Dear Friends,

Don’t fall for the devil’s trap of yielding to discouragement. He will use it to lead you to feeling hopeless and oppressed. As soon as you feel heaviness coming upon you, take immediate action.

Isaiah 54:14 says, “You will be established in righteousness. You will be far from oppression, so you will not be afraid. You will be far from destruction, so it won’t come near you." Isaiah 61:3 says that there is a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.

What can you praise God for? Regardless of how you feel, begin praising Him for who He is. The God of love. The faithful and merciful God. The God Who delivers. The God who never fails or forsakes you.

Thank Him for everything you can think of. For the specific times He has come through for you in the past. For sending His Son Jesus to die for you so that you would not have to spend eternity in hell.

Praise and thanksgiving will change your perception. It will move your focus from the bigness of your problem and onto the greatness of your God. As you praise and thank Him, oppression will leave and encouragement, strength, and hope will return.

Would you like to pray in these words? "I am not moved by how I feel. I choose to praise and thank You Lord Jesus for all that You have done for me. You are more than enough, You are faithful, You are so good to me! Amen."

Beloved, our prayer for you is that you will live in love and joy of the Lord.

George and Joyce Irwin

P. S. Last month we had the privilege of airing a message on 'The Great Exchange At The Cross' plus 'The Passion Of the Christ' in Hindi on two different local cable TV channels. This week I shall be heading to Siliguri in West Bengal to speak at a leadership conference. Please do pray for us. Thank you very much.

Pastor George Irwin will be visiting our Churches in September (speaking at a service on the 14th) If you would like to contribute to- wards a collection for George Irwin’s travel to the UK in September, please give your donations to one of the Churchwardens (small and large donations appreciated)

If you would like to contribute towards a gift for Sylvia, our Young People and Community Co-ordinator, a collection plate will be available at services at our Churches, or please forward your donation to the Parish Office. Sylvia’s last day will be on 7th July, with her last service being at St. Andrew’s on Sunday 6th July. Please keep Sylvia and Dan in your prayers, especially as they await the arrival of their baby in August. PAGE 6 CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST

I don’t know if you read our local paper, The Sentinel? I am a supporter of a local paper because of it being a good route into the local community to inform or stir things up. There is no other media, no not even the local radio stations, since many people do not listen to these radio stations, which seem to have deteriorated into some banal juvenile output that is not now promoting sufficient interest to encourage listeners.

There are many subjects of course that get an airing on the Letter Page, frequently the best part of the pa- per; however it is surprising sometimes what people write about and their point of view of things. A certain Reverend, well known and respected, has written a letter seeming to disclaim the power of God. He has a view to make and I rather think that he is teasing us to respond to it. His point is that singing hymns to ‘Almighty God’ does not make the statement believable. He makes the point that God does not intervene in preventing human and climatic trauma, (his words).

Well I don’t think that God probably does, except on some occasion when we may say lamely, that some- one must have been watching over someone who has had a ‘lucky escape’. I found this rather odd coming from a and it would mislead people into doubts over the power of God and subsequently prayer.

The Padre seems to be wanting God to be more forthcoming in using His power to prevent things like the Turkish miners, the South Korean Ferry plus the ‘still grieving families of the Aberfan disaster’ his words. Well, how many disasters have been averted that we don’t know about? Perhaps there should have been a major pile up on the M6 on Wednesday that didn’t happen, that we don’t know about, so we haven’t thanked God for all the disasters that did not happen. Maybe Lewis Carroll would have put it better if you see what I mean?

It begs the question; what is your concept of God? One letter writer accused Christians of believing in a bearded man with a long white shirt on. He must have been thinking of Old Father Time. The truth is, as I see it, that God experienced humanity and its problems in the figure of our Lord Jesus. Jesus gives us a means of focussing on a God within our own intellectual experience. Otherwise, with God being neither man or woman, it gave rise to people forming and creating some image that they could look to as their god, and numerous they were too. The Christian story, along with the Jewish Old Testament is the most re- searched and evaluated history of worldly events. The Faith is often defied by people of varying degrees of intelligence and education, but as with so called atheists, it suits there lack of knowledge and often life style. Plus they think wars are practically all about religion which they are not. So be confident that evolution does not stop with the end of life.

I hope that my articles were thought provoking and even informative. I know that many people actually like them, however I think the time has come to make way for someone else to write in from a layman’s point of view. So for now thank you for the kind comments that I have received over almost ten years, and thanks to our Vicar, Steve Osborne for his encouragement. Like Bruce Forsythe, I think it is time to go.

I may drop a note or two from time to time and our Young at Heart will not shake me off just yet. Cheerio for now!

Dear Children

My nephew Dominic often has his mate Paul to stay. One evening after they had had a good session on the computer games, they wandered into the living room where Dominic's Dad was fast asleep in the armchair. They grinned at each other and Dominic put his finger to his lips as he picked up his pencil case from a side table and took out a black felt tip pen. He crept over to his Dad and very gently drew a moustache on his face. His Dad did not stir. Dominic and Paul giggled as they sat back and surveyed Dominic's handiwork. The moustache was very neat and resembled Hercule Poirot's moustache. He is Agatha Christie's Belgian detective who you have no doubt seen on TV.

Shortly after, Mum entered the room with a cup of tea for Dad. When she saw his face she began to laugh. As Dad woke up he was puzzled to see them all laughing. "What's the joke?" he asked. They shook their heads and laughed even more. "Come on, share the joke", he said. Eventually Mum said "Go and look in the mirror". So off he went and came back with a walking stick, imitating Poirot's mincing walk. Everyone laughed. "I rather like the moustache", said Dad. "I think I will grow one. "Oh No! " said Mum. "Oh Yes", said Dominic.

