Notes and Discussions Nietzsche and Aestheticism 1o Alexander Nehamas's Nietzsche: L~fe as Literature' has enjoyed an enthusiastic reception since its publication in 1985 . Reviewed in a wide array of scholarly journals and even in the popular press, the book has won praise nearly everywhere and has already earned for Nehamas--at least in the intellectual community at large--the reputation as the preeminent American Nietzsche scholar. At least two features of the book may help explain this phenomenon. First, Nehamas's Nietzsche is an imaginative synthesis of several important currents in recent Nietzsche commentary, reflecting the influence of writers like Jacques Der- rida, Sarah Kofman, Paul De Man, and Richard Rorty. These authors figure, often by name, throughout Nehamas's book; and it is perhaps Nehamas's most important achievement to have offered a reading of Nietzsche that incorporates the insights of these writers while surpassing them all in the philosophical ingenuity with which this style of interpreting Nietzsche is developed. The high profile that many of these thinkers now enjoy on the intellectual landscape accounts in part for the reception accorded the "Nietzsche" they so deeply influenced. -

False Variety: Plato's Fear of the Mass Media
ISSN: 2519-1268 Issue 4 (Autumn 2017), pp. 9-29 DOI: 10.6667/interface.4.2017.33 False Variety: Plato’s Fear of the Mass Media hua-κuei ho Chinese Culture University Abstract Plato’s criticisms of poetry in the Republic X have been compared by Alexander Nehamas to modern élitist criticisms of television in the 1970s and 80s. In his “Plato and the Mass Media” (1988), Nehamas explained that the poetry attacked by Plato —either Homer’s epics or the celebrated tragedies performed in theatres— was in the form of “popular entertainment” in the cultural context of Athens in the fifth century B.C. The aim of my paper is not to endorse the élitist attitude toward popular entertainment. What I wish to argue is that the variety shown by media does not entail our free choices among the various items. One significant feature of the mass media revealed by Nehamas is that the mimesis (representation/imitation) in it is “transparent.” The “transparent mimesis” is the representation which mirrors things simply according to how they appear to the audience. Due to the transparency, the work of popular entertainment “requires little or no interpretation.” In this paper, I will explore the concept of the “transparent mimesis” in Plato and compare it with some views in contemporary aesthetics. On freedom, I will compare it with Adorno. As for the variety shown in the transparent mimesis, I will challenge the idea that Greek art is “realistic”, by consulting the studies of aesthetics by Gombrich, Wollheim, and Halliwell. Mimesis resembles not simply real things, but things which appear to certain fixed points of views. -
A Philosophical Discussion of Representation
International Visual Literacy Association, Cheyenne, 1996 A PHILOSOPHICAL DISCUSSION OF REPRESENTATION One of the most basic theoretical areas in the study of visual communication and visual literacy is the nature of representation. Much of the discussion of this topic comes from either philosophy or aesthetics. This paper reviews some of the more important writings in this area in an attempt to develop a model of representation. The primary works reviewed include: E. H. Gombrich, "The Visual Image;" "Representation and Misrepresentation" Nelson Goodman, Languages of Art: An Approach to a Theory of Symbols, "Representation Re- presented" Paul Messaris, Visual Literacy: Image, Mind & Reality David Novitz, "Picturing" Marx Wartofsky, "Pictures, Representation, and Understanding;" "Visual Scenarios: The role of Representation in Visual Perception" Richard Wollheim, "Representation: The Philosophical Contribution to Psychology;" Pictures and Language;" and "Art, Interpretation, and Perception" In describing the requirements for a general theory of representation, Wollheim says it must answer two questions: What is it to represent? (what is the relationship between the representation and the something that it is of?) What, in the narrow sense of the term, is a representation? Using his two questions to guide our analysis, we find that the major theoretical issues that need to be investigated include: Is pictorial representation based on natural resemblance or convention? What is the relationship between pictures and reality? Finally, as part of this review, we are investigating if it is possible to develop an overriding theory of representation that accommodates the various issues and viewpoints. What is the relationship between pictures and reality? In beginning this discussion, let's first look at Wollheim's second question about what is a representation. -

WILLIAM WEG MAN Roman Zenner 2002 PAINTINGS AND PHOTOGRAPHS When William Wegman began his career in the late 1960s, he like many young artists of his generation decided to abandon painting preferring instead to use pho tography and video to explore contemporary issues in art. Why abandon painting at this point? Painting, after all, had been under attack since the invention of photogra phy in the mid-nineteenth century. Still its output has continued for centuries virtu ally without interruption. Perhaps it was because painting in the 60s seemed less exciting or less flexible than the new media and unable to satisfy the needs of artists and the public in a technological post-modem society. Against the aesthetics of post modernism, painting as a medium affirms the values of originality and uniqueness. But these values had already been called into question decades earlier by Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and others. The decision to abandon painting overlooks certain facts about its resiliency. Painting has had a long history of success as an art form within a broad range of diverse cultures. As Richard Wollheim has argued," If artists over the centuries had not succeeded in putting across what they wished to convey, they would have turned to some other activity .... Or their public would have asked them to do SO."1 At the conclusion of a lengthy book on pain~ing, Wollheim's strongest argument for the continuation of painting is its survival as an art form. -

RICHARD WOLLHEIM Copyright © British Academy 2001 – all rights reserved Richard Arthur Wollheim 1923–2003 RICHARD ARTHUR WOLLHEIM was born on 5 May 1923 in London, the younger son of Eric Wollheim, of a German Jewish family, and Constance Baker, whose family came from the West Country and for centuries were peasants. His father was a theatrical impresario, who from 1918 acted as the Diaghilev ballet’s London manager. His mother was a Gaiety show- girl, who performed as an actress playing to the troops during the First World War, but at her husband’s insistence left the stage when she married. In his posthumously published memoir of his childhood, Germs (2004), which begins with his tottering out through the front door into the light at the age of two, Richard traces the roots in childhood of a variety of emotions he experienced in later life—resentment against calm, quiet places, the lure of danger, shame at the unreliability of his body, certain fears of inundation—and paints vivid pictures of his parents’ opinions, routines, behaviour and character. His father was emancipated and although he embraced no religious faith—indeed, considered all religion to be folly, he insisted that Richard was brought up as a Christian, an encumbrance Richard freed himself from when he grew up, from then on regarding all religions as harmful illusions, and, like Hume and Nietzsche, believing that religions tend to be worse the further they stray from polytheism. At the age of 13 he went to Westminster School as a King’s Scholar. It was the first time that he had been away to boarding-school, something he had been looking forward to but which turned out to be very different from what he had expected. -

ISBN 0-674-45533-9 The history of Philosophy is spangled with occasional figures who are so fascinating and so irritating that the subject can never let them go: Socrates, Descartes, Nietzsche, Freud, Wittgenstein, Foucault to name but a few. The continuous love-hate relationship that philosophers feel or have felt for these figures is something that perhaps we ought to be able to explain. Indeed, could it not be that what makes us so annoyed or so fascinated is our inability to put our finger on precisely what it is that attracts or repels us about the character in question? Neither Descartes, nor Wittgenstein nor Freud figures in Alexander Nehamas' choice of Socratic disciples—his later chapters select Montaigne, Nietzsche and Foucault for attention—whereas Plato, Aristotle and Freud gain more attention in the explorations of John Cottingham, and Wittgenstein as well as Freud figure prominently in the book by Jonathan Lear: Cottingham and Lear share neither the Socratic focus of Nehamas nor his desire to unpack what accounts for our fascination; but there remains a certain coherence to this otherwise unrelated set of books all of which happened to be published in 1998. -

Introduction walter kaufmann was born in Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany, on July 1, 1921, and died in Princeton, New Jersey, on September 4, 1980, far too young, at fifty‑nine, for someone of his vitality.1 His colleague, the Princeton histo‑ rian Carl Schorske, remained lucid until his death in 2015, after having cel‑ ebrated his one‑hundredth birthday.2 Arthur Szathmary, who together with Walter Kaufmann joined Princeton’s Department of Philosophy in 1947, died in 2013 at ninety‑seven; and Joseph Frank, emeritus professor of compara‑ tive literature at Princeton, with whom Walter debated an understanding of Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground, passed away in 2013 at ninety‑four, some months after publishing his last book.3 It is hard to imagine Kaufmann’s sudden death at that age arising from an ordinary illness, and in fact the cir‑ cumstances fit a conception of tragedy—if not his own. According to Walter’s brother, Felix Kaufmann, Walter, while on one of his Faustian journeys of exploration to West Africa, swallowed a parasite that attacked his heart. In the months following, Walter died of a burst aorta in his Princeton home. His death does not fit his own conception of tragedy, for his bookThe Faith of a Heretic contains the extraordinary sentences: When I die, I do not want them to say: Think of all he still might have done. -
SYRIZA, Bloco and Podemos
Transnational networking and cooperation among neo-reformist left parties in Southern Europe during the Eurozone crisis: SYRIZA, Bloco and Podemos Vladimir Bortun The thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. March 2019 Abstract European parties to the left of social democracy have always lagged behind the main political families in terms of transnational cooperation at the level of the EU. However, the markedly transnational character of the Eurozone crisis and of the management of that crisis has arguably provided a uniquely propitious context for these parties to reduce that gap. This research project aims to establish whether they achieved that by focusing on three parties that were particularly prone to seeking an increase in their transnational cooperation: SYRIZA from Greece, Bloco de Esquerda from Portugal and Podemos from Spain. For these parties not only come from the member states most affected by the crisis, both economically and politically, but they also share several programmatic and strategic features favouring such an increase. By using a mix of document analysis, semi-structured interviews and non-participatory observation, the thesis discusses both the informal and formal transnational networking and cooperation among the three parties. This discussion reveals four key findings, with potentially useful insights for wider transnational party cooperation that are to be pursued in future research. Firstly, the transnational networking and cooperation among SYRIZA, Bloco and Podemos did increase at some point during the crisis, particularly around SYRIZA’s electoral victory in January 2015. Secondly, since the U-turn of that government in July 2015, SYRIZA’s relationship with both Bloco and Podemos has declined significantly, as reflected in their diverging views of the EU. -
