Compiled Collection of ‘Chapmanslade News & Information’ Emails

Published by Terry Rose Starting December 2019

Please note that emails are presented in date order, starting with the earliest, so the latest emails sent out can be found at the end of the document

This document was last updated: June 8, 2020

INTRODUCTION The intent of this compilation of emails is to ‘capture’ and document the goings-on in the West Village of Chapmanslade over the course of a year that covers the strange and troubling times brought about by the Coronavirus, COVID 19, pandemic. This ‘community diary’ opens a window into how the pandemic has affected, and is still affecting, village life and how villagers and village organisations and groups are reacting to the situation.

‘Chapmanslade Information’ emails are sent, at people’s request, to a blind distribution list of around 90 parishioners (out of a total parish population of about 650) to help keep them informed, initially of social events and Parish Council information, then as 2019 moved into 2020 when the country quickly moved into a lockdown situation, the main aim of these emails changed to be more about imparting important information regarding how to stay safe and how to access local help and support from village organisations – including those set up specifically in response to the pandemic - such as the Chapmanslade Coronavirus Action Group (COV-AG).

Those on the email distribution list do have access to the internet, but may or may not use social media - such as the private ‘Chapmanslade Village Community Facebook Group’, which at the beginning of 2020 had 392 members; rising to 474 at the last time of writing – probably as a result of ‘the times’. It is believed that the village Facebook group reaches into most households in the village plus the wider ‘Chapmanslade community’ because couples and families are known to share one login account (my wife and I included).

Sending these emails is just one strand of ‘keeping villagers informed’ – the others being the Facebook Group, the village website (which I also edit) and the Bridge, a monthly magazine which until the March 2020 edition, was hand delivered to all households in the villages of and Chapmanslade, but as of the time of writing continues to be available only online at http://corsleyandthebridge.co.uk/archive.html. The challenge is to keep all these strains joined-up and in sync.

It is intended that emails will continue to be added to this document as they are published up to and including December 2020.

Chapmanslade News & Information Emails

From: Phil & Joyce Jefferson Advertising village events – 1 December 2019

Dear all,

As you may know, Joyce and I will be moving from Chapmanslade very shortly; in fact we move this Thursday. We've had a great 20 years in the village but it's time for us to start another chapter in our lives in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, where we will be near our family.

I'm pleased to let you know that Terry Rose has agreed to take on my role of advertising village events, including parish council meetings, which I hope you've found to be a useful service. If you are happy for him to contact you by email from time to time you do not need to take any action. However, if you no longer wish to receive these messages, please let me know as soon as possible and I will arrange for your contact details to be deleted from the list.

With all best wishes.

Community Coffee Morning – 19 Dec, 2019 Good morning,

Late reminder. It’s not too late to come along this morning for a cup of Ben’s coffee and a chat at the Three Horseshoes, anytime between 10.00am and Noon. Last Coffee Morning of the year so do come along if you have an hour or so to spare.

And you can find the remaining Christmas Church events/services in the latest edition of The Bridge, which you may wish to attend.

Finally, thanks to Rotary (including Chapmanslade contingent) for sending Santa to the village last night in such dreadful weather. Santa (Ian Buick?) must have got very, very wet.

Have a Merry Christmas,

Terry

BEWARE Courier Fraud – 15 Jan 2020 Dear all,

Chapmanslade Parish Council wants us all to be aware of an increased risk of COURIER FRAUD.

Warminster Police has advised the PC that HM Government has directed a step-up in the National Law Enforcement response to fraud over the next 12 months. Operation Radium is the first of four campaigns, which relates specifically to courier fraud.

Our local PCSO, Candida Jackson, says "Courier Fraud has seen a massive increase recently and so we must all be on our guard to ensure we take steps to reduce this happening and be aware of how these incidents are happening. Please read the attached leaflet which gives guidance about courier fraud."

Candida is part of the Neighbourhood Team based at Warminster Police Station, Station Road, Warminster, BA12 9BR. T: 101.

Coffee Morning – Thurs 16 Jan 2020 Hi all,

A reminder that there is a community coffee morning tomorrow (Thursday 16th) at The Three Horseshoes from 10 until noon.

Do go along if you have an hour or so to spare. Meet lots of friends, old and new, for a chat over a cup of Ben’s freshly brewed coffee. And if you’re new to the village, this is the place to come to be warmly welcomed and to say hello.

Regarding my previous email about Courier FRAUD. Someone replied to say that something similar happened to them just yesterday. They had a phone call saying someone had used their card to buy something abroad for £600. They put the phone down and rang the bank who confirmed that there was no such transaction and that this was certainly an attempted fraud. Based on the response we got when the Wiltshire Bobby Van came to the village, I’m sure this won’t have been the only case. Stay safe out there.

