Guest Speaker Brian Kretschmer introduced James Stevens MP, Federal Member for Sturt. James commenced by saying how fortunate we have been to be in during the COVID-19 epidemic and how Australians have been so willing to sacrifice their lifestyles in order to keep everyone safe. He acknowledged the work that Rotary have done with the Polio Plus project which has all but eliminated this disease from the world and he hopes that this will help to encourage Australians to get vaccinated for COVID-19, the use of which has proved very safe. James said Australia has had time to take a cautious approach, by delaying the availability of the vaccines until all the medical checks have been done.

He said money needs to be spent on services rather than fees and administration.

Romaine Dawson spoke about how our club is supporting the Trinity Gardens school in the Pedal Prix.

Hi Romaine, I'm not sure what details you are looking for, but I can tell you there are 20 students from years 6/7 in the team and we train weekly. We will be racing on Friday 18 June in a 6 hour race 10am - 4pm (Pending covid testing on the track) at Victoria Park, Adelaide. Then on Saturday 31 July in a 12 hour race from 9am-9pm at The Bend, Tailem Bend and also on Saturday 11 September in a 6 hour race 10am-4pm at Sturt Reserve, Murray Bridge and Sunday 12 September in a 6 hour race 10am-4pm at Sturt Reserve, Murray Bridge. I hope this helps. The races are usually around a 3km or so track and we race in a category suited to Primary school. Thanks, Christine McCauley, (Trinity Gardens School)

The Music Awards night should go ahead on the 26th May and that the club is willing to support participants in the RYLA and RYPEN programs.

Phil Smith reported on the birthing kits assembly – HELD ON 25th FEBRUARY AT THE ROTARY SHED

Last Thursday evening a group of 15 Rotarians & partners met at the Rotary Shed to undertake the assembly of 200 birthing kits. This event was planned for earlier in the Rotary year but had to be rescheduled when it was shut down due to Covid 19 concerns.

On arrival at the shed participants had to wash their hands & glove up in preparation. The procedure for the birthing kit assembly was then explained by International Chair, Phil Smith. We used the production line method for our kit assembly. To enable the production to run smoothly two hundred birthing sheets had already been folded & inserted in their plastic bags. Also the strings had been cut & tied in groups of three.

The procedure was quite straight forward with each of the components (soap, gloves, gauze, scalpel & string) being added along the assembly line. The package was then rolled up & inserted in the plastic bag with the birthing sheet. The air was squeezed from the bag & it was then sealed. The completed birthing kits were then packed into two boxes, each containing 100 birthing kits. It was a very tight squeeze but Arthur & Lucy were determined to get them in. The two boxes were then sealed ready for collection.

The assembly of the kits took a little over an hour which we considered to be quite good. The assembly line method had worked well. It was lots of fun & judging by the chatter everyone really enjoyed the event. Hands on events are a great tonic for a Rotary Club.

Following the assembly a light supper was enjoyed by all. Thanks are extended to the Rotarians & partners who assisted in making this event a great success.

Phil Smith, Chair, International Committee.
