The Bucktown Garden Walk is brought to you by

Jeff Lowe // [email protected] // 312.339.1133

Welcome! The Bucktown Garden Walk is now the Bucktown Neighborhood & Garden Walk. This year’s event brought some obvious challenges — but challenges breed creativity! We have limited participation to front gardens viewable from the sidewalk and parkways, and added public art, landmarks, schools, churches, parks and other notable places. Follow along using this guide and our Online Map. We have also included a sample of favorite neighborhood businesses—certainly not a complete list! Please note some businesses may be affected by Covid, call before visiting. Also this year, we have added Garden , sponsored by Alex Ilich of Wintrust Mortgage, featuring musicians and artists on the front porches of several Bucktown residences.

How to Use this Guide The guide is laid out in four quadrants, each quadrant contains an associated map. We have listed the map items by location. Simply follow the numbered garden circles sequentially or on a path that makes sense to you and you’ll hit all the other points of interest. Print or follow along on your phone, or use this guide in conjunction with the online map located at Bucktown.org.

Click on an artist’s name to read bio at the end of this guide. History of the Name ‘Bucktown’ The area around Milwaukee and Armitage was one of the early settlements of Chicago, predating 1833. Bucktown was named for the goats kept by the early Polish and German settlers. Male goats are called bucks, hence ‘Bucktown’ was born. In 1973 the Bucktown Community Organization (the BCO) and the surrounding community organizations established the borders of the neighborhoods, set at that time as: North Avenue on the south, Western on the West, Fullerton on the North and the Kennedy or the River on the East.

In 1895 a German contingent of the City renamed streets: Hamburg, Frankfort, Berlin and Holstein. During WWI names reverted to Anglo-Saxon names: McLean, Shakespeare, Charlestown, Palmer.

Western Avenue 2400 W Named as the Western Boundary of Chicago from 1851 to 1869, this really long (27.38 miles) street passes through many Chicago neighborhoods.

North Avenue 1600 N The northern border of Chicago upon its incorporation.

Milwaukee Avenue This street began as a Native American trail, predating the grid pattern of many of the streets it intersects. True to its name, it eventually winds its way up to Wisconsin. The muddy trail was first stabilized to a “plank” road with privately owned tolls in 1849. In 1865, gravel was added and eventually the road was paved. Through the centuries this corridor has seen horse-drawn busses, street cars, and eventually the elevated tracks which went all the way to Logan Square.

Damen Avenue 2000 W First named Fond de Lac Road, then changed to Robey for a west side developer, Damen was named for Father Arnold Damen, the founder of Loyola University, in 1927.

Armitage Avenue 2000 N The street is either named for A. Armitage, an early Chicago Mason, or Thomas Armitage, the founder of the American Bible Union. In 1863, it became the north edge of the city (in the section running through Bucktown) as Chicago edged north.

Wabansia Avenue 1750 N Named for Chief Waubonsie of the Pottawatomi Native American tribe. He was known for his peace-making efforts following the war of 1812 and Black Hawk War in 1832. Map Quadrant 1 North of Armitage, West of Damen

MAP 6 2119 N Hoyne We moved into our house last summer, a huge draw for us was the 8 raised garden beds in the side lot. Last year our home grown jalapenos and spicy arugula were highlights from the garden. This year we are growing tomatoes, brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale, peppers (spicy, sweet, & bell), collards, and a variety of herbs. We have an English garden vibe going on in the back of the yard with hanging baskets and containers of flowers.

7 2114 N Hoyne This parkway rock garden represents years of trial and error in parkway gardening. For years we tried to grow anything in the poor soil of the parkway but failed spectacularly. Finally we gave up, deciding instead to build up a rock garden and intersperse plants in soil we placed between the stones. A variety of climbers, creepers and other shade-loving plants, including puffs of clumping grass and a couple varieties of hostas, can be found in this 2-year old parkway garden. The front of the house is a work in progress, with a stone-filled “gabion basket” retaining wall on which climbing plants will grow in the future. The concrete porch is a perfect resting spot for a variety of containers. Keep an eye on future construction of a second floor porch which will provide more room for window boxes and containers, along with providing weather protection to the main entryway below.

