Dear Friends,

Psalm 40 verse 2 says, “He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and mire. He set my feet on the solid ground and steadied me as I walked.” Everyone goes through seasons when they feel like they are in a pit. That pit can be a frustration or disappointment or a feeling of discourage- ment, despair or hopelessness. And maybe you can’t see a way out, but you’ve got to know that God is still with you, and He will make a way where there seems to be no way. Remember, God will never waste anything you go through in life. If you will keep the right attitude, He’ll turn that situation around for your good. It doesn’t matter how you got there, whether it was by your own poor choices or maybe someone else treated you unfairly, God wants to use that situation to do a work in you. He’ll take that evil and turn it around for your good. You may be uncomfortable at times, but you’ve got to know that you are growing, and God is building your character. So today, make the decision to shake off any negative, self-defeating mindsets. Choose to cooperate with God. Trust that He is preparing you for promotion. As you keep an attitude of faith, expectancy and thanksgiving, He will lift you up and set you on the solid path of victory He has in store for you!

Would you like to pray this prayer right away? “Father, I lift my eyes to You for my help comes from You. Thank You for doing a work in my life. Thank You for using every situation in my life for my good. I praise You today no matter what is going on around me, knowing that You have a good plan for me in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

God bless and keep you. George & Joyce Irwin

P. S. Thank you for your prayers in our behalf. With your help I was enabled to minister to 200 leaders in Siliguri as well as to a group of 80 young people in Chandigarh several of whom were filled with the Holy Spirit.

Please see the July Prayer Diary for an urgent prayer request from Pastor George whose state and local community has been affected by the severe flooding that is causing much suffering in India at this time.

If you would like to contribute towards a collection for George Irwin’s travel to the UK in September, please give your donations to one of the Churchwardens (small and large donations appreciated) CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POS T PAGE 7

This month at Messy Church we discovered a man called Joseph. We made a coat of many colours, sang songs, and heard about the story of Joseph!

Joseph had many brothers who were jealous of how much his father loved him, so one day they sold him to some passing traders, they put him on a camel and took him to Egypt. After going in prison for something he didn’t do Joseph gained Pharaohs'’ trust by interpreting dreams. He collected food so it could be shared out when there was a famine in Egypt. We shared our food at Messy Church too, with a buffet of sandwiches and finger food.

We had fun making father’s day cards, fingerprint people and baking bread. We even made a cardboard camel in junk modelling. As well as playing football and giant connect 4 outside. We even has a go at chalk drawing on the slabs outside the church doors. Look at the pictures be- low; or check out the display in the foyer at St. Andrew’s and see how we get messy!

Please come along to our next Messy Fun Day on Saturday 13th July from 1pm at St. Andrew’s where we will be learning all about being generous! If you are interested in finding out more contact the Parish Office: 01782 312 570.

As I write this, it is reported on the BBC that to-day is the Sum- mer Solstice at Stonehenge. I don’t know if you have ever been close up to these huge stone workings? Or even tried to guess what they were for? Stones that were dragged from miles away, how or why is a complete mystery. Doing things the hard way I suppose was all people expected of life, and hard it would be some six thousand years ago. Who organised the work? Why? How did they decide on the design and shape of the structure? Did the people who did the work volunteer or what? After all, the population of the area, as with the country, would not be great. Communication would be er- ratic.

When Britain was forming an Empire, in the days of Queen Victoria, the population of the Nation was only about twelve million. We now have cities with a population of those many people.

Today we have gadgets that not only did not exist then, but not even a few years ago. Electronic gadgets that it would appear many people cannot do without. To most children apparently they are a must have item, or several items; computer, telephones that also take pictures and photo- graphs, and electronic access to books. The wonderful world of electronics makes things so small yet so powerful. Gigabytes of memory, storing your own writings or files of correspondence, infor- mation beyond any imagination years ago. I still have a 5 inch floppy disc, superseded by a 3 inch neither of which are now used. We have memory sticks with no moving parts to store heaps of in- formation on. Indeed I have most of what I have written for the magazines over some nine years on such a stick, which is about one and a half inches long (say 3.75 centimetres) and quite slim. For the uninitiated, I load them from my computer of course.

