What to make of natural history and natural philosophy?
As defined by the first edition of the Encyclopædia britannica (1771), natural history is “that science which not only gives compleat descriptions of natural productions in general, but also teaches the method of arranging them into classes, orders, and species. This definition includes botany, zoology, mineralogy, &c.”
In his four-volume textbook on “natural or experimental philosophy” (1803), Tiberius Cavallo held that “the business of natural philosophy, is to collect the history of the phenomena, viz. amongst the bodies of the universe; to investigate their causes and effects; and thence to deduce such natural laws, as may afterwards be applied to a variety of useful purposes.” Natural philosophy from the latter 17th century into the 19th was experimental at its core; and the works of natural philosophy shown here say much about discovery and demonstration in what we now learn as experimental physics.
We have paired natural history and natural philosophy in this exhibit in order to suggest the scope of investigations of nature in the early modern era. Topics illustrated include:
