Diocese of Richmond Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Come, Holy Spirit, and guide us throughout the Diocese of Richmond as we embark on our third century in Your service.
We humbly ask You to strengthen our trust in You and our eagerness to share the Gospel message with others.
Enkindle in us a keen desire to grow in our relationship with You and to encounter You in Your sacraments.
Through the intercession of Mary, Star of the New Evangelization, and St. Vincent de Paul, may we experience a new Pentecost and a profound renewal of faith in our diocese, our parishes, our families and in our hearts.
Amen

Glory to God from Mass of St. Mary Magdalene by Sarah Hart
The Liturgy of the Word
First Reading: A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy (4:32-34, 39-40)
Moses said to the people: “Ask now of the days of old, before your time, ever since God created man upon the earth; ask from one end of the sky to the other: Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of? Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live? Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, with strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors, all of which the Lord, your God, did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? This is why you must now know, and fix in your heart, that the Lord is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other. You must keep his statues and commandments that I enjoin on you today, that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you forever.”
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm 33:4-5, 6, 9, 18-19, 20, 22 Owen Alstott
1. Upright is the Lord, and all his works are trustworthy. He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the Lord the earth is full. 2. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made; by the breath of his mouth all their host. For he spoke, and it was made; he commanded, and it stood forth. 3. See, the eyes of the Lord are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness, to deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine. 4. Our soul waits for the Lord, who is our help and our shield. May your kindness, O Lord, be upon us who have put our hope in you.
Second Reading: A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans (8:14-17)
Brothers and sisters: Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Gospel Acclamation: Mass of St. Mary Magdalene by Sarah Hart
Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; to God who is, who was, and who is to come.
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 28:16-20
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them,. When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always until the end of the age.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Profession of Faith
The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (at the words that follow, up to and including “and became man,” all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that you are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if you were already there and I unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

Homily
My friends, don’t doubt or underestimate your ability to help others, to inspire others in ways we may not expect or anticipate, by merely doing what is right. That is the story of Barnabas.
One of 17 men and women identified in the NT as apostles, though not one of the original twelve, Barnabas humbly and quietly played a pivotal role in the very 1st group of believers.
During His public ministry, which lasted only 2.5-3 years, Jesus told His apostles and disciples to not yet take His message to Gentiles, to stay out of neighboring Samaria. Jesus repeatedly said that His mission was to Israel, to fulfill Judaism. After His resurrection, He tells His apostles and disciples to, “Stay here in the city until I return.” It’s too early to go out proclaiming His resurrection. The streets of Jerusalem are chaotic and dangerous.
Finally, on the cross, Jesus declared that, “It is finished!” He has done His job, accomplished His mission. Then, on His last day on earth when He ascends to heaven, Jesus tells His apostles and disciples, “Now take my Good News gospel to all nations, baptizing them in my name” … you just heard it at the very end of MT.
The apostles and disciples are anxious to take the gospel to the Gentile (non- Jewish) world, but they are debating what to tell Gentiles: must a Gentile first become a full-fledged Jew, undergo circumcision, and follow 613 daily Jewish rules in order to understand Jesus … or can Gentiles leap-frog over Judaism and instantly become Christians?? James says No; Peter vacillates.
At the same time, Saul/Paul undergoes his dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus to persecute Christians. Paul is on fire with Jesus and desperately wants to join the team in Jerusalem; but they will have none of it, no way! Barnabas steps forward and says, “You should hear Paul out. He just might be for real. Give him a chance.” They do … and history changes.
With Peter and James’ approval, Paul and Barnabas take young John Mark with them and sail west from Antioch Syria to the island of Cyprus. However, Paul grows impatient with John Mark and insists that Barnabas send him home. Barnabas, disagrees and takes John Mark under his wing. John Mark eventually matures and becomes MK, who writes the 1st gospel! Paul heads north to Asia Minor and takes Silas along with him.
So, quiet humble Barnabas is sponsor of Paul and mentor to Mark – two giant pillars of our faith. Take Barnabas out of the picture and who knows how it all may have played out?
From Ephesus, Paul writes his famous letter to the Romans. I encourage you to read chapter 11. Interestingly, Paul says that “all Jews will be saved” because, when those Jews in Jerusalem who remained skeptical about Jesus see how easily Gentiles come to believe in Jesus, they too will convert. Also, the one time Jesus snuck into Samaria and ministered to the woman at the well, Jesus told her that, “Salvation is from the Jews.”
For us today, there is some important theology that might surprise you. When we interact with our Jewish brothers and sisters, what should our goal be, should we try to convert them?
Our official Catholic teaching in Nostra Aetate (VAT II), our Catechism, and according to Emeritus Pope Benedict, we do not need to evangelize Jews … they already possess everything they need to know to understand Jesus. They just need to make the choice to believe. In our Catechism (Sections 839, 841), we share much in common with Jews and Muslims: we are all Children of Abraham, believe in the one and only God, People of the Book … all included in God’s Plan of Salvation. Amen.
