Xian Huang, who was accompanied by his mother Deyu Qu, said he grew up in China and then attended St Peters College in . He talked about future possibilities in science, such as having computer chips planted inside one’s brain, allowing a person to control for example an artificial limb. He also spoke about being inspired by Professor Barry Marshall, who together with Robin Warren, discovered spiral bacteria named Helicobacter pylori in the stomachs of almost all patients with active chronic gastritis, or duodenal or gastric ulcers, and proposed that the bacteria were an important factor in the aetiology of these diseases. Xian thanked the Club for sponsoring him and especially the support from Romaine and Chris Dawson.

Lucy Percival, a student at Wilderness School was with her mother Kylie. She also thanked the club for sponsoring her for such a valuable experience. She said she was fascinated by the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) program, especially the biology sciences and said that many future jobs and vocations don’t exist yet. As part of the NYSF program she visited Adelaide and Flinders Universities and the Waite Campus and was interested in how biology affected agriculture. She also enjoyed the fact that Dr Karl Kruszelnicki was part of the program.

Chris Dawson thanked the two guest speakers.

Guidance for Guest Speakers re Audio Visual Requirements

1. It is important for the Chairperson to advise the Guest Speaker of the Audio Visual conditions at The Kensi. 2. The distance between the lectern and the wall plugs mean that it may not be possible to use your own laptop on the lectern. There is often not sufficient time to adjust your own laptop to use the display at The Kensi as it has issues. 3. It is far safer for the Guest Speaker to bring the PowerPoint Presentation and/or video on a USB stick (formatted as FAT32 or ExFAT) and use the Club Laptop and the Club Remote from the lectern. This is a known combination that works. As the interface is via HDMI, videos can also be displayed. 4. It is also advisable to use 20 point or larger fonts in PowerPoint to ensure visibility. This particularly applies to the legends and scales on graphs.

Apologies Rod Carey, George Dimitriadis, Dennis Henschke, Anne Price.
