The fires displaced nearly one million residents, destroyed thousands of homes, and sadly took the lives of 10 people. Shortly after the fire siege began, a team was commissioned by CAL FIRE, the U.S. Forest Service and OES to gather data and measure the response from the numerous fire agencies involved. This report is the result of the team’s efforts and is based upon the best available information and all known facts that have been accumulated. In addition to outlining the fire conditions leading up to the 2007 siege, this report presents statistics —including availability of firefighting resources, acreage engaged, and weather conditions—alongside the strategies that were employed by fire commanders to create a complete day-by-day account of the firefighting effort. The ability to protect the lives, property, and natural resources of the residents of California is contingent upon the strength of cooperation and coordination among federal, state and local firefighting agencies. -

Communication Monographs Vol. 74, No. 4, December 2007, pp. 415442 The Story Behind an Organizational List: A Genealogy of Wildland Firefighters’ 10 Standard Fire Orders Jennifer A. Ziegler To invigorate research on the dialectic between lists and stories in communication, this study recommends adding context back to text by focusing on the enduring problems these forms are summoned to solve. A genealogy of one significant organizational list, wildland firefighters’ 10 Standard Fire Orders, shows how a list’s meaning resides less on its face and more in the discourses surrounding it, which can change over time. Vestiges of old meanings and unrelated cultural functions heaped upon a list can lead to conflicts, and can make the list difficult to scrap even when rendered obsolete for its intended purpose. Reconciling these layers of meanings and functions is thus not a technical problem but rather a rhetorical one. Implications for communication research are addressed. May 2006 Tourism Labour Market Demand Analysis for the Sea-to-Sky Region May 2006 TOURISM LABOUR MARKET DEMAND ANALYSIS FOR THE SEA-TO-SKY REGION REPORT ON FINDINGS Highlights ¾ The current shortfall of workers for the tourism labour market in Whistler is conservatively estimated at 3,500. This number does not fully account for the major seasonal differences and could well be higher for the peak season. The actual number of workers required to make up this shortfall would be significantly higher than 3,500 because of part-time, part-year and seasonal jobs. ¾ Currently many people living in the Squamish-Lillooet area work in Whistler so the 3,500 is a measure of shortage that is beyond the current workforce capacity of the whole Squamish-Lillooet area. The 3,500 plus some additional demand for the peak season has typically been filled by recruitment of workers from elsewhere, in BC, Canada and overseas. ¾ Growth in the four key tourism related industries of accommodation, food and beverage services, recreation and retail trade, is expected to add an additional 2,500 jobs in tourism related activity over the ten years to 2015. ¾ While the majority of the new jobs are expected to be in Whistler, the growth rate for tourism jobs in the surrounding area is projected as being slightly higher than for Whistler itself. ¾ Population growth in the Squamish-Lillooet area, already a little higher than for BC, is expected to see this trend continue. -

Hearing from UBCM directly on some of its key interests and issues was very much appreciated. As Minister Osborne and President Frenkel said during the calls, these calls continue to be a great opportunity to hear from you about the key issues and opportunities you are working on in your communities for 2021 (in addition to COVID-19). There were a number of themes that came up during the calls including connectivity, reopening of BC parks in the spring and roll out of vaccine distribution. This email sets out links and resources on some of the topics raised. As well, on specific issues such as grant applications or questions particular to your community, please remember that your staff can reach out to Ministry of Municipal Affairs staff for assistance (see the Local Government Division staff finder for the appropriate staff person for your area). COVID-19 update The state of emergency is extended to March 2, allowing health and emergency management officials to continue to use extraordinary powers under the Emergency Program Act. On February 5th, Minister Dix and Dr. Henry announced that the province-wide restrictions, put in place to significantly reduce COVID-19 transmission related to social interactions and travel, would continue until further notice based on direction from the PHO. -
