Caught out by a Cold Snap

As I sit writing this on a cold, frosty FEBRUARY day in January, I shouldn’t be Sunday 7 February surprised to see snow on the ground outside. It is, after all, winter! But Sunday next before Lent I’ve been caught out by this cold Exodus 34.29-35 snap. Lulled into a false sense of Luke 9.28-43 security by what so far has been a 10 February very mild winter, I didn’t expect it to suddenly turn so Ash Wednesday cold. So I was surprised when my car wouldn’t start this morning, even though it’s a notoriously bad starter in Joel 2.1-2,12-17 winter. Thankfully, I wasn’t going anywhere particularly John 8.1-11 important today, but my husband was, and my car was Sunday 14 February blocking his in, so he wasn’t too impressed! But to be 1st Sunday of Lent fair, he wasn’t prepared either. When he noticed a few Deuteronomy 26.1-11 weeks ago that one of our jump-leads was broken, he Luke 4.1-13 didn’t think he’d need it anytime soon, so he didn’t bother to get another set. Not that it mattered though, Sunday 21 February nd because our cars were also parked in opposite directions 2 Sunday of Lent in the drive this morning, so even if he’d had working Genesis 15.1-12,17-18 jump leads, they wouldn’t have reached from his car to Luke 13.31-35 mine. But there’s no excuse - we should both have been Sunday 28 February more prepared. This is winter, after all. rd 3 Sunday of Lent On one hand, this was just a minor mishap, soon re- Isaiah 55.1-9 solved with the aid of a battery charger which thankfully Luke 13.1-9 we did have. But it has reminded me of a much deeper truth. Often, especially when things are going relatively MARCH well in our lives, we fail to prepare for cold snaps. Sunday 6 March 4th Sunday of Lent / Winter is a regular occurrence, and there are things we Mothering Sunday can do to lessen its impact. So in the autumn, sensible (Mothering Sunday Readings): people dig out warm clothes, stock up on essentials, and get the central heating serviced. If they have a car, they Colossians 3.12-17 may also stock up on de-icer and anti-freeze, and jump Luke 2.33-35 leads! Sunday 13 March 5th Sunday of Lent How can we prepare similarly for the cold snaps in our Philippians 3.4b-14 lives which are sure to come? John 12.1-8

The Psalmist says, Sunday 20 March Put not your trust in princes nor in any human power, for Palm Sunday there is no help in them …. Happy are those who have Philippians 2.5-11 the God of Jacob for their help; whose hope is in the Lord Luke 22.14-23.56 their God. (Psalm 146:2,4) 24 March

We prepare for cold snaps in our lives, by living every Maundy Thursday day with the Lord and trusting him for all that was, and 1 Corinthians 11.23-26 is, and will be. He is our provision in the summer of our John 13.1-17,31b-35 lives when all is warm and sunny, and in winter times Sunday 27 March when life feels cold and hard. Don’t let yourselves be Easter Day caught out by a cold snap; put your hope in the Lord, today and every day. 1 Corinthians 15.19-26 Luke 24.1-12 PAGE 3

A big THANK YOU to all who have supported the Pre-School & Church Christmas Fair at St. Andrew’s on Saturday 21st November. Much fun was had and the event a good success. Many thanks to the Pre-School, who have donated £200 of the £500 they raised to Church funds. A further £200 was raised on the Church stall. MANY THANKS for all who supported the Christmas Fair at St. Peter’s on Saturday 29th November. A wonderful time was had, with many community members attending and over £1,000 raised.

£200 was also raised for the Caverswall Parish this year from the Christmas Greetings contributions. Thank you also for your support in purchasing Christmas cards from St. Peter’s, and to Gill Till for making these. MANY THANKS also to all who have supported our special services and activities at our team of Churches this Christmas, in practical support, attendance, financial giving and in prayer.

Please continue to keep the ministry of the Churches in your prayers this New Year and onwards.

A huge thank you for the support given by all for the Andante Choir Evening of Song at Dilhorne on Friday 11th December. A total of £352 was raised on tickets. It was a fabulous Evening and including the Choir we had about 100 people attending. Many thanks for your support, from the Dilhorne Community

A BIG THANK YOU to all who kindly contributed broken gold and jewellery to the collection in aid of Church funds over the past few months, and to Maureen Virgo who kindly co-ordinated this. A wonderful £205 has been raised. Please bear in mind for future donations and pass any donations onto Maureen or the Office as suitable.

