Diversity of K-Pop: a Focus on Race, Language, and Musical Genre
DIVERSITY OF K-POP: A FOCUS ON RACE, LANGUAGE, AND MUSICAL GENRE Wonseok Lee A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2018 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2018 Wonseok Lee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Since the end of the 1990s, Korean popular culture, known as Hallyu, has spread to the world. As the most significant part of Hallyu, Korean popular music, K-pop, captivates global audiences. From a typical K-pop artist, Psy, to a recent sensation of global popular music, BTS, K-pop enthusiasts all around the world prove that K-pop is an ongoing global cultural flow. Despite the fact that the term K-pop explicitly indicates a certain ethnicity and language, as K- pop expanded and became influential to the world, it developed distinct features that did not exist in it before. This thesis examines these distinct features of K-pop focusing on race, language, and musical genre: it reveals how K-pop groups today consist of non-Korean musicians, what makes K-pop groups consisting of all Korean musicians sing in non-Korean languages, what kind of diverse musical genres exists in the K-pop field with two case studies, and what these features mean in terms of the discourse of K-pop today. By looking at the diversity of K-pop, I emphasize that K-pop is not merely a dance- oriented musical genre sung by Koreans in the Korean language. -

APPLICATION FOR REOPENING PURSUANT TO S.CT. PRAC.R. XI(6) Now comes Larry James Gapen, by and through counsel, and moves this Court to reopen his direct appeal pursuant to Supreme Court of Ohio Rule of Practice XI(6) ("Rule X1(6)"). Under the familiar two-prong test delineated in Strickland v. Washington, 466 U.S. 668, 687 (1984), Gapen received constitutionally ineffective representation when his appellate counsels' performance fell far below the prevailing professional norms for appellate counsel in capital cases, and Gapen was prejudiced by counsels' failures. Critically, prior appellate counsel failed "to lifigate all issues, whether or not previously presented, that are arguably meritorious under the standards of applicable high quality capital defense representation...[and] to present issues in a manner that will preserve them for subsequent review." Becoming-Black: Exploring Korean Hip-Hop in the Age of Hallyu
Situations 12.1 (2019): 23–46 ISSN: 2288–7822 Becoming-Black: Exploring Korean Hip-hop in the Age of Hallyu Kyung Hyun Kim (University of California, Irvine) Abstract This article examines the emergence of rap and hip-hop in contemporary South Korea. Drawing on Achille Mbembe’s idea of “becoming black,” it proceeds from the view of hip-hop as a worldwide phenomenon made possible by the fact that “blackness” has gained a “new fungibility” in the epoch of global capitalism. The essay explores the ways in which hip- hop performers in South Korea draw on their own experiences of social marginality in the ghetto-like world produced by unrelenting academic and economic competition to create their work. It also considers the ways in which the Korean language obliges rappers to experiment with its syntax and prosody in order to generate the rhymes and repetitions associated with the hip-hop genre. While rap in the South Korean context is often regarded as a successful adaptation of a foreign musical genre, in a manner that recalls the discovery and mastery of Western popular music by Korean musicians in the years following the Korean War, the essay also argues that the reception of hip-hop in the present reestablishes ties to premodern and pre-colonial practices of oral musical storytelling, such as p’ansori, that were neglected and overlooked during the period of modernization. Keywords: blackness, Critique of Black Reason, double consciousness, hip- hop, Korea 24 Kyung Hyun Kim In his recent book, Critique of Black Reason (2017), Achille Mbembe -