Chicken Chaser Walk – 31 Jan 2020 Hi everyone, Here’s a message from Jaimie Shore who’s taking a quick break from Panto rehearsals to lead the first Chicken Chaser walk of 2020 this Saturday.

"The Chapmanslade Chicken Chasers are heading out for their first walk of 2020 on Saturday 1st February at 11am leaving from The Three Horseshoes car park.

December's walk with a mixture of adults and smaller people took in the sights of Black Dog Woods, Adam's smallholding, and on down the hill to Heath House Farm and across the fields to Corsley Mill - with a quick stop under a tree to hide from the rain - heading along Mill Lane towards the Rectory. From there we headed towards Water Farm, bearing right to the top of the hill, and a left past Neil's bench back down to Die House Farm and the return trip to the pub."

Feel free to get in touch with Jaimie (contact details removed) if you'd like to know more, or have suggestions for a route. We're a friendly bunch and always love to see new people. Dogs with well behaved owners, and smaller people welcome.

Cheers Terry

Info about the HERBERT PROTOCOL – 8 Feb 2020 Hi all, Do you know about the Herbert Protocol? Well I certainly didn’t, but Minnie House, Clerk of the Parish Council, would like to spread awareness throughout our community.

It's a national scheme that encourages carers, family and friends to provide and put together useful information, which can then be used in the event of a vulnerable person going missing.

Chapmanslade NEWS: 2 Important Surveys – 2 Mar 2020 Hello everyone,

Spring has sprung (although some folks prefer to wait until the 20th March), so I’ve been asked to draw your attention to 2 surveys that are requesting your views on Green & Open Spaces - one from concerning overall strategy, the other, a local survey, wanting to know what improvements you’d like to see at our open-space, the Memorial Playing Field.

The subject of both these important surveys will be discussed at the next Parish Council meeting to be held on 12 March, at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

You can find the surveys, together with supporting information, on the Homepage of the village website at

Science Week Event: Volunteers Needed – 3 Mar 2020 Hi all,

Prof. Nigel Brown as part of Science Week is planning a really exciting upcoming event for the kids in our community - and he needs your help. So many kids are signed up to attend that Nigel needs more volunteer helpers (lab coats, hair nets, masks and goggles provided - only joking).

Here’s Nigel’s request.

"I could do with some volunteers to help with the Science Week demonstration on 14 March, 1.30 - 4.30pm in the Village Hall. The event is so popular that the existing helpers will be stretched to cope.

If you are a teenager (or know of one) doing science at school, why not help and earn yourself a Demonstrator's Certificate?

We could also do with a few female helpers as role models for girls. You don't need to know any science, as training will be given later this week!

Please let me know soonest if you can help get the village children excited about science by emailing me at (contact details removed).

This event is co-sponsored by the Royal Society of Biology

Fantastic Footpaths Meeting Tomorrow – 10 Mar 2020 Hi everyone, Fantastic Footpaths meeting tomorrow, 11th March at 7.00pm upstairs in the ‘Shoes.

Adam Oakley says, "Chapmanslade Fantastic Footpaths Group is meeting again upstairs in the Three Horseshoes. Everyone is welcome.

It's been nearly 2 years since we last got together to discuss and do. Many of you took on the task of adopting a footpath and this has meant many of the problems have been dealt with quickly and our footpath network is working well.

But... we want to make it better. We want to discuss setting up some action days where we replace 2 or 3 awkward styles for kissing gates. These days need everyone to help - don't worry if you can't work a spade or a sledge hammer, we need someone to make cake and tea as well as lots of other jobs."

And here’s a quiz question for you. Which footpath is pictured in the right hand photo? (courtesy of the History Group). You’ll need the Footpath number to get the answer right.

Parish Council Meeting – 11 Mar 2020 Hi everyone, There’s a Parish Council meeting this Thursday, 7.30pm at the Village Hall. Lots on the agenda should you wish to go along and have your say.

Please find the meeting agenda at: http://chapmanslade.org.uk/parish-council-agenda/

From: Ian Buick: Special Notice Re Coffee Morning on Thursday – 16 March 2020 Dear All

I have been having a discussion with Terry Rose who is responsible for communicating with all in Chapmanslade, as well as organising the History Group.

He has reached a consensus that the History Group should stop meeting for the moment. There are quite a number of the same 70+ people who also go to the Coffee Morning. In order to protect everyone we feel we should not meet this Thursday morning.

I intend to get a message out tonight, so please could you let me have your views by the end of the day.