Thank you to all who have supported the event! Thank you especially to all who have served and taken part.

Congratulations to the winning trees (each receiving a £50 prize); Best School Tree: St. Peter’s CE Primary Best Centre User Tree: 1st Caverswall Brownies

Many thanks and well done to all who set up trees for the event from Schools, Centre Users, Local Businesses and Church Groups, including: Crescent Academy, Dilhorne CE Primary, Parkhall Academy, Weston Coyney Juniors, St. Andrew’s with St. Peter’s Pre-School, 3rd Caverswall Guides, Bickerton Bros., H&R Florists, the Railway Club, Dilhorne Bell Ringers, the Ladies’ Fellowship, the St. Andrew’s Music Group and Pauline Powell and Flossie Colclough for the Prayer Tree and the Holly and the Ivy display.

The event has been a good success, with lots of involvement from schools & the community. Nearly 100 children attended from local schools for craft sessions, which were a lot of fun, with many thanks to all who assisted with these. The Sing-a- long Carols was especially enjoyed as part of the festival, with thanks to Philip Harrison who attended to lead the music.

Many thanks on behalf of the children in need over- seas to all who have given a shoebox or shoeboxes for these children. 74 shoeboxes have been given by our 3 Churches this year, which is 7 more than last year, so well done. I have been told that is fairly certain that the boxes will be going to Liberia, North West Africa, where they will bring much pleasure to the children. At the entrance to our Churches there will be a ‘Thank you poster’ from Samaritan’s Purse. God bless you all for your effort & the children who receive the boxes. Thanks again, Beryl PAGE 8 CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POS T

In his new year Pastoral Letter, Bishop Mark reflects on the place of prayer in transforming the world.

You will remember how it was beginning a new exercise book at school or the first page of a diary- they are always very neat and then a few pages on you revert to your natural self! Well here we are at the start of a new year.

15 years ago we sat on the cusp of a new millennium. There was hope and passion for change that made a difference. Do you remember? Maybe like me, you sat up on New Year’s Eve with a lit candle in the window praying for a new start with God, the family and the world’s poor. We held services of hope and dedicated ourselves to reaching Millennium Development Goals. Here’s what we hoped and aimed for ten years ago:

Imagine that by the year 2015… 1. Poverty and hunger around the world will be cut in half. 2. Primary school education for all girls and boys in the world will be a reality. 3. Women everywhere will be respected, safe and enjoy all human rights. 4. Child mortality will be reduced by two-thirds. 5. The cases of HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB will begin to decline 6. The proportion of women dying in childbirth will be reduced by 75% 7. The number of people with access to safe water will double. 8. All countries will work together for people-centred development, debt forgiveness and fair trade.

These were our hope and our aims. And we prayed.

15 years on we can take stock. There are some achievements but the overall picture is that we have fallen short of these goals. Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary- General for the United Nations said in a report this year that: ‘The global mobilization behind the Millennium Development Goals has produced the most successful anti-poverty movement in history… yet for all the remarkable gains, ine- qualities persist and progress is uneven.’

For example, poverty and hunger has been halved but due to the global economic and food crises in recent years there are still 836 million living in poverty today. The pri- mary school enrolment rate in the developing regions has risen from 83% to 91% in the last fifteen years but 57 million children are still excluded from education (down from 100 million in 2000); 6 million children die before their fifth birthday from preventable causes (down from 12 million). We are on course to meet targets on safe drinking water; new HIV infections and AIDS deaths have peaked, but 13 million are still living with HIV. Over 6.2 million malaria deaths have been averted between 2000-2015; economic aid from developed countries increased by 66% in this period, reaching $135 billion. Despite these successes, however, the poorest and most vulnerable people are being left far behind.

In the face of such a challenge what are we to do? The Gospel and example of Jesus compels us not to turn our backs on the poor and vulnerable. As part of that effort what about a new start with an old habit: Prayer? CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POS T PAGE 9 Many of us struggle to keep a daily discipline of prayer and quiet when we are open to God and the direction of the Holy Spirit. However, if individually and corporately our relationship with God is weak, what do we have to share with the world? I have a feeling that to be bet- ter pray-ers we need to learn to be more natural – to simply plonk ourselves down before God and be ourselves; to come as we are with the concerns of others on our heart and mind. Somehow we get the idea that to do it properly, we must screw ourselves up and be so neat like the first page in those books. And because we don’t think we can really do it, we don’t try!