1949 North Hoyne Avenue

MAP 9 2035 N Hoyne This yard was all dead bushes when we bought the house a few years ago and one of my first tasks was to make the front yard beautiful. A lot of the perennials came from my grandmother’s garden in the suburbs. Gardening is a big passion of mine and a great way to destress.

10 2040 N Hoyne The parkway has been planted to attract and host Monarch butterflies. Except for the magnolia tree at the side of the building, most of the other perennial shade plants were transplanted five years ago and have matured well. There are three separate seating areas so the residents can share the outside with privacy—even before social distancing was necessary. I planted milkweed for monarchs to lay their eggs on and the caterpillars to eat. Walk by in the fall and take a seed pod. Plant the seeds in a sunny spot in early winter or spring, then you, too, can attract and support the Monarchs. www.monarchwatch.org.

11 2068 N Hoyne My of rocks inspired me to first use the boulders to create beauty in the high-traffic parkways and that extended into the yard where you see a myriad of grasses, sedges and lush shade loving perennials. The three planters hold bold accent annuals. The gift of a front yard provides opportunity to share a smile and a bit of beauty with all who walk by!

12 2136 W Dickens My perennial parkway garden is in its 3rd year since my brother and I built it. Neighbors and passersby tell me it’s beautiful so I think it’s ready for the Garden Walk this year! I’ve added a new tree and some additional planters to enhance visual appeal. The garden directly in front of my house is planted with perennials, annuals and containers. Back garden is a highlight but know that’s off limits!

15 2327 W Dickens Our parkway and front yard are heavily shaded. The parkway has always been difficult to grow so we kept it simple with hardy ground cover and stepping stones. Containers are the main focus and are centered around ferns which give nice texture and bright green color which contrasts our yellow checker brick home. Our front garden also has peony bushes that bloom in the spring, daylillies, and potted annuals add a bit of color. We also have tulips and daffodils in the spring, but they’ll all be gone by the time of the Garden Walk. We do all the landscaping ourselves. Come check it out— these are all easy to manage plants you can do yourselves too. No green thumb required.

18 1918 N Wilmot We wanted to create a cozy, little front living space to enjoy our beautiful street! We put in stamped concrete and some simple landscaping to enhance it. This year I added a couple of statement pots with large greenery to complete the space.

Go to https://www.gofundme. com/f/support-the-bco-with-an-illinois-landscape to support the cause. The estimated 10’x90’ canvas of “Illinois Landscape” by Sam Marts envisions individual corn plants framed in a graphic grid. Corn has long been a foundation of the Illinois economy and an iconic landscape image of Illinois. The expressions, “Knee High” by the fourth of July or as “High as an Elephants Eye,” remain measures of the prosperity of our world.

Bucktown Green 1724 N Wilmot A Neighbor Space created to compliment the Library and under the Sponsorship of the BCO. The slight topography buries spills from a former dry cleaners.

21 1740 N Hoyne Designed as an easy to maintain urban garden oasis, vinca and Blue Moon & Halcyon hostas cover the front bed. Serviceberry and weigela shrubs add seasonal color and balance. A bleeding heart and assorted annual bulbs complete the bed. The side patio is lined with an assortment of ferns and Palace Purple heuchera. Climbing hydrangea make their way up one trellis, honeysuckle vine the other. Annual plants compliment the garden in the large container on the porch and in smaller containers along the front.

The Map Room 1949 North Hoyne Avenue

MAP 22 1764 N Hoyne The grand front entrance of this home by the 606 is reflected in the lush parkway which has been planted with a thoughtful variety of small shrubs, trees and perennials. Barberry, hosta, boxwood, azalea, hydrangea, weeping cherry and daylilies provide seasonal color and texture.

Churchill Cabinet Company 2111 W Churchill The street and park are not named for Winston Churchill, but rather this cabinet company, makers of small table-side jukebox cabinets and pinball machine playing fields. The building was converted into lofts, but the company is still making these parts at a factory in the Chicago suburb of Cicero.

