Diversity of K-Pop: a Focus on Race, Language, and Musical Genre
DIVERSITY OF K-POP: A FOCUS ON RACE, LANGUAGE, AND MUSICAL GENRE Wonseok Lee A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2018 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2018 Wonseok Lee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Since the end of the 1990s, Korean popular culture, known as Hallyu, has spread to the world. As the most significant part of Hallyu, Korean popular music, K-pop, captivates global audiences. From a typical K-pop artist, Psy, to a recent sensation of global popular music, BTS, K-pop enthusiasts all around the world prove that K-pop is an ongoing global cultural flow. Despite the fact that the term K-pop explicitly indicates a certain ethnicity and language, as K- pop expanded and became influential to the world, it developed distinct features that did not exist in it before. This thesis examines these distinct features of K-pop focusing on race, language, and musical genre: it reveals how K-pop groups today consist of non-Korean musicians, what makes K-pop groups consisting of all Korean musicians sing in non-Korean languages, what kind of diverse musical genres exists in the K-pop field with two case studies, and what these features mean in terms of the discourse of K-pop today. By looking at the diversity of K-pop, I emphasize that K-pop is not merely a dance- oriented musical genre sung by Koreans in the Korean language. -

YG Entertainment (122870 KQ ) Profit contribution of content production business to be delayed Entertainment 1Q18 review: Earnings disappoint our expectations and the consensus For 1Q18, YG Entertainment reported consolidated revenue of W77.3bn (-27.7% YoY; Results Comment all growth figures hereafter are YoY) and operating profit of W2.3bn (-84.4%), missing May 14, 2018 consensus estimates (W88.1bn and W9.1bn, respectively) and our expectations (W87.3bn and W8.5bn, respectively). There had been bullish expectations on the quarter, due to the anticipated recognition of Big Bang’s last tour prior to the military enlistment of key members. However, the entertainment content production business (which posted a loss of W4bn in 4Q17) weighed on earnings , posting another loss of (Maintain) Trading Buy W3.8bn (versus our original expectation of breakeven). For Japan concerts, the company recognized revenue from Big Bang’ s dome tour (650,000 attendees) and a portion of iKON’s 2H17 tour (100,000 attendees). Concert Target Price (12M, W) ▼ 30,000 attendees fell by 15% (following a record quarter in 1Q17), resulting in a 30% decline in royalties; that said, the decline was broadly within expectations. Album revenue was Share Price (05/11/18, W) 27,350 also lackluster, aside from iKON’s new comeback album released in February (100,000 copies sold). Meanwhile, YG Entertainment appears to be maintaining a tight grip on the music streaming market, supported by new album releases by iKON (Febru ary) Expected Return 10% and WINNER (April) and a new single by Big Bang. Top line should shrink, but profitability should improve OP (18F, Wbn) 21 Revenue will inevitably decline from 2Q18, due to the void left by Big Bang. -
YG Entertainment
YG Entertainment (122870 KQ ) Shifting to a new generation of artists Entertainment 1Q18 preview: In line with consensus For 1Q18, we expect YG Entertainment to post consolidated revenue of W87.1bn Company Report (-18.5% YoY) and operating profit of W8.5bn (-42.9%), in line with the consensus. Japan April 25, 2018 concert revenue likely included Big Bang’s last dome tour (650,000 attendees), held in 2017 prior to the military enlistment of key members, and some of iKON’s 2H17 tour (100,000 attendees). We believe domestic album revenue was lackluster except for iKON’s comeback album (100,000 copies sold). Meanwhile, YG Entertainment is keeping a tight grip on the music streaming market, supported by new album releases (Maintain) Trading Buy by iKON (February) and WINNER (April) and a new single by Big Bang Target Price (12M, W) 32,000 BLACKPINK, WINNER, and iKON on solid growth path YG Entertainment’s lineup is shifting to a new generation of artists to fill the earnings Share Price (04/24/18, W) 29,850 void left by Big Bang’s withdrawal. We believe the case of SM Entertainment (041510 KQ/Buy/TP: W47,000/CP: W36,550) provides clues as to the future of YG Entertainment . Expected Return 7% When TVXQ and Super Junior were on hiatus due to military service, the fan bases for SM Entertainment’s new artists (EXO and SHINee) expanded rapidly, limiting earnings downside over the past two years and becoming a promising revenue source in 2018. OP (18F, Wbn) 24 Consensus OP (18F, Wbn) 27 BLACKPINK’s July Japan arena tour schedule (six performances, 66,000 at tendees) has been confirmed, building on the momentum from a successful showcase (14,000 EPS Growth (18F, %) 11.8 attendees) held in November 2017. -

