In doing so, he had caused alarm among his own people, the Aluku, who continued to regard whites with great suspicion. Over a period of several months, Crevaux and Apatu had penetrated rivers and forests that had yet to appear on European maps; by the time they arrived at the mouth of the Amazon River in Brazil, they had also cemented a friendship that was to bring them together for a number of other journeys over the next few years, a friendship that would last until Crevaux's death in 1882.2 By Crevaux's own account, Apatu had not only 1.

    THE JAMAICAN MARRONAGE, A SOCIAL PSEUDOMORPH: THE CASE OF THE ACCOMPONG MAROONS by ALICE ELIZABETH BALDWIN-JONES Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2011 8 2011 Alice Elizabeth Baldwin-Jones All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT THE JAMAICAN MARRONAGE, A SOCIAL PSEUDOMORPH: THE CASE OF THE ACCOMPONG MAROONS ALICE ELIZABETH BALDWIN-JONES Based on ethnography, oral history and archival research, this study examines the culture of the Accompong Maroons by focusing on the political, economic, social, religious and kinship institutions, foodways, and land history. This research demonstrates that like the South American Maroons, the Accompong Maroons differ in their ideology and symbolisms from the larger New World population. However, the Accompong Maroons have assimilated, accommodated and integrated into the state in every other aspect. As a consequence, the Accompong Maroons can only be considered maroons in name only. Today’s Accompong Maroons resemble any other rural peasant community in Jamaica. Grounded in historical analysis, the study also demonstrate that social stratification in Accompong Town results from unequal access to land and other resources, lack of economic infrastructure, and constraints on food marketeers and migration. Abstract This paper explores how processes of social transformation since the 1980s have impacted on mobility patterns and migration aspirations in Western French Guiana. The French state showed little interest in the development of this scarcely populated region until the arrival of refugees during Suriname’s War of the Interior (1986–1991), which triggered rapid population growth and pressed the state to provide services. With the expansion of formal education, young people’s life aspirations shifted away from rural economic activities and were increasingly mismatched with locally available opportunities. In line with mobility transition theories, these social transformations diversified and expanded mobility patterns: whereas grandparents relied on short-term circular mobility along the Maroni river to perform agricultural activities in the region’s interior, today’s young people engage in permanent rural-urban and overseas migration in order to access educational facilities and economic opportunities.

Just like a long natural road, it connects a wide variety of human types, landscapes and existential rhythms—all preserved in harmony with the water and vegetation. The Maroni River can be motored upstream on pirogue (dugout canoe) from Camp Dany Campou (located right near Apatou) and all the way up to Maripasoula. Numerous stops will allow you to keep in permanent touch with the local population. It can also be motored in the opposite direction, from Maripasoula down to Apatou.

Cette opération s'articule en une série de manifestations et d'actions (expositions, colloques, réalisations artistiques, publications...) échelonnéesa sur divers moments de l'année 1989 et réparties en différents lieux de la Guyane, significatifs par leur relation à l'histoire des Boni (Aluku). Cette opération se propose ainsi de les unir.dans leur évocation, afin d'en permettre une réappropriation profitable à toute la société guyanaise A partir de la deuxième moitié du 18ème siècle, en effet, un des groupes composant la société guyanaise d'aujourd'hui, les Boni ou Aluku, s'est distingué par l'intensité particulière avec laquelle il s'est opposé à l'oppression. II a fait preuve d'une vigueur et d'une intelligence exceptionnelles pour conquérir et garder sa liberté. Cette lutte, remarquable par son âpreté et sa complexité, a frappé les observateurs de l'époque. A diverses reprises, la tribu Aluku a été à deux doigts d'être anéantie. Mais par son habileté à utiliser les moindres possibilités du milieu, elle est parvenue, non seulement à survivre, mais à mettre un instant en question l'existence même de la société esclavagiste hollandaise du Surinam.

    AMERINDIA 40: 169-217, 2018 Dr. Crevaux’s Wayana-Carib Pidgin of the Guyanas: a grammatical sketch Peter BAKKER, Tobias GRETENKORT & Mikael PARKVALL Aarhus University/Rheinisch Westfälische Technische Hochschule & Aarhus University/Stockholm University Abstract: In this paper, we look at the notes gathered by the French medical doctor and explorer Jules Crevaux on the language he calls “Roucouyenne” and which is today known as Wayana or Oayana, a Cariban language spoken by between 500 and 900 people in Suriname French Guiana, and Brazil. We give some background information about Jules Crevaux and his notes on the Wayana Pidgin (which he believed to be Wayana proper). Then we give some information about Wayana Pidgin and Pidgin Carib in general, we compare some select properties with equivalents in the Wayana language. We identify some points of continuation between Crevaux and other sources of Carib Pidgin. Finally we provide some information about pidgin users and include some comments that other authors had on Crevaux’s materials, and we provide a grammatical sketch of his version of Carib Pidgin.1 Keywords: Wayana, Wayana-Carib pidgin, Cariban languages, Guyanas, Crevaux, grammar 1. Introduction The French medical doctor and explorer of South America Jules Crevaux gathered a number of vocabularies and sentences of Amerindian languages during his trips through South America in the 1870s and 1880s.