23 1830 N Hoyne Multiple levels of landscape space are present in this terraced corner home. Custom planter boxes at the sidewalk are elegantly planted with purple and violet annuals to contrast with hydrangeas and Karl Forester grass. A multi- stemmed birch, weeping cyprus and pine are among the trees planted in the front landscape.

24 1846 N Hoyne I believe that our Domino Fence has become a local landmark. The main gate has the address in it 1 8 4 6. The dominoes became a signature as our house is named for my Aunt Dot who bequeathed the down payment for the house. Dominoes have Dots. As a popular game/fence has been well respected and without graffiti for over 30 years.

MAP 26 1815 N Leavitt Our garden is perfect for both humans and canines. It contains a crabapple tree that starts spring blooming with pink flowers before turning reddish green. Many yews provide privacy. The pots contain a mix of seasonal petunias. The area in front of the windows has rose bushes and annuals. Spring brings out hyacinths and daffodils while summer showcases lilies. The artificial lawn and gravel run accommodate the pups.

27 1852-54 N Leavitt One of the jewels of Bucktown! This European inspired design maintained by a master gardener features annuals and perennials along the pathway built of actual Chicago street brick from the turn of the last century.

28 1858 N Leavitt The parkway and front planters are an homage to our former neighborhood. We saw a similar design at a local park and thought what a great way to bring a piece of our past with us. We worked with a local Bucktown metal artist to design and build the planters. We love the contrast of the rusted out steel and prairie grasses in the parkway, and the tropical plants and flowers in the front planters which add bright pops of color.

29 1869 N Leavitt One of the first parkway gardens on the block in 2001, we began with a simple paver design to bring some interest to the flower beds lining the sidewalk. Contained in the parkway beds are lamium ‘Orchid Frost’ and ‘Archangel’, a variety of hostas, coral bells, and two holly bushes. Along the sidewalk on the property are two paver planters that contain coral bells, and impatiens, centered by a Japanese kerria, that has the first yellow blossoms of spring.

30 2215 W Cortland This quiet and contemplative garden includes well positioned stones and sculpture that enhances the subtle green of shade loving shrubs and perennials. The front garden features a weeping spruce. The raised stone parkway includes a lush variety of large hostas.

1631 North Milwaukee Avenue MAP Ehrler Park 2230 W Cortland Named for the BCO’s first president William Ehrler in 1988, this neighborhood park was originally the site of the first Bucktown School. The hawthorn tree at the front gate was located by Jens Jensen as a symbol of our prairie landscape.

31 1901 N Leavitt This corner lot boasts two parkways and takes advantage of both sun and shade. Boxwoods and strategically positioned boulders provide structure to the perennials that include Karl Forester grass, cranesbill, heuchera and alchemilla. Knockout roses provide bursts of summer color.

32 2137 W Cortland Abundance of annuals set in front of a 19th century cottage on a beautiful tree lined Bucktown street.

33 1921 N Leavitt Repeating vignettes of shade perennials add cohesion to the multiple parkways, side foundation and front garden of this corner home. Lush borders are created with boxwoods, yews, lamium groundcover, hosta, rhododendren and a variety of different hydrangeas. Junipers and turf grass complete the front garden.

Our garage-top kitchen garden is off-limits this year but is sending ambassador edibles to front-yard containers as a hint of what lies beyond view.

38 2042 W Homer, Garden Apt It delights me when neighbors refer to my garden as a “little urban oasis”. Back when my husband and I moved into our French-garden apartment, this space was far from being an oasis. With a few tips and tricks from some fellow plant enthusiasts, I was able to transform a huge mound of weeds and dry dirt into what you see today.

39 1901 N Hoyne Our little organic vegetable and herb container garden has grown over the years. It provides us with lots of excitement and pride as our summer-long efforts of watering and weeding turn into tangible (edible!) results. We love our late summer dinners that are filled with fresh organic produce. This year is the first year that we’ve started many of the tomatoes, cucumbers, kales, and swiss chard from seed....we’re crossing our fingers for a robust harvest.

