Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT Unlike communist parties elsewhere in Asia, the Partido Komunista sa Pilipinas (PKP) was constituted almost entirely by acti­ vists from the working class. Radical intellectuals, professionals and other middle class elements were conspicuously absent. More parti­ cularly, the PKP was rooted In the Manila labour movement and, to a lesser extent, in the peasant movement of Central Luzon. This study explores these origins and then examines the character, outlook and performance of the Party in the first three years of its existence (1930-33). Socialist ideas began to circulate during the early 1900s, but were not given durable organisational expression until 1922, when a Workers’ Party was formed. Led by cadres from the country's principal labour federation, the Congreso Obrero, this party aligned its policies increasingly with those of the Comintern.

Laya, then a graduate student in the United States, visited a used-book store in Washington, D.C., where he bought an old manuscript by Arthur Stanley Eggs entitled "The Filipino Drama." ' Despite the manuscript's comprehensive title, Riggs' interest in Philippine drama was limited to the anti-American works presented by Filipino author- patriots of the 1899-1904 period. In his manuscript Riggs discussed earlier Philippine dramatic forms only to use them as reference points for his analy- sis of the "seditious" plays of his era. Believing the manuscript to be of little value, Laya ignored it until he later learned of the true worth of his chance find.

    Macario Sakay Biography General Macario Leon Sakay (1870 – January 9,1907) Ladrone, Tulisan, Bandolero, Brigand, Bandit, Outlaw were all names used to define Philippine criminals in the early 1900s. Since the early American colonization of the Philippines for decades Filipinos allowed themselves to be brainwashed by the American victors in to thinking these men were also enemies to the Filipino people. Through the 1902 Bandolero Act, patriotic armed struggles for independence were deemed by the American colonial government as dishonorable criminal activities. Macario Sakay would be regarded as the greatest outlaw of them all. 100 years later many of these U.S. branded bandits are now regarded by Filipinos as Heroes and Patriots of the Philippines. Macario SakayMacario Sakay was born on Tabora St in Tondo Manila in 1870. Hardly knowing his father, Sakay was given the surname of his mother. Just as both Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto were born and bred in the Tondo district, Sakay is regarded to be made from the same mold. The Tondo district in the late 1800s comprised of the working class and natives of the lower echelons of society. For those living within the area it became the norm to be skilled in several different professions. The early known adolescent years of Sakay were spent working as a barber, a tailor, and a stage actor for Komedya and Moro-Moro plays. In 1894 Macario Sakay joined the Katipunan alongside Emilio Jacinto. Initial work with the Katipunan were spent working closely with Emilio Jacinto and Andres Bonifacio. Gregoria de Jesus states Sakay also helped in operating the Kalayaan newspaper press of the Katipunan.

    PLATFORMS OF PHILIPPINE PARTIES: THE POLITICS OF EXPEDIENCE, 1902-1913 RA WLEIN SOBERANO The termination of American military rule at the turn of the cen- tury brought hope to many ·Filipino leaders that the transition to a civilian form of government would be smooth and easy. What they did not know was that the United States had other ideas concerning the length of time it would take between total American rule and· a measure of Filipino self-rule. Within a short time, however, new political parties mushroomed, equipped with various, seemingly divergent platforms, al1 claiming to promote the besr interests of the Islands. What was responsible for the birth of these political_parties? Did they have the welfare of the people at heart? Or did their leaders sec them as vehicles to instant fame and fortune at the expense of the honest hopes of their potential supporters? What was the general reaction of the American authorities? Were they enthusiastic about, or suspicious of these parties' goals? These and similar related questions will be the subject of this paper. The re-election of President William McKinley brought about the formation of the Partido Federal (Federal Party) which advocated paci- fication and annexation of the Philippines by the United States. Its members, who were prominent .     i YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW: A STUDY OF AURELIO TOLENTINO’S ARTICULATION OF NATIONALISM AND IDENTITY THROUGH THEATRE IN THE PHILIPPINES DURING THE AMERICAN COLONIAL PERIOD Lily Ann B. Villaraza, Ph.D. Department of History Northern Illinois University, 2017 Trude Jacobsen, Director This dissertation centers on the importance of cultural production to the process of creating a coherent national identity and a unified political state in the Philippines. More specifically, I will examine role of theatre in relation to the general development of the nation and the state through Aurelio Tolentino’s plays Luhang Tagalog and Kahapon, Ngayon, at Bukas. The Philippines and Filipino people pose a unique case study in the formation of both a specific and coherent national identity and an independent political state space because of geography, varied cultural influences, linguistic diversity, and colonial past. Because of these factors, it is a wonder that a coherent Philippine state exists, much less the generally accepted notion of a Filipino national identity. I argue that cultural production, particularly theatre, actively championed the broader acceptance of a singular Filipino national identity and individual belonging to a collective state at one of the most critical moment in Philippine history; the exit of Spanish colonial rule, the entrance of American imperial rule, and active assertion of political independence of the Philippine Islands by and for the Filipino people. The knowledge formation and critical dialogue occurring through theatre nurtured the notion of a Filipino national identity and buoyed the possibility of a Philippine state across the diverse linguistic and geographic terrain of the archipelago in opposition to the emerging American empire.

Using archival material from the period, it reveals how the American colonial administration complained that the newspapers in the Philippines were mainly political, a Spanish inheritance in the archipelago as many newspapers were founded in the Philippines in the 1890s of the nineteenth century after the law of press was passed in 1883. This article also emphasizes the political clout papers possessed and the threats that they posed to the new American administration. In particular, this article shows how newspapers such as El Resumen avoided censorship and dared to say what other parties did not. El Resumen was a voice for Philippine national hero Jose Rizal and what they published in “Our Wishes” were Rizalʼs wishes for his country. An analysis of articles in El Resumen demonstrates that the censorship of the press was attenuated and depended on the governor-general. Therefore, this article questions the influential argument in Philippine historiography about Spanish censorship of the press. El Resumen served as an example for other newspapers that were founded during the beginning of the American colonial administration such as La Independencia and above all El Renacimiento.