A moustache might change Dad's appearance but it would not change his personality. He would be the same "good old Dad". We might try to change our image to copy a footballer, a pop star or TV celebrity but we cannot change the person we are quite so easily. We all want to look smart. It is important for our self respect and for the impression we give to others. But it is the way we behave that makes the greatest impact. Are we kind and helpful? Are we happy or miserable? Are we generous or miserly?

Some of you may have heard of Simon Weston a Welsh Guardsman who was horrifically burned on the British ship Sir Galahad when it was destroyed during the Falklands War. Simon was unrecognis- able and after many, many operations and skin grafts he recovered with a badly scarred recon- structed face. How could he face the world? He did, because inside he was still a courageous CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST PAGE 11 man. He did not hide his face. He thought of others. He has done so much good work in helping others that he was awarded the OBE. Recently his portrait was accepted and hung in the National Gallery. When visitors look at his portrait they look beyond the scars to the character of the man. An example for us all. God bless you all. Uncle Jim

ST. PETER’S CHURCH OF AIDED PRIMARY SCHOOL SCHOOL LANE, CAVERSWALL, ST11 9EN HEADTEACHER: MR CHRISTOPHER BURTON. TEL: 01782 393118

As I write, year six children across the country are breathing a huge sigh of relief to mark the end of their end of year six SATS tests. The demands placed on them this year have once again been great with the introduction of a level six test for those judged to be advanced enough to sit it.

Sighs of exasperation, disbelief and exhaustion were emitted from our children after they finished the very gruelling round of testing, ‘ that was rock’ being the consensus of opinion from our children.

As teachers, every year we reflect on the unfairness of the system we are bound by, why do we put children through such things at so young an age? We now have to test children as early as year one and next year during their reception year!!! For children to do what is expected of them is no longer acceptable, they must do more than expected and we as teachers must come up with ever more inventive methods of teaching to ensure that every last bit of potential is extracted.

My apologies for the rant. I am as usual extremely proud of our wonderful year six children and their superb attitude to the tests. A large majority of them have been telling me how determined they are to do well and how much revision and practice they have been doing during their own time. These ad- mirable qualities of dedication and independence are the things that as pri- mary school teachers we strive to teach and nurture so when the day comes when children are required to fend for themselves, they are well equipped, intelligent, well rounded individuals capable of taking on the world and everything that it throws at them. Well done year six!

We are now looking forward to our half term holiday (one week to go) and then the final half term of the academic year (where did that go?).

As usual the last half term will be very busy as we prepare for our end of year concerts and award ceremonies before we all finish for our summer holidays.

Pray for Families of Women Killed for Faith On April 30 and May 1, three Christian women were killed in separate incidents by Muslim family members. A 38-year-old woman was shot to death by her two brothers shortly after they learned that she had been talking with a missionary over Skype and that she had a Bible. In a second incident, a man stabbed to death his 22-year-old sister when he caught her with a Christian CD. The woman had previously talked with her brother about Jesus. The man left his sister's body in front of a hospital before seeking treatment for his own hand wound at a government hospital. In the third incident, a man beat his daughter to death by hitting her on the head with a stone. He turned himself over to police and confessed to the killing, knowing that he probably would not face serious punishment. He reportedly told police that his daughter had continued to attend church despite his warnings. Please pray for those impacted by the women's deaths, their fellow believers, friends and loved ones. Please also pray for those leading this group of believers during this very difficult time.

VOM-Nigeria Volunteer Killed Boko Haram militants murdered a VOM volunteer in Gwoza, Borno state, in late April as he was deliv- ering hundreds of VOM-Nigeria newsletters. "His death shocked almost all the Christian community," said a VOM worker in Nigeria. In his work with VOM, the volunteer had used his own vehicle to trans- port attack victims to hospitals as part of our VOMedical work; served as a contact person between VOM staff and widows, attack victims, and Christian leaders and pastors in his community; and dis- tributed VOM newsletters. His killers reportedly stole 500 newsletters from his car, and pastors in the area are praying that the newsletters will minister to the militants. Christians in Gwoza, only about five miles from the Cameroon border, have experienced repeated attacks from Boko Haram insur- gents. Thousands have fled the city, and hundreds of homes, churches and businesses have been razed.

Pray for Christians Facing Increasing Dangers Believers in Aleppo have asked for continued prayer, as tensions between army officials and rebel forces have increased since April 12. The city has been without electricity and water for days, and shortages of gasoline and food have caused prices to skyrocket to as much as five times the normal rate. A VOM contact said that while travelling to Aleppo, the bus he was in was stopped for five hours because of the danger of sniper attacks. "I know that we are living under a daily danger of mortars, but waiting for a bullet to go through the bus window to kill you is something different!" he said. Communion services leading to Easter were cancelled as a result of the increased danger, but Good Friday and Easter services were held as planned.

Pray for Christian Teen Being Prevented from Attending Church A 16-year-old Christian girl is being prevented from attending church by her Buddhist family mem- bers. "Tien" loves God and loves attending church, but her family has prohibited her from attending church because she refused to go to temple with them. Tien continued to attend church despite her family's demands, until her grandmother began coming to the church every week to yell at church leaders. Tien has stopped attending church because she does not want to cause the church trouble. "I really love God and I want to go to church," Tien said. "Please pray for me, that one day my grand- mother or my family will understand me."

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all to- gether in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2:1-4 NIV)