40 2044 W Moffat This sunken garden mixes annuals with kitchen herbs, such as tarragon, oregano and chives. Salvaged bricks from the house’s original chimney line the beds. Other plants include vinca, sage, and prairie grasses.

Lincoln Tavern 1858 W Wabansia Wolcott was once Lincoln (there were three Lincoln’s), which is where this tap room got its name. It was once home to a genuine Wisconsin Supper Club, and has been family owned and operated since 1934.

Below Ground Houses 1838 W Wabansia and along Wabansia Chicago was built in a swamp and to get the sewers to flow “down hill” new pipes were built on top of existing streets and a new street was built above. Houses were left in the shadow of the streets, and whole businesses were created to lift houses up from these holes. Houses were built to make them easy to lift or the front door was built at the upper level. This and other houses along Wabansia and other streets are examples of such architecture.

50 1739 N Winchester We aspired to create a colorful oasis in our front garden, one where we could relax and read and enjoy the neighborhood. The maple tree is a nod to my husband’s Canadian birthplace and is just the right size for a city garden. With a very old tree in our parkway (with large roots above ground), we wanted to be careful not to damage the roots by digging to add a fence or planters. Our wonderful designer, Brent at BRL LANDesign, proposed the parkway planters, which his team fills every year with beautiful lush plants and flowers. One unplanned but lovely aspect of our garden is the winding ivy that connects our fence with our next door neighbors!

955 W Grand Avenue MAP The 606 along Bloomingdale, 1800 N From the 1870s through the 1890s, this stretch of the Chicago and Pacific Railroad Company track was at street level and killed thousands of residents at the crossings. In 1893 the City Council passed an ordinance mandating the railroads to elevate their tracks. In 1913, the Bloomingdale Line (now operated by Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad Company) became one of the last in the city to comply. The freight traffic was stopped in the 1990s and the space was converted to a public path / park. The 606 is a major investment by Chicago in park and open space and created and a much loved alternative transportation corridor.

MAP 64 1924 N Wolcott We moved in one year ago and the simple boxwoods in the front needed to go. In their place, we’ve created a lush oasis for butterflies, bees, and birds. Geranium, black eyed susan, hydrangea, and rhododendron returned this year and are anchored by a beautiful tri-color beech, Japanese maple and weeping cherry. This year, we’ve added dozens of annuals to both the yard and the parkway for an explosion of color. It’s a small space, but it feels lush and diverse in both the type and number of flowering plants and shrubs. I always enjoy mixing annuals, perennials, as well as veggie and herb plants in this space. This year, my colorful garden is dedicated to the loving memory of our first quail daughter, Chalupa. With keeping her spirit alive, we are anticipating that our new quail chicks will be hatching just before Garden Walk weekend! Make sure to stop by our garden as well as follow our continued quail journey @chalupathequail on Instagram. Thank you so much for visiting our green space in the city. #fairygarden #petquail”

65 1939 N Winchester The parkway is designed with two burning bush shrubs which provide bright fall color, as well as a weeping cherry. Moss lined planters add annual color to the brick fence and elegant ferns provide a warm welcome at the front entrance.

66 1934 W Armitage We moved in six years ago and the parkway was our first project. Our Winchester parkway includes loads of large leafed hostas, groundcovers and flowering quince. Knockout roses add a pinch of red. Annuals are planted to match the deck’s containers and planter boxes.

67 2017 N Honore Enjoy this thoughtfully designed, colorful front perennial garden and parkway. Sedums grow between the stepping stones and guide you through a cottage garden of roses, clematis, heuchera, yarrow, day lilies, Stargazer lilies, liatrius, cranesbill, hydrangea and loosestrife. The parkway includes salvia, astilbe, hosta, alliums, lysimachia, hydrangea and sedums.

68 2033 N Honore Our garden is increasingly becoming a tribute to roses! We have many colors, and we love them because they are strong, resilient, beautiful, and come back each year. Our once huge raspberry bush did not come back as big after the Polar Vortex, so we have added tomatoes, strawberries, and blueberries along the left side of our fence (looking in). We also added Walter, our Bears Gnome, to the garden. Can you find him? Enjoy!
