Simon Fraser University Library Burnaby, BC, Canada Last revision: Spring 09 ABSTRACT The ambiguous figure of Mary Magdalene first appears in the Christian Gospels—most importantly as a witness to the Resurrection—and subsequently in mystical writings of Gnostic origins. Her true relationship to Jesus, and to other women in the Gospels, has sparked controversy since the early days. This project examines these controversies in light of present-day debates about the role of women in the church. To that end I consider her role in contemporary popular culture, such as in Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code, and films such as Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. I then outline the early canonical and non-canonical writings in which she appears, and finally examine how contestants within the various faith traditions have framed her nature and role. Was she a reformed prostitute, or Jesus’s lover, or a female aspect of the Saviour himself, as the Gnostics seemed to claim? It emerges that the multifaceted image of the Magdalene has been used to send a variety of messages concerning gender, power, and the nature of redemption. I conclude that she is best considered as the female counterpart of Christ, and as such provides an inspiring example for women of our own day because of her simultaneous embrace of both worldly love and spiritual transcendence. I want this work to stand as a testimony to women and men who dare to love beyond cultural boundaries without fear of condemnation and lonely exile. More importantly, I want this work to inspire people to challenge the injustice, the silence, the gossip and the fear that keeps people in unloving, broken, or abusive relationships. But most of all, I want this work to inspire people to choose the better part, the part that allows them to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with their God. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Michael for agreeing to supervise my project. He was my very favourite undergraduate professor because he knew just the right question to ask me to keep me focused and to provide me with the structure I needed to begin any essay.     The Office of Woman in the New Testament GEORG GUNTER BLUM 1 Indications of services rendered by women in the life of Jesus THERE are no direct statements by either the earthly or the Risen Christ on the position of women in the Christian community. In spite of this, the question as to the attitude of Jesus to women is both justified and significant. Although there is no answer either in developed teaching or in single statements, yet certain conclusions can be drawn from particular situations in the life of Jesus. The influence of Jesus, by word and deed, was exercised on both men and women without distinction. The Gospels depict for us a series of encounters of our Lord with women, and we are shown emphatically that it was precisely the women who were honoured by his miracles and his revealing teaching. 1 But of greater importance is the fact that a small group of women lived constantly in the society of Jesus and followed him, just as did the disciples. Luke the Evangelist emphasises this fact, and refers to it in one of his summarised reports of Jesus's activity: 'And the twelve were with him, and certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others which minis­ tered unto him of their substance' (Luke 8:1-3). This report is not exclusive to Luke, nor is it according to a specially Lukan construction.

    JETS 54.3 (September 2011) 527–45 THE NAKED RUNAWAY AND THE ENROBED REPORTER OF MARK 14 AND 16: WHAT IS THE AUTHOR DOING WITH WHAT HE IS SAYING? !"#!$!% &'#'()**!* There is no question that Mark 14:51–52 is a major crux of Mark’s Gos- pel—the account of a “young man” +eeing naked from the scene as Jesus was arrested. 1 These verses are “a total enigma,” concluded Morna Hooker. A “bizarre episode,” said Eugene Boring. Francis Moloney called it a “strange passage.” “Confusing” and “unclear,” labeled Robert Stein. “[M]akes no sense as an actual incident,” claimed Robin Scroggs and Kent Gro,. “Whimsical,” declared John Knox. 2 This degree of interpretive chaos has resulted in an inordinate amount of speculation, inversely proportional to the evangelist’s reticence, as many a scholar and preacher has exercised upon this crux his or her own expository creativity. The reason for these hermeneutical acrobat- ics is obvious: if 14:51–52 is erased from the account—which apparently is what Matthew and Luke did in their respective Gospels (Matt 26:56–57; Luke 22:54)—what is left actually makes for a seamless reading of a coherent story. 3 But, as far as scholarship can tell us, those two verses remain in the canonical version and -nal form of the Gospel of Mark; and so, preachers have to make some sense of this perplexing text situated in this locus in Mark’s passion. If I have ever been teaching and felt like I needed to inject an audience with something, I just witnessed it. I mean they were tired, but they were troopers for coming out and being a part of the early service. I know that you guys are excited today because it is one of those days where we will just break our New Year commitments as we begin to go off the deep end. I mean we will be eating really well today, since it is Easter, and now we are hosed. It just goes awry from here on. So I hope you have a good Easter Sunday with good fellowship. And I hope that this morning you will sense something from God’s word that you can take away from the message that will be an encouragement to you. Let me start off with a story. Several years ago, I was serving as an associate pastor in Conway, Arkansas at Celebration Church. It was a new church, and I was there on staff. I came in one Sunday morning, and I saw my bride getting a cup of coffee. So I went up behind her and began to give her a massage on her shoulders. But then she turned around, and lo and behold, it wasn’t my wife! I was horrified in that moment. What made it even worse was she was a first time guest to our church and I never saw that lady again.

