*Cutting Fabric A – large floral stripe: 1. On the lengthwise grain, cut (4) strips 4-3/8” wide, centering a paisley section in each strip. From these strips cut (24) identical pieces approximately 24” long, center a paisley motif in each section. Trim to 23” keeping the paisley motif centered. Trim off top corners at a 45° angle. Measure 8-3/8” from each bottom corner and trim off corner at the opposite 45° angle as shown.

Sew these trimmed-off corners together along outer edges; make 14 pairs, and set aside for 2nd border. Tapestry Rose

2. From the 3 floral strips remaining, cut (24) identical pieces approximately 12” long, and (24) identical pieces that are the mirror image of the first 24 pieces. Stack the pieces in 8’s, with each stack having 4 regular pieces and 4 mirror-image pieces. Make 6 stacks. From each stack, cut a 7-7/8” square. (Tip: Shift the position of each square slightly so that each square is different.) Cut squares once diagonally, and place a pin in each stack of triangles, securing all layers. 7-7/8"

Piecing the Blocks: Kaleidoscope Blocks (12) Using 1 stack of triangles, lay out the triangles as shown, with the same corner of the triangle in the center. Note that 2 different effects can be created from each set of triangles, simply by using the opposite corner in the center. Determine which effect you prefer, and sew the triangles together in pairs, then sew the pairs together to make a square as shown, pressing seams in one direction to make a spiral. (Tip: Remove stitches in seam allowance as shown.) Make 12 blocks.

Dutchman’s Puzzle Blocks (6) 1. Lay a 4-3/8” square of fabric B in opposite corners of each 8-1/4” square of fabric C, D, E & F. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner, and sew 1/4” each side of the line; cut along line and press seams away from fabric B. 2. Lay a 4-3/8” square of fabric B in remaining corner of each piece. Draw a diagonal line as shown and 1/4” each side of the line. Cut along line and press seams away from fabric B. 3. Sew the C & D units and the E & F units into pairs as shown. 4. Sew the C/D and E/F units together using photo as a guide to make each block. Make 6 blocks.

Setting Blocks 1. Sew a 4-3/8” paisley trapezoid to each short side of a 10-1/8” triangle of fabric G, from outer edge to seam line and backstitching. Sew the miter by sewing from outer edge to seam line and backstitching. Press mitered seam open and press seams toward paisley. Make 10 units. 2. Sew a paisley trapezoid to the long side of each 5-3/8” triangle of fabric G, centering triangle on shorter side of trapezoid. Press seam toward paisley. Make 4 corner units. Tapestry Rose

Assembly: 1. Using the photo as a guide, lay out the kaleidoscope blocks diagonally in 4 rows of 3. Insert a Dutchman’s Puzzle block between the kaleidoscope blocks. Add the large setting units to the top, bottom and sides, and the 4 corner units at the corners. 2. Sew the blocks and setting units together in diagonal rows, then sew the rows together. Press.

Borders: Note: Trim borders slightly to size as needed after they are sewn in place. 1. 1st Border: Sew the 79-5/8” fabric H pieces to sides of quilt, and the 60-7/8” pieces to top & bottom edges, pressing seams toward fabric H 2. 2nd Border: Stack 2 strips of fabric C on a horizontal line of your cutting mat. Trim off top left corner at a 45° angle. Measure 10-3/4” along bottom edge and trim at the opposite 45° angle. Now measure 10-3/4” along top edge and cut at the opposite 45° angle. Continue along strip, cutting a total of (8) small trapezoids.

3. Repeat with the remaining 4 strips of fabric C, cutting the trapezoids 15” to make (12) large trapezoids (you will need 10). 4. Repeat with the 3-1/2” strips of fabric G, using 3 strips to cut (8) 16-3/4” trapezoids, and 5 strips to cut (10) 21” trapezoids. 5. Sew the small fabric C trapezoids to the 16-3/4” fabric G trapezoids, sewing the longer side of the fabric C piece to the shorter side of the fabric G piece. Make 8 units. 6. Repeat with the large fabric C trapezoids and the 21” fabric G trapezoids. Make 10 units. 7. Sew the larger units together in 2 sets of 3, inserting a pieced paisley triangle pair between units and at each end. Add a small unit to each end, pressing seams toward triangle pairs. Add to the sides of the quilt, sewing from seam line to seam line and pressing seam toward 1st border.

8. Sew the remaining larger units together in 2 sets of 2, inserting a pieced paisley triangle pair between units and at each end. Add a small unit to each end, pressing seams toward triangle pairs. Add to top & bottom edges of quilt, sewing from seam line to seam line and pressing seam toward 1st border. Sew the mitered corners, sewing from outer edge to seam line and backstitching. 9. Sew a 91” strip of fabric I to each side and trim slightly if needed. Sew the two remaining 91” strips of fabric I to top and bottom edges, pressing seams toward fabric I. Trim slightly if needed. 10. 4th Border: Sew the 111” strips of fabric J to each side, and the 96” strips to top & bottom edges, pressing seams toward Fabric J. Trim borders slightly if needed.

Finishing: Layer the prepared backing, batting and quilt top. Baste and quilt as desired. Trim edges even with quilt top. Sew the prepared binding to the edges, turn and stitch in place. Sign and date your new quilt.