Professor Brown has been discussing the current situation with Terry, and with his vast knowledge of viruses, is of the opinion they spread most rapidly in warm enclosed spaces with people in close proximity.

Best wishes Ian ______

Chapmanslade Info – 18 Mar 2020 Hi everyone,

A couple of notices for you - the first from the Parish Council and the second from Revd. Pauline about suspension of church services.

Chapmanslade Parish Council John Lewis, Vice Chair of the PC, has written an open letter to the community which can be found on the HOME page of the village website at http://chapmanslade.org.uk.

Church Notice Pauline’s message is attached below.

Best regards Terry

The Rectory

Dear All,

As you will have heard public services in our churches will now cease for the foreseeable future. It is hoped that the clergy will continue a pattern of prayer and worship in the meantime.

I want to reassure you that the church is still here to support you in whatever way we can in this difficult time. Please so not hesitate to give me, Revs Gay Maynard, Di Britten or Marian Curtis a ring or drop us an email should the need arise. We also have our wonderful LPA’s (Lay pastoral assistants) who are on the ground as it were, to offer support where needed. We will have both our churches open during the day so that people can come and pray or sit quietly. Opening hours are St Margaret’s Corsley from 9am until 6pm and St Philip and St James Chapmanslade from 8.30am until 3.30pm.

So from this Sunday, Mothering Sunday, two clergy will celebrate a short service of communion (We have to have two present to do this) and as part of this we will include a very short talk. Eventually we hope to be able to film this and upload it to YouTube so that it is accessible to everyone. I also propose to email anyone who wants the reading, the homily and a prayer for the week so that this can then be printed off and put through the letterbox of anyone we know who would want this and who cannot access the internet.

The Church of will be bringing out resources which anyone can access via the main C of E website and I will working on ways in which to support everyone remotely as it were over the next few days.

This is a very difficult situation for all of us, particularly those who are vulnerable to the virus, but it is also an opportunity for us to really join together in showing love, compassion and care to our neighbours, friends and community; wonderfully, this is already happening, what a sign of hope.

With love and prayers,

Pauline [email protected] Rural Dean Deanery Rector Cley Hill Churches

Chapmanslade Info – 18 Mar 2020 Hi everyone, lots going on but for now …..

A message from Chapmanslade Parish Council

The Annual Parish meeting and the next Parish Council meeting, both due to be held on 9th April, have been cancelled in response to recent government advice on coronavirus procedures.

This is also likely to be extended to the May and June Parish Council meetings.

Please keep an eye on the Parish Council page of the Village website at http://chapmanslade.org.uk/parish-council-minutes/ for any matters that may arise of interest e.g. planning notices, and further information regarding meetings.

Clerk Chapmanslade Parish Council

Following up on John Lewis’s Parish Council message from my previous email suggesting that despite all the current technology options, a simple phone call is very often appreciated. We took up John’s suggestion and made several phone calls to friends in the village - just for chat. And he was right; folks did very much appreciate the call - which in two cases resulted in switching over to FaceTime so we could see each other. Good call John.

Keep well, Terry

Chapmanslade Information – 19 Mar 2020 Hi everyone, I’d like to tell you about a couple of the things that are going on right now in the village.

First of all, Ben and his fantastic team at the Three Horseshoes have launched a takeaway service for us. It would be great if we could support the pub in their efforts to help us. Well done Ben’s team.

Takeaway food and drink is available from this evening onward. You can place your order any time and either pick-up from the pub or have it dropped-off to your doorstep if you live in the village. You can also start pre-ordering Sunday Roast if you like. Call the pub on: 01373 832211. Click on the links below to see the menus, which will also be dropped to everyone in the village along with a letter from the Chapmanslade Covid-19 Action group (see below). Takeaway Menu Sunday Lunch Menu

Also, a group of villagers have formed a Chapmanslade Coronavirus Action Group. Robert Thackway says,

I hope everyone is keeping their spirits up in these difficult times. Last night a few members of the village came together and became 'COV-AG'. The CoronaVirus Action Group. Our main goal at this time is to make sure everyone is safe and well provided for even if they are in insolation. We are looking for some high spirited volunteers to help in any way they can and keep our community safe . This group is also for people who need help with anything and we will do our very best to provide you with what you need! Stay safe everyone!

Over the next day or so COV-AG will ‘leaflet-drop’ every household in the village with further information and with hard copies of Ben’s takeaway menus. You can also this group on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Chapmansladevillage/.

Chapmanslade Information – 22 Mar 2020 Hi everyone,

Disappointing news about the Three Horseshoes and the latest from COV-AG.

