De pilot aanpak verkeersoverlast Oudezijde bestaat uit een pakket maatregelen in het Oudezijdegebied (gebied tussen Damrak – Prins Hendrikkade – Oudeschans – Amstel) om de verkeersoverlast op de uitgaansavonden terug te dringen. De maatregelen zijn: · Alleen nog toegang voor ontheffinghouders op donderdagavond, vrijdagavond en zaterdagavond tussen 22.00u en 06.00u (verder “de venstertijden“) . · Voor toegang tot de route Nieuwmarkt – Geldersekade geldt: · Bewoners, ondernemers en TTO taxi’s zijn ontheffinghouders. · Via de verzinkbare paal bij ofwel de Nieuwmarkt of Rusland kan een ontheffinghouder toegang krijgen. · Ontheffinghouders worden zoveel mogelijk automatisch ontheffing gegeven aan de hand van kentekenherkenning. Bijvoorbeeld aan de hand van bestaande parkeervergunningen. Voor bewoners en ondernemers zonder vast kenteken wordt maatwerk geleverd om toegang te verlenen. Dit kan zijn met behulp van een toegangspas of een toegangscode. Hier worden de bewoners en ondernemers nog over geïnformeerd. · Verder wordt tijdens de venstertijden op de volgende locaties handmatig bediende palen omhoog gezet om tegen te gaan dat er rondjes in het gebied worden gereden: o Bantammerbrug direct ten westen en direct ten oosten van de aansluiting met de Geldersekade (oost en west); o Oude Waal direct ten zuiden van de aansluiting met de Binnen Bantammerstraat; o Oude Schans direct ten oosten van de aansluiting met de Oude Waal en direct ten zuiden van de aansluiting met de Binnenkant. o Nieuwmarkt direct ten westen van de aansluiting met de Geldersekade; o Koningsstraat direct ten westen van de aansluiting met de Krom Boomssloot; o Keizersbrug ten zuiden van de aansluiting met de Oude Schans; o Snoekjessteeg direct ten oosten van de aansluiting met de Sint Antoniesbreestraat; o Kloveniersburgwal direct ten noorden van de aansluiting met de Zandstraat. -

De Nes De twee oude huizen op bovenstaande foto stonden in de Nes en op de hoek met de Grimburgwal. Tegenwoordig staat er een modern pand waarin een optiek is gevestigd. De Grimburgwal was oorspronkelijk een zijarm van de Amstel, de Grim, wat “modderige sloot” betekent. De buurt rond de gracht werd Grimmenes genoemd. In 1546 werd de Grimnessesluis aangelegd, in het verlengde van de Nes, om de Grimburgwal te kunnen afsluiten van de Amstel. Deze sluis bleef bestaan tot hij in 1868 werd gesloopt. Maar nu de Nes. Dit is een van de oudste straten van Amsterdam. Rond 1400 werden er op de langwerpige drassige landtong, in het Middelnederlands een nesse (neus) genaamd, vanwege de goedkope grond vooral kloosters gebouwd. De Nes is een smalle straat, even- wijdig aan het Rokin tussen de Dam en de Grimburgwal. Tot in de zeventiende eeuw noemde men het noordelijk deel Gansoord. Aan het eind van de middeleeuwen telde Amsterdam ongeveer twin- tig kloosters, waarvan vijf in het laatste stukje van de Nes. De namen van de stegen die uitkomen op de Nes verwijzen hier nog steeds naar. Tegenwoordig is er nog een steeg met de naam Gebed zonder End en ook zijn er de Sint Barberensteeg en de Cellebroerssteeg. Na de Alteratie van 1578 kregen de kloostercomplexen andere functies. Zo ontstond hier onder meer het Binnengasthuis op de plaats van het Oude en Nieuwe Nonnenklooster. Al in de 19e eeuw was de Nes een uitgaanscentrum. -

PRESS FEATURE: USA IN AMSTERDAM The United States in Amsterdam Amsterdam has very old links with the United States of America. In 1780, John Adams opened the first American embassy in the world in Amsterdam. However, the first contacts with Amsterdam were actually much older. In 1609, Henry Hudson left Amsterdam’s Schreierstoren in his ship De Halve Maen. After a long journey, he reached the island of Manhattan where he founded Nieuw Amsterdam, which later became New York City. It is, therefore, not surprising that some New Yorkers have a feeling of déjà vu when they visit Amsterdam. Many street names and neighbourhoods in New York – such as Broadway (Bredestraat), Brooklyn (Breukelen), Harlem (Haarlem), Coney Island (Konijneneiland), the Bowery (Boerderij), Wall Street (Walstraat) and Canal Street (Kanaalstraat) – recall the old Dutch names of Nieuw Amsterdam. This is also true for words such as dollar (daalder), waffle (wafel), candy (kandij), cookie, (koekje), boss (baas) and coleslaw (koolsla). The best example is of course the word “Yankee”, which is a corruption of the traditional Dutch first name Jan-Kees. Pilgrim Fathers There are still many traces in Amsterdam of the people who founded New York and many other “colonies” in America. One example is the West India House, where the West India Company gave the order to found Nieuw Amsterdam and where Peter Stuyvesant was appointed governor of Nieuw Amsterdam. The oldest portrayal of what is now New York is on display in Amsterdam’s Scheepvaartmuseum (National Maritime Museum), and the church of the Pilgrim Fathers can be found in the Begijnhof. -

PRESS FEATURE: CULINARY The city for connoisseurs Amsterdam is, without doubt, the most culinary city in the Netherlands, not so much in terms of quantity – although there are more than 1,300 restaurants – but particularly in terms of quality. Amsterdam (and Amstelveen included) now has 21 Michelin stars. Many other kitchens come very close to one-star quality, and all kinds of ambitious chefs are eager to build on the star ratings. Key words in this case are “quality”, “originality” and “local”, with as many local products as possible coming from Dutch soil. In addition, several culinary events in Amsterdam take place throughout the year in which Amsterdammers (citizens of Amsterdam) and visitors get the chance to sample all kinds of new bites. In recent years, the art of cooking has undergone a spectacular development in the Netherlands. It has also started to dawn on foreign connoisseurs that the Dutch kitchen has more to offer than hutspot (mashed potatoes, carrots and onions), pancakes and pea soup so thick that the spoon remains upright. The Calvinistic Dutch have slowly emerged as true gastronomes. Good food and restaurant experiences are among the favourite topics of discussion, especially among cosmopolitan citizens of Amsterdam. Illustrative of this trend is the number of starred restaurants in the Michelin Guide. Starred restaurants From one to twenty-one star in 60 years. In 1982, Amsterdam had only one restaurant with a Michelin star; today, there are four restaurants with two stars and eleven with one star, placing Amsterdam head and shoulders above other Dutch cities and earning it consideration internationally.
