painters. The manuscript written in elegant Nastaliq script and bears eleven miniatures, representing-

 The Mughal Emperor Akbar listening from Diwan-i-Hafiz at his court, painted by Kanha.  Dervishes dancing in the Khanqah over powered by the ecstasy of devotional music.  A semi naked young man walking in rocky valley, painted by Sanwala.  A Prince sitting in his garden with noblemen and listening to music, painted by Farrukh Chela.  Prince riding with his retinue in a rocky valley, painted by Manohar.  An old man watching a flock of sheep amidst, painted by Farukh Beg.  An interesting scene of Turkish Hammam, people getting massaged and taking bath.  A Prince with noblemen enjoying music and wine at his terrace of the garden, painted by Narsingh.  Depicting sinking of a ship into troubled water.  A Prince sitting in his garden with scholars and musicians listening recitation of verses.  Two opposing forces charging at each other in a battle field, painted by Chitra.

18

An illustration from Diwan-i-Hafiz A page from Risalah Khawaja Abdullah Ansari and Sad Pand-i-Luqman bearing notes & signatures of Jahangir and Shah Jahan

Among the other rare manuscripts, there is a copy of ‘Risalah Khawaja Abdullah Ansari’ and ‘Sad Pand-i-Luqman’ bound together scribed in elegant Nastaliq by the great master calligrapher Mir Ali of Herat who died in 951 A.H. (1544 A.D.) It contains signatures and seals of several Kings and scholars and was graded of the first category by Emperor Shah Jahan and was assessed for Rupees One Thousand. He presented another copy of the same Risalah to Jahan Ara Begum who lavishly praised its importance in her own handwriting with the date 998 A.H. COLLECTION OF TURKISH MANUSCRIPTS

The Turkish language had a notable impact on Indian politics both under the Sultans of Delhi and particularly the early Mughals in as much as that there are several Turkish words now commonly used in Hindi, Urdu and other regional languages. Emperor Babur was a prolific writer and a poet in Turko-Uzbek language and was considered an inventor of a particular style, both in prose and verse.

Its first folio bears the seal and signature of Akbar’s General Muhammad Bairam Khan who 21

wrongly attributed the writing of Diwan-i-Babur to himself. This mistake was rectified by Emperor Shah Jahan in his own hand writing that the only Rubai (Quatrain) in Turkish is in the hands of Firdaus Makani (Babar). Evidently, this unique manuscript is the royal copy dated 935 A.H. (1528 A.D.). The library has published it in original.

Among other rare Turkish manuscripts mention may be made of a unique but incomplete copy of ‘Diwan-i-Bairam Khan’ in Turkish language in Nastaliq script. The floral border with pictures of birds is remarkable for its natural beauty. One of the latest works in Turkish language is the daily diary (Roznamcha) of the classical poet Insha Allah Khan. It contains significant information about the court of Avadh. The catalogue of the Turkish manuscripts is also published by Raza Library. A page of Diwan-i-Babur COLLECTION OF PUSHTO MANUSCRIPTS
