Deller after the Inspection. Reflecting on what I have reported over the past few years I find a wealth of change. ‘Change for the sake of change?’ you may well ask! No, I hope not. ‘Change for the better?’ you will ask . Well, let’s face it, Blenheim Camp was never built for comfort, so from this point of view the move to Bassingbourn is welcomed. As I said last May, ‘The Depot— The Queens Division Depot—looks like materialising but will require a decision in isolation’ It got one! R.A.F. (ex) Bassingboum is indeed a super barracks, four miles from Royston, but I am not about to describe it in detail. The Queens Division News Editor can jolly well do that in our next number. Suffice it to say that our Regimental recruit training organisation is leaving Bury and setting up at Bassingbourn, the process, so far as the Royal (By courtesy of East Anglian Daily Times) Anglian part of the Division is concerned, to be completed by 31st December this year. On Friday, 10th October, His Worship The Mayor of Bury St. Edmunds, Alderman A. F. S. Davies, took the salute at the Passing-Out Parade of the last platoons of recruits to be trained at Blenheim Camp. Choice of the Abbey Gardens for this parade was well made. For although it was Royal Anglians like myself from Blenheim who were on parade, it was the memory of soldiers from Suffolk who had trained in Gibraltar Barracks which was upper­ most in our minds and many of them were in the gardens to witness this farewell parade. The Colonel of the Regiment, himself of course a Suffolk, accompanied the Mayor. The Commanding Officer, Lt.-Col. Deller and the Parade Commander, Major Peat, also com­ missioned into The Suffolk Regiment, no doubt remembered Gibraltar Barracks’ erstwhile glory. Through these gates .. The red poppy of remembrance is familiar and altogether it provides employment under enough, but all too many people, even those sheltered conditions for some 1,500 disabled still serving in the Forces, know all too little men and women. There is a large rehabilitation about what it really symbolises. Poppy Day unit attached to the chest hospital at Preston does not merely signify a Day of Remembrance, Hall near Maidstone, where there is a thriving it is a symbol of continuing work for the village community. This village serves as a nation. Remembrance Day is not merely a model for such establishments throughout the nostalgic look back to the glories of war—far world, over 15,000 men having received treat­ from it.

    Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives King's College London The Papers 9f Brigadier Godfrey Pennington Hobbs, CBE (1907-1985) Introduction The papers of Brigadier Godfrey Hobbs, CBE, Order of the Phoenix of Greece with swords, Order of Restitution(Poland), were deposited by his son, Mr Richard Hobbs, in February 1986. The loose photos(l6)are copies of the originals which were loaned for this purpose. The papers have been arranged into three major sections corresponding to the divisions in Brigadier Hobbs' career. Section 1 (1-16) covers his service during the Second World War and subsequently in Greece, section 2 (17-25) his service as Military Attache, Athens and as Director of Public Relations during the Suez campaign, and section 3 (26-35) his service as Director of Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence. A final section (36-41) consists of papers of a personal nature. Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences iii Abstract DAVIS, ROBERT THOMAS II, Ph.D., August 2008, History The Dilemma of NATO Strategy, 1949-1968 (422 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Peter John Brobst This study is a reappraisal of the strategic dilemma of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the Cold War. This dilemma revolves around the problem of articulating a strategic concept for a military alliance in the nuclear era. NATO was born of a perceived need to defend Western Europe from a Soviet onslaught. It was an imperative of the early alliance to develop a military strategy and force posture to defend Western Europe should such a war break out. It was not long after the first iteration of strategy took shape than the imperative for a military defense of Europe receded under the looming threat of thermonuclear war. The advent of thermonuclear arsenals in both the United States and Soviet Union brought with it the potential destruction of civilization should war break out. This realization made statesmen on both sides of the Iron Curtain undergo what has been referred to as an ongoing process of nuclear learning.

Carver All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT 2 Dr. Douglas Forsyth, Advisor This historical investigation of U.S.-Turkish relations from the end of World War II to 1964 provides a greater understanding of the challenges inherent in the formation and implementation of U.S. policy in Turkey at a time when the Turks embarked on multiparty politics and a determined campaign to become a modern and distinctly European nation through ambitious economic development programs. Washington proved instrumental in this endeavor, providing financial support through the Marshall Plan and subsequent aid programs, and political sponsorship of Turkey’s membership in international organizations such as NATO and the EEC. U.S. policymakers encountered various quandaries as they forged bilateral relations with the Turks, specifically reconciling democratization with Turkey’s development and participation in the containment of communism. The Turkish government under Adnan Menderes demonstrated its reliability as a U.S. ally, providing troops to fight in the Korean War and cooperating in the construction of NATO bases and the modernization of its military, but it came under increasing pressure from the political opposition when its economic policies failed to secure long-term economic growth and stability. Starting in the mid-1950s the Menderes government adopted increasingly authoritarian measures to control dissent, a problematic situation for Washington, as it desired greater Turkish democracy while at them same time did not wish to compromise the growing American military presence in Turkey.
