Post No & Title: T204 – T439 Refuse Driver/ Leader

Grade: Grade 5

Responsible to: T203 - Refuse Manager

Responsible for: T213-T437 Refuse Loaders/Loader Drivers.

Job Objective: Driving of a refuse freighter and the day to day supervision and work allocation for a team of refuse loaders.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Drive vehicles in accordance with licence requirements and the provisions of the Highway Code.

2. Complete driver log and any other records required by .

3. Check vehicle and related plant items daily before leaving the depot completing a nil defect report, i.e. oil, water, fuel, lights, tyres, brakes and other requirements including power mechanisms. Completing low level repairs such as bulb replacements.

4. Report all vehicle defects to the Refuse and Workshop Managers via the relevant sheet.

5. Manage and utilise the vehicle on board computer system (Bartec) to provide a single point of contact for information management relating to collection schedules, assisted collections and logging of missed/damaged bins.

6. Drive vehicle to the approved tip or refuse disposal location and discharge the load as directed.

7. Complete Drivers Hours weekly log/book.

8. Return vehicle to Depot on completion of day's work and park.

9. Cleanse vehicle daily.

10. Responsible for ensuring that loads are kept within legal limits.

11. Fill vehicle with adequate fuel at the end of the working day. 12. Supervise and be responsible for the health and safety of the team members ensuring that working practices are undertaken in accordance with the council’s procedures.

13. Collect sharps reported to team by the public as per provided. Report all incidents to the Refuse Manager, complete paperwork and dispose of needles through the stores function.

14. Keep appropriate records of streets and premises where bins are not collected due to not being out, contamination, wrong bin out, overfilled (lid up), heavy, access problems, defective or damaged bins or any other problems using the Bartec IT system.

15. When agency workers are assigned to provide additional supervision until they are familiar with the round/s.

16. Give loading staff occasional assistance with loading heavy bins.

17. Help and assist team members in the safe loading of bulk bins (1100 litre wheeled bins) where the team is a driver and one loader.

18. As required undertake other duties, either in the Refuse or Street Cleansing Sections to provide cover for which training will be provided.

19. Communicate with the public with regards to the Council’s recycling policies and procedures as and when applicable.

20. Promptly collect spilled refuse where bins are being emptied, preventing littering and road hazards.

21. Check the team allocated are all present, have the necessary personal protective equipment and receive necessary instructions.

22. Report to the Refuse Manager on the progress of the day's work.

23. Liaise with the Refuse Manager with regards to training requirements for operatives.

DESIGNATED CAR USER A designated car user status has not been attached to this post.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS In addition to the above the post holder will also be responsible for ensuring that: • All necessary paper work is carried out • All duties will be carried out in the working conditions normally inherent in the particular • All duties must be carried out to comply with; The Health & Safety at Work Act, other Acts of Parliament and any nationally or locally agreed Codes of Practice, which are relevant. • Duties will be carried out for jobs up to and including those in the same grade, provided such duties are within the competence of the employee • Some weekend work will be required.
