Wall, Ph.D. ABSTRACT China, with its long history of using education to serve the nation, has committed significant financial and human resources to building world-class universities in order to strengthen the nation’s development, steer the economy towards innovation, and gain the prestige that comes with highly ranked academic institutions. The key economic shift from “Made in China” to “Created by China” hinges on having world-class universities and prompts China’s latest intentional and pragmatic step in using higher education to serve its economic interests. This thesis analyzes China’s potential for reaching its goal of establishing world-class universities by 2020. It addresses the specific challenges presented by lack of autonomy and academic freedom, pressures on faculty, the systemic problems of plagiarism, favoritism, and corruption as well as the cultural contradictions caused by importing ideas and techniques from the West. The foundation of the paper is a narrative about the traditional intertwining role of government and academia in China’s history, the major educational transitions and reforms of the 20th century, and the essential ingredients of a world-class institution. -

Horsley Date Department Chair ABSTRACT World wheat production is currently threated by stem rust (caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici) Ug99 race (TTKSK). The ongoing global effort to combat Ug99 is focusing on the identification and deployment of Ug99-resistant genes (Sr) into commercial cultivars. The objectives of this study were to identify TTKSK-effective Sr genes in untapped durum and common wheat germplasm and introgression of TTKSK-effective Sr genes from tetraploid wheat (Triticum turgidium) and Aegilops tauschii into hexaploids through production of synthetic hexaploid wheat (SHW). For identification of TTKSK-effective Sr genes, 177 durum and common wheat cultivars and lines were first evaluated using three highly virulent races TTKSK, TRTTF, and TTTTF and 71 cultivars and lines with TTKSK resistance were identified. The TTKSK-resistant cultivars and lines were then evaluated using six local races and the molecular markers that are diagnostic or tightly linked to the known TTKSK-effective Sr genes. -

Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2, 2013 © copyright by YOU GUO JIANG 2013 Conceptions about Liberal Arts Education in China Abstract Liberal arts education is an emerging phenomenon in China. However, under the pressure of exam-oriented education, memorization, and lecture pedagogy, faculty, university administrators and policy makers have not embraced it whole-heartedly. Through qualitative methodology, this study explores the current thinking of Chinese policy makers, university administrators, and faculty members on liberal arts education and its challenges. A study of the perceptions of 96 Chinese government and university administrators and faculty members regarding liberal arts education through document analysis and interviews at three universities helps in comprehending the process of an initiative in educational policy in contemporary Chinese universities. This research analyzes Chinese policy making at the institutional and national levels on curriculum reform with particular emphasis on the role of education in shaping well-rounded global citizens, and it examines how the revival of liberal arts education in China would produce college graduates with the creativity, critical thinking, moral reasoning, innovation and cognitive complexity needed for social advancement and personal integration in a global context. -

Teixeira da Silva2 Received: 11 March 2019 / Published online: 5 August 2019 © The Author(s) 2019 Abstract Citation-based metrics are frequently used to evaluate the level, or quality, of a researcher, or their work, often as a function of the ranking of the journal in which they publish, and broadly tend to be divided into journal-based metrics (JBMs) and author-based metrics (ABMs). Despite wide knowledge of the gaming of such metrics, in particular the Clari- vate Analytics journal impact factor (JIF), no suitable substitute concept has yet emerged, nor has any corrective measure been developed. In a post-publication peer review world of increasing retractions, and within a framework of open science, we propose correction fac- tors for JBMs and ABMs that take into account retractions. We describe ways to correct the JIF, CiteScore, the 5-year Impact Factor, Immediacy Index, Cited Half-Life, Raw Impact per Paper and other JBMs (Eigenfactor Score and Article Infuence Score) as well as the h-index, one of the most widespread ABMs, depending on the number of retractions for that journal or individual, respectively. The existence of such corrective factors could make the use of these metrics more transparent, and might allow them to be used in a world that is adapting to an increase in retractions and corrective measures to deal with erroneous scientifc literature. We caution that such correction factors should be used exclusively as such, and should not be viewed, or used, as punitive factors.
