His first solo album, Heartbreaker, and his title track of the same name, released in 2009, were commercially successful, becoming the top-selling album of the Korean soloist at the time and earning him album of the year at the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2009. G-Dragon collaborated with Big Bang Bandmate T.O.P to release the album GD and TOP in 2010. His first EP, One of a Kind (2012), received critical acclaim and three singles: One of a Kind, Crayon and That XX. The EP won the Record of the Year at the 2013 Seoul Music Awards. His 2017 EP, Kwon Ji Yong, brought the number one single Untitled, 2014, and the supporting concert tour Act III: M.O.T.T.E became the largest tour ever conducted by a Korean soloist. Widely recognized for its influence on youth culture, fashion trends and music in Korea, G-Dragon was named by Forbes in 2016 as the most influential man under the age of 30 in entertainment and sports in Asia. The life and career of G-Dragon on MTV Fast Forward, Thailand, 2007 1988-2008: Early Life and Debut with Big Bang Home Article: The Big (South Korean group) Born Born On August 18, 1988, and growing up in Seoul, Kwon Ji Yong began his career at the age of six as part of the band Little Roo'Ra. After the release of the Christmas album, the band's contract was terminated by their record company, which was a shock for G-Dragon. Although he swore to his mother that he wouldn't try to become a singer again, he was divorced from SM Entertainment during a ski trip with his family. He was an intern under the label for five years (from 8-13 years old), specializing in dance before he left. In the third grade, a friend introduced Kwon to the American rap group Wu-Tang Clan. Inspired by their music, he became interested in rap and began attending classes. Under the tutelage of Under People Crew in 2001, he participated in the release of korean hip-hop album Flex, becoming the youngest Korean rapper at the age of 13. Although he wrote his own lyrics, he admitted that his English was weak, and the story behind the lyrics was just another typical I'm young, but I'm the best story. In addition, he and his future Big Bang colleague Choi Seung-hyun were neighbors from high school and often danced and rapped together before Kwon left. After catching Sean's interest in hip-hop duo Jinusean from YG Entertainment, he recommended Kwon to the record label's CEO, Yang Hyun-suk. After signing a contract with the label, Kwon spent the first year cleaning the studio for other artists in the label and extracting water bottles during dance practice. Kwon and another intern, Dong Young-be, originally planned to debut as hip-hop duo GDYB. Kwon chose the stage name G-Dragon (Ji pronounces as G, and Yong - Korean for dragon). He has appeared on other artists' albums and even released several singles with Dong called GDYB. After YG Entertainment abandoned the plan and chose the boy band, Kwon contacted Choi, who was auditioned for. The now-quintet debut was a moderate success, with their first album having sold more than 100,000 copies, and included the first G-Dragon solo recording, a cover album by American alternative rock band Maroon 5 This Love. The release of EP Always in 2007 was a musical departure from their previous material and was the result of G-Dragon's increased participation in its production. Several songs were written by him, including the lead single Lies (Korean: 거짓말; RR: Geojitmal), which became the band's first number one hit. Their following EPs followed in the footsteps of their predecessor: Hot Issue gave a final farewell 인사; RR: Majimak Insa) while stand up spawned Day by Day (Korean: 하루하루; RR: Haru Haru); both singles he composed were on the charts. Produced most of The Big Bang, G-Dragon became involved in the production of Theian's debut extended play Hot (2008), after which he subsequently recorded Part Two for the lead single EP Only Look at Me (Korean: 나만바라봐; R.R.: Naman Barabwa). 2009-2011: Solo Career Development, Heartbreaker, and GD and TOP Heartbreaker (2009) His first official solo single, Heartbreaker drew controversy over the similarities to the song Right Round Flo Reed Problems to Play This File? See the media report. In 2009, G-Dragon was included in singer Lexi's song Super Fly for his album Rush along with Taeyang and T.O.P. He later collaborated with Japanese boy band W-inds. for their single, Fallin' Rain/Hybrid Dream. His first solo album, Heartbreaker, was originally due for release in April of that year, but was pushed back to August to coincide with his 21st (Korean year: 22nd) birthday. Through collaborations with several artists including Teddy from 1TYM, Taeyang, Kush, CL 2NE1 and Sandara Park 2NE1, the album marked a change in G-Dragon's appearance when he dyed his hair blonde to fit his concept. Led by the lead single of the same name, an electronic pop song that sold nearly five million downloads, the album surpassed 300,000 copies sold and won album of the year from the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards. Shortly after the release of Heartbreaker, G-Dragon was accused of plagiarizing Sony Music when his tracks Heartbreaker and Butterfly were similar to Flo Reed's Right Round and She's Electric Oasis, respectively. However, the record label EMI, distributed by Right Round, said that they saw no similarities between the two songs. On March 6, 2010, YG Entertainment announced that they had personally contacted Flo Rida's representatives to participate in G- Dragon's live album, Shine a Light, to which Flo Rida agreed. In support of his album, G-Dragon staged his first solo concert at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in December 2009. The name of the concert, Shine a Light, was derived from the lyrics of his song A Boy. The concert subsequently sparked controversy after complaints of obscenity and suggestive content. The Korean Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs later asked state prosecutors to investigate whether G-Dragon or YG Entertainment violated laws on obscene performances at its concert. On 15 March 2010, he was found not guilty and all charges were brought against him. G-Dragon, performing with T.O.P. in 2011. G-Dragon and T.O.P released their joint album GD and TOP. All three singles preceded the album's release and achieved commercial success: High High scored the first number in several music programs, while Oh yes peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart. The album was released on Christmas Eve and debuted at number one on the Gaon Album Chart with a pre-order of 200,000 copies. G-Dragon also formed a duet with Park Myung for the Infinite Challenge Seohae Ahn Highway Song Festival 2011. They released their song Having an Affair (바람났어) featuring Park Bom from 2NE1 on June 2, 2011. The song later became the second most downloaded song on the Gaon music chart in 2011. Advertising activity ceased after G-Dragon tested positive for marijuana. Although the urine test was negative back in August, a weak positive test for marijuana was detected when testing his hair content in October. Since this was his first recorded drug offence, this led to an indictment and he was not charged. He later claimed he had taken a cigarette offered by a fan in Japan during a party in May, but, realizing it was not an ordinary cigarette, threw it away.
