Season of Creation 2020 ➢ 1 September – 4 October

Peace to Our Earth

Peace to this earth This gift of creation, Which we celebrate With joy and with reverence.

In the spirit of the first Francis, May we take time to see The radiance of creation, This gift of light and liquid And green growth.

Peace to this earth; May we practice nonviolence Toward our lakes, rivers and seas. May we renew the living waters Teeming with life, small and large. May clean waters quench our deep thirst.

Peace to this earth; May we practice nonviolence Toward the land, the very ground of life; May we restore the soil So its richness can give us plentiful food. May we all be nourished by the fruits of the earth.

Peace to this earth; May we practice nonviolence Toward air, sky, clouds. So we can breathe freely in gentle rain. May the natural world be a safe home for all.

Peace to this earth, We pray with our pope, Peace to creation, Which we celebrate With joy and reverence, Knowing we hold a fragile world In our hands.

Principal

We have arrived at the end of Term 3, a term that proved to be more challenging than Term 2 (and we did not believe it could become more difficult than what we experienced then!).

Firstly, I thank our wonderful students for their commitment to their learning as we encountered our second phase of home based learning. It is pleasing to hear from our teachers about the positive approach taken by our students in meeting the demands of their learning programs. Our students made the very best of a very challenging situation and I congratulate all on remaining engaged and positive in their learning.

Secondly, I acknowledge and thank our teachers for their commitment to ensuring our excellent learning program was maintained. All those important elements of the student/teacher relationship were sustained and strengthened throughout the term. The optimistic approach of our exemplary staff and the confident response from our students facilitated great progress and learning.

Thirdly, I thank our parents and carers for the support given to their daughters, the staff and the College community as a whole. The value and importance of our partnership in the education of the young women of Sacred Heart was certainly evident throughout the term. Thank you to our parents and carers for providing the necessary support at home to enable ongoing growth and development of our young women.

It was a challenging term, yet one that we can be immensely proud of when we see what was achieved. As well as covering the prescribed learning programs many other benefits have been evident. Personal skills of self-discipline, planning and organisation, resilience, independence, resourcefulness, flexibility, adaptability, all developed and will continue to develop. These capabilities are so very valuable for an enriching future. Yes, many things were lost, yet some wonderful gains are so very evident.

As we know, we have yet to come out the other side of this pandemic. It is reassuring to know that the pathway to the future is looking much more positive.

Arrangements for the beginning of Term 4 were presented in the letter to the community in the last week of Term 3.

A quick recap:

Monday, 5 October, Term 4 begins. Home based learning recommences for all students.

Wednesday, 7 October GAT (onsite) for all students undertaking Unit 3/4 studies

Monday, 12 October VCE students (Year 11 and 12 and Year 10 undertaking a VCE Unit 2 study other than Religion and Society) resume onsite classes.

Year 10 students undertaking a VCE Unit 2 study will attend classes at Sacred Heart only on the days of their VCE class. Their Year 10 classes will be supervised onsite and be taken remotely.

Home based learning continues for students in Years 7-10.

At this stage, there is no clear indication on the recommencement of onsite classes for Year 7-10 students. An announcement will be made upon the guidance of the health authorities in line with government directions.

Lessons from HBL

The end of Term 3 is upon us and what a very different term it has been. Despite the current challenges posed by COVID-19 over this time, our students should all be proud of their achievements over this term. These achievements include not only those regarding their academic learning but also all the “other” learning that has happened as part of home-based learning. They have proven themselves to be adaptable and resourceful; they have demonstrated perseverance and resilience; they have experienced collaboration and communication in a virtual environment; and they have become much more tech savvy in terms of video conferencing, online assessments, troubleshooting issues, working with new platforms etc. And this is only the tip of iceberg.

How our young women view themselves as learners, can only be enriched by these types of achievements and it is important that we all acknowledge and appreciate all the other learning that has happened over this term. Over the holidays it would be great if you and your daughters spent some time reflecting on and sharing these learnings, recognising that these sometimes called “soft skills” are as valuable, if not more so, than a number on a test. That these are the skills and dispositions they will be required to draw upon into the future and as such their achievements in this area over the term are worthy of celebration.

Reminder: Thanks to all of you who have already completed our online survey regarding online events this term. You still have time if have not already done so. This link Virtual Events Parent Feedback will take you directly to the survey which closes on Friday, 25 September.
