  • 6Th South African Armoured Division
    6TH SOUTH AFRICAN ARMOURED DIVISION By J.C. von Winterbach, Scott Sutherland, Mike Bersiks, Rex Barret and Barry Cooper. Beginning The idea of a South African Armoured Division was born out of the chaos of the Western Desert Campaign, the Of- ficers in the 1st and 2nd South African Infantry Divisions felt the need for their own armour instead of depending on other Commonwealth Armoured Units. The formation of two strong Armoured Divisions was first discussed between Lt. Gen. G. E. Brink and rimeP Minister (Field Marshal) J.C. Smuts in April 1941. At that point time, South Africa was struggling to maintain the manpo- wer needed to sustain the 1st and 2nd Infantry Divisions in the field due to the political divisions in the Country. The 3rd South African Infantry Division was based in South Africa and provided the pool from which reinforcements were drawn to supplement the 1st and 2nd Infantry Divisions. A re-organisation committee met for the first time in May 1942 to discuss the armour option, it was decided to send three Infantry Battalions for armour training in August 1942, but the plan was rudely interrupted when Rommel launched his attack on the Gazala line in late May 1942. Nine days after the final El Alamein offensive the South African Divisions were pulling back to regroup. The plan was for the 1st Infantry Division that was withdrawn to Quassasin and that its 1st Brigade would return to South Africa to regroup with the 7th Infantry Brigade in Madagascar to form the 1st South African Armoured Division and the 1st Infantry Divisions 2nd and 3rd Brigades would remain in Egypt to form the 6th South African Armoured Division, which would replace the 2nd Infantry Division that had been captured at Tobruk in June 1942.

    Scientia Militaria, South African Journal of Military Studies, Vol 30, Nr 2, 2000. http://scientiamilitaria.journals.ac.za The Militarisation of South African White Society, 1948-1990 McGill Alexander Introduction The extent to which white South Africans were subjected to enforced militarisation, and indeed acquiesced to it, during the secom half of the twentieth century could be seen, at least in part, as contributing to the apparent reluctance of some whites to commit themselves to the democratising process in the country. In this paper the laying of the foundations for militarisation are outlined, the subsequent growth of this militarisation is examined and its possible effect on the transformation currently taking place in South Aliica is indicated. In doing so, the political actions of the National Party are considered, insofar as they succeeded in legislating military obligations on the white populace and utilising the Defence Force as a vehicle to impose the Aliikaner culture on all sectors of white society. This is seen in the context of growing black nationalist resistance and the international isolation of South Africa. The impact on white society of an increasing militaryburden and of direct involvement in repression of black resistance is considered as having a braking effect on the subsequent commitment by some whites to the democratising process in South Africa. The Post-War Ambience in South Africa At the end of the Second World War the white population of South Aliicafound itself in a polarised position which ostensibly was not in the least conducive to militarisation. The wartime supporters of the United Party coalition had come through six harrowing years of the war effort.

    Chapter 9 The SA Army: mandate, activities, main equipment and key personalities The SA Army was established just after midnight on the morning of April 27, 1994 as the senior Service of the new SA National Defence Force. Its seniority derives not as much from history but from the Defence Act, 42 of 2004, which in Section 12(1) lists the SA Army first, followed by the SA Air Force, SA Navy and the SA Military Health Service, thereby setting an order of precedence. For reasons of history and geography what is now the SA Army has always been the largest Service – and will remain that way. The geo-economics of the continent has always suggested to the Navy that South Africa has an island economy, with most of its trade with partners across the sea. As a result, they have always advocated the need for a strong navy. Understandable, of course – even though the Germans and Japanese excepted (the first during both world wars, the latter during the last) – there has never been a significant threat to that trade. For South Africa, the threat has always been on land – for successive colonial/white governments the “black peril”, for the present incumbents, the peril instability poses for development. What is the mandate of the SA Army? In many parts of the world, it has gained less popularity because of inaccurate geocoding methods and a lack of data standardization. Commercial services can also be expensive and as such, smaller businesses have been reluctant to make a financial commitment to spatial analytics. This thesis discusses the challenges specific to South Africa as well as the challenges inherent in bad address data. The main goal of this research is to highlight the potential error rates of geocoded user-captured address data and to provide a workflow that can be followed to reduce the error rate without intensive manual data cleansing.