Hyniea (Niea) Gardner A Thesis in the Field of Anthropology and Archaeology for the Degree of Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies Harvard University May 2019 © May 2019 Hyniea (Niea) Gardner Abstract In 2016 the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) reported that the Korean music industry saw an overseas revenue of ₩5.3 trillion ($4.7 billion) in concert tickets, streaming music, compact discs (CDs), and related services and merchandise such as fan meetings and purchases of music artist apparel and accessories (Kim 2017 and Erudite Risk Business Intelligence 2017). Korean popular music (K-Pop) is a billion-dollar industry. Known for its energetic beats, synchronized choreography, and a sound that can be an amalgamation of electronica, blues, hip-hop, rock, and R&B all mixed together to create something that fans argue is “uniquely K-Pop.” However, further examination reveals that producers and songwriters – both Korean and the American and European specialists contracted by agencies – tend to base the foundation of the K-Pop sound in hip-hop and R&B, which has strong ties to African-American musical traditions. -

Maple Hill Jr. Pawprint Issue 1 November 2018
Maple Hill Jr. Pawprint Issue 1 November 2018 New School ~ New Life Experiences By Bridget Soden, grade 9 - Jr. Pawprint Student Mentor Being a freshman at Maple Hill Jr./Sr. High School is actually quite interesting. They're a lot of different things that are new to me. I came to Maple Hill in 7th grade and a lot has changed since then. I have more responsibility now as well as more opportunities. I went to my first Homecoming this year and it was honestly pretty awesome. The pep rally was really cool and gave me so many ideas for my grade when we become seniors. I really enjoyed spirit week, especially seeing how much effort is put into it. It was much cooler than 7th and 8th grade spirit weeks to be honest but those days were fun, too. Even with fun, there are many things that I have to do as a student. I have more responsibility to make sure I do my school work and to have everything on time. The work is hard but you’ll learn that you can do it and that you are the one who will make or break your future. I learned a lot in this couple months and met many people that will help me and the future freshmen. Especially Mr. Hunter, he has something positive for you every day and you can talk to him about anything. Having the 7th and 8th graders in the school helps them to learn more things about the school. So when they become freshman it’ll be a little bit easier for them to navigate the halls and find their classrooms. -

YG Entertainment (122870 KQ ) Tide Set to Turn
YG Entertainment (122870 KQ ) Tide set to turn Entertainment Raise TP to W43,000 Company Report We raise our target price on YG Entertainment to W43,000 . We acknowledge that the absence of Big Bang creates an unfavorable base for 2018-19 earnings, especially as July 23, 2018 the group was responsible for 84% of Japanese concert attendance over the past five years. However, we are encouraged by the faster-than-expected growth of the company’s new artists. To reflect this, we raised our target price by applying a P/E of 25x to the average of our earnings estimates for 2019 (increase in iKON/BLACKPINK concert attendees) and 2020 (550,000 attendees after Big Bang’s comeback). (Maintain) Trading Buy For months, the company has struggled with a number of headwinds. While top-line contraction looked certain, the timing of artist comebacks was not. Meanwhile, the new Target Price (12M, W) ▲ 43,000 broadcasting/OTT content business has done poorly financially. However, we think t he tide is about to turn. In addition to the growth of BLACKPINK, iKON, and WINNER, we Share Price (07/20/18, W) 37,150 now expect the broadcasting/OTT content business to also contribute to profits from September ( YG Future Strategy Office for Netflix [NFLX US/CP: US$361.05]). Expected Return 16% Expectations on concert demand amid a growing global fan base, a turnaround in subsidiaries, and the resumption of Chinese concerts could also materialize over time. Margins to improve faster than expected OP (18F, Wbn) 10 The fanbase of YG Entertainment’s next-generat ion artists is growing at an impressive Consensus OP (18F, Wbn) 16 pace, as demonstrated by the early advances of the company’s newer artists into Japanese dome concerts.
