Op het Kasteel, bij het gemeentehuis in Coevorden2, staat een (klein) beeldje van deze drie podagristen, als wandelaars, want hun reisboek beschrijft een tocht te voet door Drenthe waarbij zij eerst naar Bentheim gaan om bij de bronnen genezing te vinden voor hun kwaal. De drie wandelaars waren Lesturgeon, Boom en de uitgever van der Scheer. Hun namen zijn vrijwel vergeten, evenals hun ongemak dat in de negentiende eeuw nogal eens in de literatuur opduikt; podagra: een soort ontsteking in voet en been welke bij te grote liefhebbers van zware Bourgogne scheen voor te komen en wel schertsend ‘het pootje’ werd genoemd. Dirk Martens, uitgever te Aalst, leed hier ook aan en wel in zulke mate dat hij meende reeds op zijn sterfbed te liggen in het vroege najaar van 1527. Zijn liefste wens ging toen echter in vervulling, namelijk dat zijn auteur Erasmus een grafschrift voor hem schreef. In grote wijsheid en vooral hoop op een langer leven van zijn vriend, formuleerde Erasmus in de vierde regel: ‘octauam vegetus praeterii decadem...’,3 wat neerkomt op: ‘ik heb in goede gezondheid het achtste tiental jaren van mijn leven voorbij zien gaan...’.

De Nes De twee oude huizen op bovenstaande foto stonden in de Nes en op de hoek met de Grimburgwal. Tegenwoordig staat er een modern pand waarin een optiek is gevestigd. De Grimburgwal was oorspronkelijk een zijarm van de Amstel, de Grim, wat “modderige sloot” betekent. De buurt rond de gracht werd Grimmenes genoemd. In 1546 werd de Grimnessesluis aangelegd, in het verlengde van de Nes, om de Grimburgwal te kunnen afsluiten van de Amstel. Deze sluis bleef bestaan tot hij in 1868 werd gesloopt. Maar nu de Nes. Dit is een van de oudste straten van Amsterdam. Rond 1400 werden er op de langwerpige drassige landtong, in het Middelnederlands een nesse (neus) genaamd, vanwege de goedkope grond vooral kloosters gebouwd. De Nes is een smalle straat, even- wijdig aan het Rokin tussen de Dam en de Grimburgwal. Tot in de zeventiende eeuw noemde men het noordelijk deel Gansoord. Aan het eind van de middeleeuwen telde Amsterdam ongeveer twin- tig kloosters, waarvan vijf in het laatste stukje van de Nes. De namen van de stegen die uitkomen op de Nes verwijzen hier nog steeds naar. Tegenwoordig is er nog een steeg met de naam Gebed zonder End en ook zijn er de Sint Barberensteeg en de Cellebroerssteeg. Na de Alteratie van 1578 kregen de kloostercomplexen andere functies. Zo ontstond hier onder meer het Binnengasthuis op de plaats van het Oude en Nieuwe Nonnenklooster. Al in de 19e eeuw was de Nes een uitgaanscentrum.

From Den Haag – Rotterdam – Schiphol (A4) At the end of the A4 take the exit A10 west direction Centrum / Zaandam. Take exit IJmuiden and merge to transformatorweg/S102 to the Centre (3.1 km). Follow the road to Westerkeersluisbrug/S100 (1.2 km). Before the bridge turn right at the traffic lights onto the Houtmankade. Then turn left at the first traffic onto William Bridge and then left again at the first traffic light upon the Haarlemmertuinenstraat. Then take the first traffic light right and keep going straight towards to the Prins Hendrikkade. At the sixth traffic light turn left onto the bridge to the Oosterdokskade. Take the first right. After 200 meters you come to the main entrance of the DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station.

Met de intentie relaties van ons bedrijf bij elkaar te brengen met als toegevoegde waarde de mogelijkheid vakgenoten van elkaar te laten leren. Leren en genieten van de ervaring van toppers. Koos van Noort van het Steigenberger Kurhaus kwam met deze suggestie en we hebben naar hem geluisterd. Dat is een succes geworden. We vonden enthousiaste topkoks die masterclasses wilden geven aan hun collega’s. En gerechten bereiden die ter plekke konden worden geproefd: niet aan keurig gedekte tafels maar informeel rond de kachel. In de keuken dus, de plek waar alle deelnemers zich ’t best op hun gemak voelen. Of, zoals wij bij Schmidt graag zeggen, als een vis in het water. Cees Helder was bereid de eerste masterclass op zich te nemen en daar waren we natuurlijk trots op. In zijn kielzog volgden toppers als Pascal Jalhaij, Erik van Loo, Jonnie Boer, Hans van Wolde, Cas Spijkers, Herman den Blijker, Ron Blaauw, Imko 6 Binnerts, Lucas Rive en drie aanstormende talenten als Luc Kusters, François Geurds 7 en Jeroen Bavelaar die een inkijkje gaven in de ‘moleculaire’ mogelijkheden.