The Three Horseshoes have had to close, and decided that they cannot continue the proposed takeaway service.

Ben and team write, “Due to the latest government statements we unfortunately will be closing for the foreseeable future. Also with the closure of the kitchen and cease of supplies we sadly won't be able to carry out the plan of free school lunches. We are currently looking into a way around it. No need to say that we are absolutely devastated and we will miss you all very, very much. We hope everyone remains well and look forward to seeing you as soon as possible.”

But Ben does have some GOOD NEWS. For today (Sunday) only, from 11 am till 4 pm, if you bring your empty milk bottles to the pub they fill it up with any available beer. £1/pint takeaway. Includes: Butcombe bitter, Butcombe gold, Birra Moretti, Kronenbourg, Fosters, Guinness, Thatchers gold, Thatcher haze. This is fantastic offer.

The COV-AG have issued a Newsletter packed with lots of information which can be found on a dedicated Coronavirus page on the Chapmanslade website. Also on this new webpage you’ll find other Coronavirus information. Please take a look. You can find it at: http://chapmanslade.org.uk/coronavirus/. If you have any feedback about the new page or requests for COV-AG you can reply to this email and I’ll forward you messages.

Key Message for today “Don’t visit Mum today. It’s the best way to show you love her”

Please minimise the risk to your mother by not physically visiting on Mothering Sunday. Send a card; speak on the phone or by a video app to send your love. Stay at home, protect our NHS and together we we’ll get through this.

Stay safe Terry

Chapmanslade Information – 28 Mar 2020

Good morning everyone on this lovely sunny but rather chilly morning.

It’s about time we had some good news so today I want to tell you about the great work that the Chapmanslade Coronavirus Action Group (COV-AG) have been doing for those who are either self isolating, in need of help and support or living alone throughout the parish.

There are now volunteers in place picking up and delivering shopping and prescriptions, plus 'telephone buddies’ keeping in touch with those who have said they would appreciate a call for a friendly chat.

Other members of COV-AG are coordinating postings on the village website with the Community Facebook private group. Facebook posts cover topics such as home exercise videos (by our very own village professional), games, gardening tips, things that are cheerful and very funny, wonderful singing and piano playing videos by villagers, and even scientific fact checking to ensure that ‘false facts’ about the Coronavirus do not go unchallenged. If you are not signed up to the Chapmanslade Village Community Facebook Group, why not give it a try by clicking https://www.facebook.com/groups/Chapmansladevillage/. Call the COV-AG Help Lines if you are unsure (see below).

COV-AG are also working in close cooperation with the Cross Keys Community pub in Corsley, which is now the official food centre for our area - not just for those in need but for everyone. Volunteers are ready to deliver food orders to Chapmanslade if needed. Take a look at the Cross Keys website at https://www.crosskeyscorsley.co.uk. In addition, a Supplier Directory will be available shortly which will list anyone delivering into Chapmanslade.

All this does not happen by accident. A core team is working their socks off making this happen - supported by the Church, the Parish Council and the Village Voice Initiatives team who are providing expertise and funding.

And of course this is over and above all the neighbourly picking-up, collecting, dog walking and phoning that is taking place throughout this wonderful community of ours.

So that’s a lot of good news, but if you know of, or are concerned about, anyone who you think may have slipped through the net, even if it is yourself, please call one of the COV-AG Help Lines below (contact details removed):

Thanks and keep well, Terry

Chapmanslade Information – 1 Apr 2020 Hello everyone, Today, Chapmanslade Parish Council launches its FOOD BOXES FUND appeal set out below in a letter by John Lewis.

Dear Residents of Chapmanslade,

CORONA / COVID-19 VIRUS

Following my earlier letter, I am very pleased in the way that Chapmanslade Villagers are looking out for each other. There are many stories of you helping out others & generally keeping up morale. Well Done!

It is clear that the crisis is affecting some more than others and as such our “Chapmanslade Covid-19 Action Group” (COV-AG) have requested our help to fund food boxes for the vulnerable within the village who are unable to get out to the shops, together with those that are struggling financially to purchase their own food.

So, we are asking for donations of money to purchase food boxes for £15.00 each. (All contributions - of any amount - are welcome). This is a very worthy cause and would ask you to dig deep to help. I am heartened by the response so far - even before we launched the appeal, we had pledges of several hundred pounds. I am very pleased, but not surprised - it is a wonderful village we live in!

To make a donation, please contact either: • Ian Buick on: 01373 832318 or email: [email protected] • Keith Muston on: 01373 832755 or email: [email protected]

If emailing, please type “FOOD BOXES” as the subject of your email.

Thank you!

