319 About the Contributors Jinjun Wang received the B.E. and M.E. degree from Huazhong University of Science and Tech- nology, China, in 2000 and 2003. He received the Ph.D degree from Nanyang Technological Univer- sity, Singapore, in 2006. From 2006 to 2009, Dr. Wang was with NEC Laboratories America, Inc. as a postdoctoral research scientist, and in 2010, he joined Epson Research and Development, Inc. as a seinor research scientist. His research interests include pattern classification, image/video enhancement and editing, content-based image/video annotation and retrieval, semantic event detection, etc. He has published over 30 journal and conference papers in those areas, and has six US patents pending. Dr. Wang served as Technical Program Committee Member of major international multimedia conferences, including ACM MM '08, IEEE PCM '09, IEEE MMM '09/'10, IEEE 3D-TV '09/'10, etc. He also served as peer reviewer of many journals and conferences. Jian Cheng is currently an associate professor of Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mathematics from Wuhan University in 1998 and in 2001, respectively. In 2004, he got his Ph.D degree in pattern recognition and intelligent systems from Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 2004 to 2006, he has been working as postdoctoral in Nokia Research Center. Then he joined National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation. His current research interests include image and video search, machine learn- ing, etc. He has authored or co-authored more than 40 academic papers in these areas. He was awarded LU JIAXi Young Talent Prize in 2010. Dr. Cheng served as Technical Program Committee member for some international conferences, such as ACM Multimedia 2009 (content), IEEE Conference on Com- puter Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR'08), IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME'08), Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM'08), IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV'07), etc. He has also co-organized one special issue on Pattern Recognition Journal, and several special sessions on PCM 2008, ICME 2009, PCM 2010. Shuqiang Jiang, associate professor. He received the Ph.D degree from ICT CAS, China in 2005. He is currently a faculty member at Digital Media Research Center, Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is also with the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Information Process- ing, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research interests include multimedia processing and semantic understanding, pattern recognition, and computer vision. He has published over 60 technical papers in the area of multimedia. He is a Member of IEEE and ACM. He serves as General Special session Co-Chair of Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM2008). After coming to USA, Wen obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in language and information technologies at the School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2005 and 2009. Wen’s research experiences center around two themes real-world applications and high-performance systems. He has researched several problems in learning, multimedia and human- machine interface and published in various journals and conferences. Wen is currently working at Siemens Corporate Research in New Jersey, USA as a research scientist. Xilin Chen received the BS, MS, and PhD degrees in computer science from the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), China, in 1988,1991, and 1994, respectively. He was a professor with HIT from 1999 to 2005 and was a visiting scholar with Carnegie Mellon University from 2001 to 2004. He was selected into the One Hundred Talent Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2004, and as a professor with the Institute of Computing Technology (ICT), CAS. He is now the director of the Intelligent Information Processing Division, ICT, CAS, and the director of the Key Lab of Intel- ligent Information Processing, CAS. He also leads the ICT-ISVision Joint Lab for face recognition. He has served as a program committee member for more than 20 international conferences in these areas, including ICCV, CVPR, ICIP, ICPR, etc. His research interests are image understanding, computer vi- sion, pattern recognition, image processing, multimodal interface, and digital video broadcasting. He received several awards, including China's State Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2000, 2003, and 2005, respectively, for his academic researches. He is the (co)author of more than 150 papers. Jie Yang received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Akron, Akron, OH, 1994. He is currently on leave from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pittsburgh, PA, and serves as a Program Director in the Division of Information Intelligence Systems at the National Science Foundation. He pioneered hidden Markov models for human performance modeling in his Ph.D. dissertation research. He joined the Interactive Systems Laboratories of CMU in 1994, where he has been leading research efforts to develop visual tracking and recognition systems for multimodal human computer interaction. He has been involved in the development of many multimodal systems in both intelligent working spaces and mobile platforms. His current research interests include multimodal human computer interaction, com- puter vision, and pattern recognition. Yongmian Zhang received the Ph.D degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2004. He held a Research position with the Department of electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His areas of research include information fusion, com- puter vision, Human ComputerInteractions. He is a member of the IEEE. Jixu Chen received the BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2003 and 2006, respectively. He is currently pursuing the PhD degree at 320 About the Contributors Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York. His areas of research include computer vision, pat- tern recognition, and their applications in human-computer interaction. He is a student member of the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society. Yan Tong, General Electric, Ph.D. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Tong received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 1997, an M.S. degree in com- puter engineering from University of Nevada, Reno, in 2004, and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineer- ing from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, in 2007. Dr. Tong’s Ph.D. thesis research focused on spontaneous facial activity modeling and understanding through the integration of a probabilistic model and computer vision techniques. At GE Global Research, she is active in biometrics fusion, face modeling and face alignment. She has 19 peer-reviewed publications and 4 book chapters. Qiang Ji received his Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington. He is currently a Professor with the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He is also a program director at the National Science Founda- tion, managing NSF’s computer vision and machine learning programs. He has also held teaching and research positions with the Beckman Institute at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, the Dept. of Computer Science at University of Nevada at Reno, and the US Air Force Research Laboratory. Prof. Ji currently serves as the director of the Intelligent Systems Laboratory (ISL) at RPI. Prof. Ji’s research interests are in computer vision and probabilistic machine learning and their applications in various fields. He has published over 150 papers in peer- reviewed journals and conferences. His research has been supported by major governmental agencies including NSF, NIH, DARPA, ONR, ARO, and AFOSR as well as by major companies including Honda and Boeing. Prof. Ji is an editor on several computer vision and pattern recognition related journals and he has served program chair, technical area chair, and program committee in numerous international conferences/workshops. Prof. Ji is a senior member of the IEEE. Giancarlo Iannizzotto (M ‘99 - SM 2009) received the M.D. degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Catania, Italy, in 1994 and the Ph.D. in Computer Science from the same University in February, 1998. From 1996 to 2006 he was Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Messina, Italy. Since 2006 he is Associate Professor at the same Faculty.
