American Football Players in Finland: the Cultural Differences
American football players in Finland: The cultural differences Mikael Viljanen Bachelor’s thesis 2019 Summary Author Mikael Viljanen Degree programme Liiketalouden koulutusohjelma (Eng. Bachelors of Business Administrations) The title of the thesis Pages American football players in Finland: The cultural differences 43 + 33 The goal for this research was to discover and analyze the cultural differences between Finnish and American cultures, more specifically between Finnish and American athletes playing American football in Finland. This was done by interviewing American athletes who have played American football in Finland as professional import players. The interview the writer held was a qualitative open-ended question interview and was conducted to five American athletes who have played American football in Finland. The framework for this thesis is earlier cross-cultural research about Finland and United States. The writer uses the cultural dimension theories by cross-cultural researchers Geert Hofstede and Fons Trompenaars to research about the ways in which the two research groups could be culturally different. Despite Finnish and American culture are perceived quite similar to each other in the theo- retical framework of this thesis, this thesis did find out there is distinctive differences be- tween Finnish and American culture according to the research interviews. The cultural dif- ferences are mostly in the cultural dimensions of power distance, individualism, masculin- ity, specificness and affectiveness of the researched Finnish and American cultures. This thesis explains what each of these cultural dimensions stand for, as well as explaining the theory of cultural dimensions in general. An important background difference between the two research groups is that the game of American football is played very differently in Finland and in United States. -

The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by White Rose E-theses Online The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby Megan Geneva Murray PhD The University of York Women’s Studies January 2012 Abstract All-female roller derby is a rapidly growing full-contact sport played on quad roller skates, with a highly popularized punk, feminine, sexual and tough aesthetic. Utilising theories on the institution of heterosexuality, I conducted a qualitative study on all-female roller derby which evaluated the way in which derby aligns with or challenges heteronormativity. In order to approach this question, I analysed, firstly, thirty-eight interviews with spectators, and twelve with players about their interactions with spectators. Secondly, I interviewed twenty-six players about the phenomenon of “derby wives,” a term used to describe particular female friendships in roller derby. My findings relate the complex relationship between players and spectators by focusing on: (i) spectators’ interpretations of the dress, pseudonyms, and identities of players, as well as the ways in which they were actively involved in doing gender through their discussions of all-female, coed, and all-male roller derby; (ii) players’ descriptions of their interactions with spectators, family members, romantic partners, friends and strangers, regarding roller derby. Additionally, I address the reformulation of the role “wife” to meet the needs of female players within the community, and “derby wives” as an example of Adrienne Rich’s (1980) “lesbian continuum.” “Derby girls” are described as “super heroes” and “rock stars.” Their pseudonyms are believed to help them “transform” once they take to the track. -
A Norwegian Football League Perspective
sustainability Article Extraordinary Funding and a Financially Viable Football Industry—Friends or Foes? A Norwegian Football League Perspective Åse Jacobsen *, Morten Kringstad and Tor-Eirik Olsen NTNU Business School, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, 7491 Trondheim, Norway; [email protected] (M.K.); [email protected] (T.-E.O.) * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Financial distress has been frequently addressed in the sports business and management literature; however, surprisingly little attention has been devoted to implications for financial viability derived from funding beyond what the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) defines as relevant income in football, henceforth referred to as extraordinary funding. This study critically discusses and reflects upon whether extraordinary funding can contribute to financial viability. To address this issue, we draw on approximately 100 financial statements for Norwegian top division clubs and their cooperating companies for three fiscal years. Results indicate that, although extraor- dinary funding contributes with sorely needed funds, thus from the outset contributing in making clubs more robust, the manner in which extraordinary funding occurs is still of great importance from a viability perspective. In this respect, it is useful to distinguish clearly between ex ante and ex post funding. While ex post funding can be argued to be counter-productive to financial viability Citation: Jacobsen, Å.; Kringstad, M.; Olsen, T.-E. Extraordinary Funding (e.g., cloaking inadequate finances, providing incentives for overspending, and rewarding clubs that and a Financially Viable Football overspend), ex ante funding is more in line with sound financial management (e.g., funds that are Industry—Friends or Foes? Die Rückkehr Der Hamburg Blue Devils
Hamburg, 20.