I wonder now if the uprising of people, across several countries, has not been instigated, by the ready access to what is going on in the countries that are not restricted by laws and taboos, imposed upon the population of a country that is severely restricted and authori- tarian. The communist governments collapsed because people could see from their televisions what the West was like and they could see what a rotten existence they had, especially the young who would not put up with it. Now the so call Arab uprisings are taking place and a bloody upheaval that is too. However, people will react to the pressures which they are under and the Governments will feel the threat of an uprising if they do not adjust to peo- ples expectations. Change bursts upon the authorities who fail to recognise or respond to the peo- ple who in the end will bring about change at any cost.

We have to take care of what the children are watching; so, change is not always for the better if there is no guidance given. But who is to decide and give such guidance? We have now the Girl Guides who are dropping from their promise of duty to God in the Guides Promise. Now that will improve our young girls won’t it? Seems to me that the Guide movement is going backwards and they deserve to. I invested very many young lads and the Scout Promise included a promise to CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POS T PAGE 9 God. That was how Baden-Powell and Olive Baden-Powell intended it. The Scout movement was copied firstly by Russia who formed their own equivalent called the Young Pioneers and there was no Duty to God mentioned. Hitler had his Hitler Youth and Hitler was it’s god. I came across a camp of British Young Pioneers once when my own troop was camping nearby. The weather was wet and windy and the Young Pioneers were hopelessly trying to cope. I volunteered to take some of them into our camp and give them some food and drink. They would not hear of it so I give up on them. They were hopeless at camping compared to our standard. They have fizzled out of course.

With the Guides, it appears to me just another case of a politically correct ruling. Someone will counter such a view with “we have to cater for all religions”. Well, mine was a Church Group but we took anyone who cared to come. They came from all over the Chell and Tunstall area.

There is absolutely no excuse to dumb down and give God His marching orders. It will not, I am sure, turn out to be the same successful movement that it once was. It is all about LEADERSHIP from those at the Top.

I was not impressed with the Archbishop of Canterbury copping out on casting his vote in the House of Lords. He decided that since the Bishop’s vote would not make any difference to the out- come of the Same Sex Marriage Bill, the Bishops would abstain. Cowards all! No one has the au- thority to mess about with what has been a well accepted practice for centuries, without any prompting from us, the people. Legalities, even blessings are no problem to me but a marriage is between a man and a woman and will always be. No Grey Areas! The Archbishop should lead by example and not be afraid to. He will not have made any friends just for abstaining; it is hardly support for or against. I am disap- pointed in him. Try to perform Romeo and Juliet with two blokes! Stupid, but somebody will probably tell me that Shakespeare had to use two blokes because of the law against women being on a stage in those times. Times have changed but hold on; some things de- serve more thought and less imposition. Jesus did not ask anyone to denounce what the Jewish faith proclaimed. After His death, his contemporaries wrote of His life, the existing Torah became the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus became the New Testament. He spoke of God the Father and love for one another. Without any massive stones, newspapers or electronic gizmos’ the world would know of our Lord Jesus. You’d better believe it!

Can I just say that the local Caverswall Cricket Club (close to my home) is advertising in our magazine. You do not have to be a member to make an initial visit to the clubhouse. On a nice Saturday afternoon during August, go and visit this lovely 5 acre site and watch a match, plus what ever you like to drink.

As with the Church, It is good for the community to get together and to meet one another.

Dear Children

During the last school holiday, my nephew Dominic went to North Wales for a week with his Mum and Dad. They were fortunate in having lovely weather , so one day Dominic's Dad suggested that the two of them should go on a fishing trip, while Mum could do some sunbathing. Neither of them had been out to sea before, so it was going to be quite an adventure.