  • The Gospel According to Luke, Isaiah, and Origen
    Lumen et Vita 9:2 (2019), doi: 10.6017/lv.v9i2.11125 “To Evangelize the Poor:” The Gospel According to Luke, Isaiah, and Origen James E. Kelly Boston College School of Theology and Ministry (Brighton, MA) Abstract In this essay, I will examine the scriptural basis for Origen’s interpretation of Luke 4:18-19 as an allusion to Jesus’ identity as savior, not as a call to social justice. I argue that this interpretation is consistent with the intentions of the gospel writer. The essay begins with an analysis of the gospel writer’s redaction of Mark 1 in Luke 3-5. Based on that redaction, I hypothesize that Luke intends to emphasize Jesus’s identity with the anointed one mentioned in Isaiah 61:1-2. This excerpt from Isaiah not only gives Luke 4:18-19 its Christological significance but also clarifies Luke’s understanding of poverty in relation to the Gospel. I then examine Origen’s application of the Lucan passage for his pastoral purposes. To conclude, I suggest that we, like Luke and Origen, read Scripture Christocentrically in order to better facilitate the church’s encounter with Christ during the liturgy. Text If you want to see what it means to preach the Gospel, look at Jesus in the Nazareth synagogue. Within the Gospel of Luke,1 this occasion marks the first time Jesus preaches—and the first time he is rejected—during his public ministry. The other three evangelists don’t seem to remember it well. For Matthew and Mark, the rejection at Nazareth pales in comparison to the many miracles Jesus previously performed throughout Galilee; for John, this event goes unmentioned.2 What matters to Luke is the message Jesus preaches in the Nazareth synagogue, an excerpt from the book of the prophet Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, on account of which He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.

    The Magnificat Luke 1:46ff. December 22 & 23, 2012 Steve DeWitt For Christians this truly is a most wonderful time of the year. There are many reasons why our culture, in general, celebrates: being with family and friends . This is our first married Christmas and we will be spending time with my family in Des Moines and her family in Kansas City. For both of us, it’s the first time navigating Christmas with both sides of the family. I hope your time with your family is very blessed. Gift giving . Most of us like to give gifts and all of us like to receive them. Food . Vacation . There are lots of reasons for joy at this time of year no matter what your faith is or isn’t. But as Christians, there is a gladness we have because behind the cultural and sentimental celebrations of Christmas, there is something real and true and historical. Something happened that goes far beyond what silver bells, sleighs, and lights can symbolize. There is a story. A true story. A wonderful story. A story that the Bible says is remembered, not with presents and carols, but with faith. We remember by believing it is true and that the little baby in the manger was the Son of God. This has nothing to do with sentimentality but with truth and meaning and joy and wonder. We will get to that. Luke gives the most detailed account of the birth of Jesus. No surprise, Luke was a doctor. Doctors are scientists who study things in detail.

I was led to these Paths initially by a dream-vision on June 22, 2016, on the morning I was entering France from Italy, on my way to the Languedoc region in the SW, a part of France known for the beauty of its landscape, its rich history especially in Medieval times, its wine producing vineyards, olive groves, and sunflower fields, together with its alternative stories of MM and Jesus ‘after’ the crucifixion, its heretical Cathar ‘Holy Spirit’ movement from the 11th to 13th centuries for whom the Grail Chalice was a central symbol, and the stories and legends of the Holy Grail which sprung up in France and elsewhere during the 12th century. Since my dream, I’ve been on a journey to discover how I am being addressed by it, and what the relevance of the stories and traditions to which they relate might be for us today, in the Age of Transition to a new Aeon or myth.

    St Joseph as Dreamer and Disciple: The Gospels View By Arthur E. Zannoni Pre Note: On December 8, 2020, Pope Francis proclaimed in an Apostolic Letter entitled “Patris corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”) a “Year of Saint Joseph” from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021. Also, the Church celebrates the Solemnity (feast) of St. Joseph liturgically on March 19. Thus, the following reflection is offered on Joseph's biblical roots, the spouse of Mary, the mother of Jesus. What the Gospels Reveal About St. Joseph The only source we have for St. Joseph is the gospels. He is mentioned sixteen times in three of the four gospels. Matthew mentions him eight times, Luke seven times, and John once. This singular reference to Joseph in John's gospel (6:41-42) only refers to Joseph as the father of Jesus. The Portrayal of Joseph in the Gospel of Matthew In Matthew's gospel's infancy narrative, the first time Joseph is mentioned is in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-17), and he is called the husband of Mary (1:16). The second time Joseph is referred to as betrothed to Mary. They are engaged, “but before they lived together, she [Mary] was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit” (1:18). Mary and Joseph are between two stages of ancient Jewish marriage. The first is the formal consent in the home of the father of the bride. The second, made later, is the transfer of the bride to the house of the groom. In the Jewish legal view, Mary and Joseph's betrothal was considered a legally contracted marriage, completed before they cohabitated.
