THE HISTORY OF LIONS INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 19 I, THE FAMILY OF LIONS CLUBS OF ISLAND AND THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA, AND HOW THEY WERE STARTED.

HISTORY OF LIONS CLUBS IN 19 I The concept of Lionism was created and structured in 1917 at its first Convention in Dallas, Texas, after being started in Chicago by a group of businessmen led by Melvin Jones. With the object of "providing a service to others for the betterment of humanity, rather than self-serving business pursuits" our Association prospered and grew into the largest Service Club Organization in the World. LIONS – Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations Safety" – Our Motto – "We Serve"; Our Colours – PURPLE and GOLD - indicating Loyalty to One's Own Country and One's Self and Sincerity of Purpose. Our Organization took but 3 years to become International and has continued to expand throughout the World.

Lionism expanded rapidly, reaching our North West in 1920 when both Seattle and Everett Clubs were chartered. Somehow or other the Everett Club, chartered in May, was sponsored by Seattle, who is recorded as being chartered later. Initially, the U.S. was divided into Districts for organizational and administrative purposes, being numbered from West to East. The first Governor in District One (West Coast) was from Oakland CA. Changes were rapid as Clubs formed. , with Nevada, reorganized and became District Four. Meanwhile in 1921, new Clubs were chartered in Vancouver BC, Portland OR and Tacoma WA. Provisional District status was given pending the establishment of 8 Clubs. In 1922 Spokane & Wenatchee (Mar), Bellingham (Oct) and Yakima (Dec) chartered, followed by Longview Pioneer in 1923. At the 1922 Conference held in Everett, Ray Bigalow (Seattle) was elected Governor and the first District Convention scheduled for May 1923. At the Association Convention later in 1922, however, Ray was elected International’s Third Vice President, so Provisional District 19 needed to elect a new Governor. By our 1923 Convention we had our 8 Clubs with 465 Lions and District 19 came into being..

Rapid growth continued: Oregon separated in 1925, becoming District 36; District 19 recorded 30 Clubs with 1,287 members in 1936 and had gained Northern Idaho; District organization included appointed Deputy District Governors and in some cases Zone Chairmen. In 1939, we had 55 Clubs divided into 5 Regions with Deputy District Governors each with 3 Zones led by elected Chairmen.

In 1941, Twenty years later, the Vancouver Kitsilano Club (now Vancouver Burrard) brought Lionism to when they chartered the Victoria Club on Apr 12, 1941. Lion Jos Chanter, a member now living in Victoria, transferred and became the Charter President. Six months later, Victoria organized a Club in Ladysmith. Across the straits, Bremerton Lions introduced Lionism to Port Angeles by chartering a Club on 24 Sep 1942. Our future was established.

This booklet details the History of those Clubs that now form District 19 I and, in some cases, those Clubs that played a part in the growth of Lionism in the North West. While it is realized that many Lions played a major role in the building of successful Lions Clubs and/or the completion of hundreds of successful Lions Activities, it is not possible to name them all. Consequently, this history has recorded only those Lions who were Charter Presidents and District Officers.

I would like to thank the many Lions who have complied with my requests for data; assisted in the production of this booklet, and who have helped in so many ways. Your help has made it possible to produce this statistical record. Loose-leaf format has been used so that each year the record may be updated as we continue to grow and continue " TO AID my fellow men & women by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy" C.R. (Rob) MANIFOLD PDG