God loves his world and his people and the bible tells us that he has a special place for the excluded in his affections. Part of our apathy may be that we feel useless when faced with so much need and our own weakness and lack of resources. The lesson of the feeding of the 5000 is that God can make a lot out of a little. He longs to work through us for his good. So, like the small boy with his picnic by the lake, let us offer what little we have to God and ask him to make a miracle of it.

This New Year let’s start afresh with God and begin the change we long for in ourselves, our family and our local and global community. Let’s do it together and start now.

Mark Rylands, Bishop of Shrewsbury

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7 v 14

CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POS T PAGE 11

Dearly Beloved,

Romans 12.11 says, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord.”

Zeal is simply another word for passion. Sadly, too many people today have lost their passion and enthusiasm for life. At one time, they were excited about their dreams and woke up every day with purpose and enthusiasm. But now, because time has passed and they’ve experienced disappointments, they’re not as excited about those dreams anymore. They’ve lost their fire.

Today know that God wants you to live with delight! You weren’t meant to live a stagnant, ordinary life. You serve an extraordinary God, and you are called to be a reflection of Him. The truth is, most of life can be very routine. We have to work to keep things fresh. We have to put forth effort to stay passionate about our jobs, re- lationships, and our walk with the Lord.

Every day we need to stir ourselves up. Just like the apostle Paul told Timothy, we have to fan the flame! In other words, don’t let the fire go out. Stay passionate about your life and the dreams God has placed on the inside of you!

Would you like to pray at this moment? Say, “Father, thank You for Your Word which is truth that sets me free. Help me to stir up the passion in my heart so that I can stay on fire for You. Thank You for guiding and directing my steps so that I can embrace every dream and promise You have for me in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Wishing you a great year ahead in the love of God. George & Joyce Irwin

P. S. The programmes over the Christmas season went off well i.e. the picnic, the carol singing, the various get togethers, the candle lit march through town that was covered by the local newspapers and the messages that were aired on three local cable tv channels etc. Thank you so much for your partnership in all of this. You have a wonderful reward in store for you.

Attackers entered the home where the men were stay- ing, beat them and stole money, food and household items. Police took the Christians to the hospital for treatment but were unable to make any arrests in the attack. The stolen money had been intended for local persecuted believers. After recovering from the attack, the men returned to the area to continue their work.

Pray for Pastor Chang, Whose Church Was Demolished - China The Chinese government demolished the Yulin Christian Church on Jan. 6. Government workers dressed in camouflage uniforms hauled believers away before battering the build- ing with heavy machinery. This is China’s first church demolition in 2016. Please pray for Pastor “Chang” and all who attended the church. Pray for bold faith and guidance for a new worship location.

Pray for Najeeb and Family, Discriminated Against by Villagers - Pakistan Front-line workers in Pakistan recently met and encouraged a family who have been ostra- cized by their village since becoming Christians 10 years ago. The evangelism team was go- ing house to house in a remote village sharing the gospel, when someone told them about “Najeeb” and his family. “We were rejected and faced discrimination from the society for this,” Najeeb explained. “We remained steadfast in our faith.” Even the pastor who had discipled them stopped visiting because he was afraid of persecution by the other villagers. The front-line workers encouraged the family and left some Christian literature with them. In addition, the team host committed to visiting them regularly. “For the last eight years, we were out of Christian fellowship,” Najeeb said. “We thought someone would never come to us. Praise God!”

Pray for Christians Threatened by Islamic Militants - Senegal Christians in Senegal face increasing threats from Islamic militant groups. In the past year, Islamist activities have led to the arrests of three imams and two female Boko Haram members, who were discovered transporting explosives under their veils. As a security measure, the Senegalese government now prohibits Muslim women from wearing veils in public. Muslim leaders have since incited violence against believers, claiming Christians are to blame for the new restrictions. In some villages, Muslims have destroyed Christians’ homes and fields, stolen their property and beaten them. Christians remain strong in their faith despite the threat from militants, and many people have come to Christ in recent months.

Pray for Christians Targeted by Radical Hindus - India An evangelist was killed and another Christian couple hospitalized with life-threatening in- juries recently in two separate attacks by radical Hindus. The evangelist, who suffered ex- tensive injuries, died one day after being released from the hospital. He leaves behind a wife and 6-month-old child. The Christian couple was attacked a few days after his death.