I know you will help with this (if you can) at the same time as carrying on with all of the “Good Neighbour” work to relieve isolation and help where required. If you need help yourself, please call the action group direct on 07964 880841

Don’t forget:

• A friendly phone call to those isolated will be appreciated • If you are going to the shops - do any neighbours need supplies? • Offering to collect medications • Keep safe!

With best wishes

Yours sincerely,

John Lewis

Vice Chairman - Chapmanslade Parish Council

Hello everyone there is much to share this Easter Sunday.

Easter day Message. Rector Pauline Reid has recorded a thought-provoking message which you can find at: https://www.cleyhillchurches.org/eastermessage.htm

Easter Eggs & Flowers - Thanks to Chapmanslade COVID-19 Action Group By now all households should have received a bunch of daffodils, and all children aged up to 18 years an egg, each with an Easter message.

Charlene Ridler says, “At the beginning of the week our COV-AG action group gave ourselves the challenge of spreading a little love and support by delivering Easter eggs to all children, and daffodils to all households, in the parish. Thank you so much to the COV-AG team, it was an amazing team effort in such a short space of time!

The village initiative fund (money raised from explorer trail) kindly donated to the group the money to set our plan to work. A huge thank you to the group!! Morrisons in Westbury also kindly donated 40 Easter eggs! A massive thank you to them, they couldn't do enough for us! We had a great team of 20 volunteers delivering to 310 houses and 115 children on Saturday

Last updated: June 8, 2020 21 Terry Rose Chapmanslade News & Information Emails afternoon - keeping strictly to COVID-19 government guidelines. Thank you so much to every volunteer that helped."

The group have tried their very best to reach all houses and children, but if you missed out or if you have received an egg but are dairy free, there are a few of these that can be swapped. Please reply to this email and I’ll pass on to Charlene.

The response has been absolutely incredible. Far too many messages of thanks to record here - some of them very moving. Well-done Chapmanslade. It’s a wonderful village we live in - especially in these difficult times. Enjoy these lovely photos.

Happy Easter everyone! Terry

Chapmanslade News – Fri 8 May 2020: 75th VE Day Hi everyone, Here are the answers for today’s Quiz below - for those of who haven’t already looked them up on the Internet. NOTE: Answers not shown in this compilation.

A few people have asked what went on VE Day in the village. Well here’s a short extract from the History Group’s recent book 'A History of Chapmanslade’ - copies of which can be purchased from myself for £10 with all profits going back to village funds (just send me an email). I’ve also shared a couple of photos of a village resident taken exactly 75 years ago at a party in Bath. Celia is the younger sister. ------It’s All Over! 8th May 1945 - peace was declared in Europe, but not in the Far East.

Well before the end of the war a Welcome Home Committee was formed to organise entertainments that would not only cheer everyone up, but also raise the money for a big celebration when the boys came home. VE Day 1945 and VE Day 1946 were jointly celebrated on 17-19th September 1946 with thanksgiving services, a dance, a children’s party and the Welcome Committee dinner in the recreation ground hut (the forerunner of the village hall) for all those who served. Mrs. Guy and Mrs. F Dredge did the catering. On the menu: - Cold tongue, cold beef, potatoes, salad, cheese, trifle, tea, coffee, light ale and minerals

Such a treat! Most of it was still on ration. ______

Hope you enjoyed your day. And for those who scored more than 30 points - have a light ale or minerals

Chapmanslade News – Fri 5 Jun 2020 Hi everyone, I’ve been asked to make you aware of a TELEPHONE SCAM regarding the NHS Track and Trace service. The following has been posted on our village Facebook page:

PLEASE BE BEWARE A friend has just had a call from supposedly from the “NHS Track and Trace" service. He was told that according to their system, he is likely to have been in close proximity to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. This means that he needs to self-isolate for 7 days and take a COVID-19 test within 72 hrs. No further information could be given due to it being “confidential.” The caller then went on to say, ”I just need a mailing address and payment card details so that we can finalise this and send the kit to you as there is a one-off fee of £50 for the kit, and test results. He then kept repeating “Could you read off the long card number for me, please.” When saying no, he carried on to say, "I'm afraid there is a charge, this is not a free service. Can you give me the card number please - this is very important, and there are penalties for not complying.”

The call was from a No Caller ID. The NHS track and trace team will only ever call you from 0300 013 5000 BUT scammers can duplicate telephone numbers or a text from the NHS. The Full Fact website https://fullfact.org/online/test-and-trace-scam provides information on how you can verify you are actually being contacted by the government’s Test and Trace service.

Thanks to Nigel Brown and Phil Holihead for alerting us all to this scam. ______