They motored to Anglesey and joined the trip at Holy- head Marina.. There were about ten anglers on the fishing boat. Some of them were new to fishing like Dominic and his Dad, but the Skipper and his mate were very friendly and helpful. All the anglers were issued with lifejackets, rods and reels, and the novices were shown how to prepare the bait. Dominic was very impressed to learn that there would be free hot drinks and snacks!

The bracing sea air gave Dominic's cheeks a glow and he felt on top of the world. The sun was shining and the sea was calm. Once out to sea, the fish began to bite. Dominic was thrilled with his first catch which was a mack- erel. His Dad then caught a dog fish. They became very excited as they caught more fish , and they could see other anglers having similar success.

The time passed so quickly after having refresh- ments. Soon they had to return to the Marina. They were about 35 miles from the shore as they set off for home. Suddenly the sky clouded over and the gentle breeze changed to a strong wind. Dominic felt the boat rocking. Waves washed over the side. Rain began to pour and trickled down his waterproofs and life jacket. Luckily he was wearing wellies! He began to feel scared and he moved closer to his Dad. Dad was not feeling too confident either! The Skipper called "Is everyone OK? The storm will soon pass, so keep calm. We are not far from land". He was used to rough seas. Sure enough, as they returned to the Marina the sun was shining again and Dominic and his Dad proudly carried in their catch.

This little incident reminded me of the story in St. Matthew's Gospel of the time when Jesus and his disciples were crossing Lake Galilee in a boat. Suddenly "without warning a furious storm came up on the lake so that the CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POS T PAGE 13 waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping . The disciples woke him saying "Lord save us! We're going to drown!" But Jesus got up and said "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" He rebuked the wind and the waves, and at once the sea became calm!

We can experience storms in our lives without going to sea! Sometimes a storm is raging within our heart because of an injustice , a quarrel, a disappointment or jealousy. We have to eventu- ally calm down, otherwise we would be drowned in a sea of anger and hate! That is how wars start! No doubt your Mum sometimes tells you to "calm down".

If you have faith in Jesus, he is always there to calm you . Next time a storm of anger or resentment is raging within you, ask Jesus for his love and peace. You will suddenly find that all is calm!

With love from

Uncle Jim

Hello Uncle Jim, where ever you are, My dearly loved Uncle, most favourite by far; How are you these days; are you with Fred? Frying steaks in the kitchen, do you eat them with bread? It’s been cold today; we’ve had some snow, What’s the weather like there, will you let me know? Do you still have televisions in every size? Or did Uncle Hal move them, thinking it wise? There used to many, all covered with dust, And heaps of old iron, starting to rust; The scullery smelled of coal-tar soap; As I think of these things, I’m beginning to hope, You have some of these things – in Heaven!

I remember each Wednesday, the chocolates and sweets, You and Fred brought us a bag of these treats; I’ll send you a bag from here if I can, What’s your address – in Heaven? And as long as I live I will never forget, When I saw you in Fenton, the day we last met, And I promised I’d call to see you and Fred, But I broke my promise, then learned you were dead I am so sorry, much sorrier, than words can tell; For I do love you both, and I love you so well; And that’s why I decided to write you this letter, I hope when you read it, it makes you feel better. Will you write back – as soon as you can? A letter for me and another for Ann – from Heaven

All My Love Keep in Touch You know that I love you very much

A kiss for you and a kiss for Fred – I never met my Uncle Ted, For Dear Uncle Hal for John and for Grace – together again in a heavenly place; A kiss for Lila for Violet and June – I trust you’ll write back very soon! For Gladys, Tom, Sam and for Jack, I’ll be sure to say, ‘Thanks’ if you do write back. A kiss for Bella with beautiful face, so full of goodness, so full of Grace; A kiss for each sister, and one for each brother, I know just how much, you care for one another; And a whole row of kisses, just for my Mother XXXXXXXXXXX From now on, I’ll try to be good, with love once again, from your Rosebud

ST. PETER’S CHURCH OF AIDED PRIMARY SCHOOL SCHOOL LANE, CAVERSWALL, ST11 9EN HEADTEACHER: MR CHRISTOPHER BURTON. TEL: 01782 393118

Well it’s almost here… the end of the academic year. I find it difficult to believe I’m saying that.

As usual, there is so much going on at school, the preparations and rehearsals for our end of year performance of ‘Joseph’ are in full swing and children can be seen wearing some very strange variations of their school uniform which I presume are parts of their costumes.

The staff are very busy as usual, end of year reports have been completed and are being collated and proof read as we speak ready to go out at the end of next week.

Our Year six children will be setting off for their residential trip to Standon. I completed my own full week there last year with children from my previous school. Over the years, I have visited children at Standon many times and am always amazed at how much they enjoy themselves. The opportunity to complete activities that we would never be able to provide at school such as caving, scram- bling and rope climbing is something they all enjoy.

We are also approaching the time when our year sixes move on to their new schools. Over the years, there have been year six cohorts that cause the whole school to breathe a sigh of relief that they have gone. Not this year, our year sixes are wonderful children who are turning into independent, confident individu- als, I love to chat with them when I see them around school (and they get my sense of humour) so it will be a sad time when they go in just over three weeks time.

Three weeks sounds like no time at all but in my experience it’s usually the busi- est time of the year. I look forward to finding out what the end of year is like at St Peter’s and evaluating my most enjoyable first year.

Laos--New Believers Threatened with Eviction Source: VOM Sources James 1:27 A widow in a village north of Vientiane was threatened with eviction from her house recently because of her conversion to Christianity, a VOM worker reports. "Palila" and her two children, who became Christians last year, live in a house on her uncle's land. Palila's uncle reportedly tried to force her to renounce her faith, threatening that if she didn't she would have to leave his land immediately. The pastor of Palila's church has allowed her to build a house on his land for free, and the church has agreed to help provide wood and building materials. VOM has provided the funds necessary to buy metal roofing for the house, and Palila was also greatly encouraged by the teaching she received at a VOM-supported training seminar. Please pray that Palila and her children will be strengthened and encouraged in their faith and will remain strong despite persecution.

Egypt--Christian Newspaper Accused of Insulting Islam Source: VOM Sources Isaiah 8:10 Nagy Youssef, chief editor of a Cairo-based Christian newspaper called The Way and the Truth, has been accused of insulting Islam through the newspaper. A Muslim scholar brought the accusations to Egypt's attorney general, who then referred them to the North Cairo General Court. Nagy could face up to 10 years in prison on accusations of "stirring up the religious divisions and despising the Islamic regime." In response to the accusations written about him in various newspapers, Nagy reportedly said, "Thank God for this free advertising to our great newspaper!" Pray that God will grant wisdom to Nagy and his lawyer during this case, that the court will rule in their favour and that the newspaper The Way and the Truth will continue to be a light to many in Egypt.

Uzbekistan--Authorities Raid Home of 76-Year-Old Woman Source: Forum 18 News 2 Corinthians 12:10 Uzbek authorities raided the home of a 76-year-old Christian woman in March, destroying her books and fining her 10 times the monthly minimum wage. Authorities reportedly entered the home of Naziya Ziyatdinova through a window, without a search warrant, and insisted that she get out of bed. Naziya has great difficulty walking because she suffers from Parkinson's disease. After Naziya was taken to court, she "felt very sick, fearing harsher punishment." Local Christians said the Uzbek authorities "acted like bandits" and that the fine was completely "unaffordable." Threats, fines and torture by police and other officials are routine in Uzbekistan. Pray for the strength, courage and peace of Naziya and other Christians in Uzbekistan who face government oppression because of their Christian faith.

Sudan--VOM Project Pray for believers in conflict zones who receive essential medicines from VOM. Believers in these areas suffer intense persecution and lack basic medical care. The South Sudanese government is unable to help, and the government of Sudan, in the north, supports an ongoing campaign of genocide mixed with religious persecution.
