........................................................................................................................ 133 iii OVERVIEW Feathers are the most phenotypically diverse (Prum and Brush, 2002; Stoddard and Prum, 2011) and structurally complex (Feo et al., 2015; Prum and Williamson, 2001) integumentary structures in vertebrates. They vary in size, shape, color, structure, and chemical composition between species, between locations on the body, and even within a single feather follicle across an individual’s lifetime (Lucas and Stettenheim, 1972). However, some feathers are morphologically conserved and show comparatively little variation across disparate taxa, individual lifespans, and evolutionary time. Remiges, the feathers that make up the majority of the surface area of a wing, are constrained and consequently morphologically stereotyped by the physical demands of flight. This morphological stereotyping by selection on flight ability has shaped the avian Bauplan since the Jurassic, and paleornithologists have used the presence of these specialized, asymmetrical feathers to define the origins of flight in the fossil record (Feduccia and Tordoff, 1979). In modern birds, this morphology is required for effective and efficient flight (Hedenström, 2003), and birds go to great lengths to compensate for, and recover from the impacts of a reduction in overall wing surface area caused by feather damage or loss (DesRochers et al., 2009; Echeverry-Galvis and Hau, 2013; Hedenström, 2003; Swaddle et al., 1996). In comparison, the feathers of the tail (the rectrices), which are also typically aerodynamically specialized and asymmetrical, are released from the constraints of locomotion by “hiding in the wake” of the flying bird (Askew, 2014; Clark, 2010; Clark and Dudley, 2009). This has allowed rectrices to evolve atypical and extreme morphologies dozens, if not hundreds of times (Clark and Dudley, 2009) that function as sexually selected visual signals (e.g. 1 widowbirds, Euplectes;

Here, we employed passive acoustic monitoring to study the vocal activity of the white-tipped dove (Leptotila verreauxi) at three sites over a year in the Brazilian Pantanal. The diel pattern of vocal activity showed a bimodal pattern, with significantly higher vocal activity after sunrise than during the other hours of the day, in agreement with prior studies on this species and other members of Columbidae. The species was vocally active throughout the year, but vocal activity was maximum during May-June and lowest during January-February. Relative air humidity was positively associated with vocal activity, which may be related to the improvement of sound transmission under more humid conditions, but it could also be related to foraging efficiency due to a higher availability of invertebrates on wetter days.

Columbina minuta is a species of ground-dwelling dove which measures 14.5-16.0cm long and weighs 26-42g (Soberanes-Gonzalez et al., 2010). It has reddish eyes, and dark grey and brown feathers, with the wings paler and with dark violet spots (Fig. 1) and mostly rufous (reddish) underwings. Tail feathers to the centre are grey-brown with the outer being very dark and narrowly tipped white. Pink legs. There is a distinction between males and females. Male: blue-grey nape and crown with bill being grey and tipped black. The neck, face, chest and belly areas are grey. Female: overall appear duller than males. Nape and crown are grey. Grey bill. Neck face and chest are pale grey with the area of the throat and belly being much paler. Juveniles display similar characteristics to females. This species may be confused with the ruddy ground dove Columbina talpacoti and the common ground dove Columbina passerina but there are distinctions, with the former being duller and not as rufous and the latter having a speckled neck and head. DISTRIBUTION. Although it has a very wide distribution, it is very discontinuous and occurs from the south of Mexico, through Central America to Colombia, over the north of South America onto Trinidad and the Guianas.

The individuals were, a female Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) with partial leucism, a female Ruddy Ground-Dove (Columbia talpacoti) with partial leucism and a young nestling of the same species, with albinism.     Lesser Sundas, Indonesia (Bali, Sumba, Timor, Flores and Komodo) 25th July – 12th August 2010 Leader: James Eaton Participants: Stefan Andersson, David Fisher, Simon Gawn, Lars Pettersen, Allan Richards, Richard Rowland, Jonas Starck Little Sumba Boobook, Sumba © James Eaton / Birdtour Asia The seldom-visited islands of the Lesser Sundas might produce a relatively small trip list of 246 species inside three weeks but this includes an impressive 68 endemics by exploring just four islands. Kicking off on Sumba we found all 12 island endemics with ease including both endemic boobooks, numerous Sumba Cockatoo and also Elegant Pitta and Chestnut-backed Thrush. Though many of Timor's endemics aren't quite so gaudy, Black-banded Flycatcher, Iris Lorikeet, Orange-banded Thrush and Timor Sparrow were all greatly admired. The long island of Flores proved the most exciting as Flores Monarch, Bare-throated Whistler, White-rumped Kingfisher and especially Flores Hawk Eagle showed exceptionally. The finale – a day trip to Komodo – lived up to expectations with a huge Komodo Dragon bounding towards us while Yellow-crested Cockatoo's screeched overhead. Elegant Pitta, Cinnamon-banded Kingfisher, Chestnut- backed and Chestnut-capped Thrushes and Black-backed Fruit Dove were just some of the other headliners. On top of all this, fine weather, tasty food and some interesting cultural diversions all added this to wonderful tour. As usual there were some twists to the tours, our first beginning immediately as our scheduled Merpati ‘Get the Feeling’ flight to Sumba was cancelled. Fortunately an earlier flight was available for us, although it meant our only birding on Bali was restricted to the hotel gardens and a small group of Java Sparrow, here relatively secure from the intense trapping for the cage-bird trade that has blighted the species throughout its native range.
