ABSTRACT THE SHELTER OF PHILOSOPHY: REPRESSION AND CONFRONTATION OF THE TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE IN THE WORKS OF SARAH KOFMAN by Ashlee M. Cummings Sarah Kofman, philosopher and survivor of the Holocaust, contributed to the treatment of the traumatic narrative as something to be feared and suppressed, yet she also broke from this tradition with the writing of her autobiography, Rue Ordener, rue Labat, which detailed the horrors she suffered during the German occupation of France and the aftermath of her father’s death in Auschwitz. This thesis aims to show that while her autobiography was a drastic separation from her previous writings, in which she denies any such telling of a traumatic story is necessary, all of Kofman’s final texts that were written immediately preceding her suicide express a certain urgency with regard to her personal history. This project considers how Kofman treated her autobiography, from paradoxically hiding and showcasing it, to her claims that it didn’t exist outside of her bibliography. Dr. Mohamad Haj Mohamad1 & Dr. Nadia Hamendi2 Abstract The dichotomy of art for art‘s sake and art for society‘s sake became a pressing concern in the Victorian period due to the pressure from government to use art as a means for championing its causes and aspirations, leaving artists feeling the need to redefine the identity and objectives of art. Believing in art as serving the creation only of beauty for its own sake led to the emergence and rise of art for art‘s sake, a movement that felt that art stripped of its true aesthetical values would suffer as a result. Art for art's sake is an assertion of the value of art away from any moral or didactic objectives, a process that adds a mask of luxury to literature. This paper traces the movement of art for art‘s sake, looking at its main figures from across Europe. It poses the question of whether art is supposed to moralize and teach or devote itself to the creation and championing of the cause of beauty and idealism. Believing that art had declined in an era of utility and rationalism, rebellion against Victorian middle class moral standards was unavoidable. -

False Variety: Plato's Fear of the Mass Media
ISSN: 2519-1268 Issue 4 (Autumn 2017), pp. 9-29 DOI: 10.6667/interface.4.2017.33 False Variety: Plato’s Fear of the Mass Media hua-κuei ho Chinese Culture University Abstract Plato’s criticisms of poetry in the Republic X have been compared by Alexander Nehamas to modern élitist criticisms of television in the 1970s and 80s. In his “Plato and the Mass Media” (1988), Nehamas explained that the poetry attacked by Plato —either Homer’s epics or the celebrated tragedies performed in theatres— was in the form of “popular entertainment” in the cultural context of Athens in the fifth century B.C. The aim of my paper is not to endorse the élitist attitude toward popular entertainment. What I wish to argue is that the variety shown by media does not entail our free choices among the various items. One significant feature of the mass media revealed by Nehamas is that the mimesis (representation/imitation) in it is “transparent.” The “transparent mimesis” is the representation which mirrors things simply according to how they appear to the audience. Due to the transparency, the work of popular entertainment “requires little or no interpretation.” In this paper, I will explore the concept of the “transparent mimesis” in Plato and compare it with some views in contemporary aesthetics. On freedom, I will compare it with Adorno. As for the variety shown in the transparent mimesis, I will challenge the idea that Greek art is “realistic”, by consulting the studies of aesthetics by Gombrich, Wollheim, and Halliwell. Mimesis resembles not simply real things, but things which appear to certain fixed points of views. -

CHAPTER ONE The Rise and Fall of Nietzschean Anti- Semitism REACTIONS OF ANTI- SEMITES PRIOR TO 1900 Discussions and remarks about Jews and Judaism can be found throughout Nietzsche’s writings, from the juvenilia and early letters until the very end of his sane existence. But his association with anti-Semitism during his life- time culminates in the latter part of the 1880s, when Theodor Fritsch, the editor of the Anti- Semitic Correspondence, contacted him. Known widely in the twentieth century for his Anti- Semites’ Catechism (1887), which appeared in forty- nine editions by the end of the Second World War, Fritsch wrote to Nietz sche in March 1887, assuming that he harbored similar views toward the Jews, or at least that he was open to recruitment for his cause.1 We will have an opportunity to return to this episode in chapter five, but we should observe that although Fritsch erred in his assumption, from the evidence he and the German public possessed at the time, he had more than sufficient reason to consider Nietzsche a like- minded thinker. First, in 1887 Nietzsche was still associated with Richard Wagner and the large circle of Wagnerians, whose ideology contained obvious anti- Semitic tendencies. Nietzsche’s last published work on Wagner, the deceptive encomium Richard Wagner in Bayreuth (1876), may contain the seeds of Nietzsche’s later criticism of the composer, but when it was published, it was regarded as celebratory and a sign of Nietzsche’s continued allegiance to the Wagnerian cultural move- ment. -

Introduction. The Role of the Danish Critic Georg Brandes The age of Friedrich Nietzsche in Scandinavia came after the age of Émile Zola, to whom Scandinavian writers such as Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg were indebted with a view to naturalistic ideas and attitudes. Friedrich Nietzsche appears to me the most interesting writer in German literature at the present time. Though little known even in his own country, he is a thinker of a high order, who fully deserves to be studied, discussed, contested and mastered (Brandes 1915: 1). This is what the Danish critic Georg Brandes asserted in his long Essay on Aristocratic Radicalism, which was published in August 1889 in the periodical Tilskueren from Copenhagen, and this is the moment when Nietzsche became to be known not only in Scandinavia but also in other European countries. The Essay on Aristocratic Radicalism was the first study of any length to be devoted, in the whole of Europe, to this man, whose name has since flown round the world and is at this moment one of the most famous among our contemporaries (Ibidem: 59), wrote Brandes ten years later. The term Aristocratic Radicalism had been previously used by the Danish critic in a letter he wrote to Nietzsche himself, from Copenhagen on 26 November 1887: …a new and original spirit breathes to me from your books […] I find much that harmonizes with my own ideas and sympathies, the depreciation of the ascetic ideals and the profound disgust with democratic mediocrity, your aristocratic radicalism […] In spite of your universality you are very German in your mode of thinking and writing (Ibidem: 63). -

REVISED FEB 2010 Louisiana Architecture 1945 - 1965 Modernism Triumphant – Commercial and Institutional Buildings Jonathan and Donna Fricker Fricker Historic Preservation Services, LLC September 2009 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND America in the years following World War II saw the triumph of European Modernism in commercial and institutional buildings. Modernism was a style that claimed not to be a style, but rather an erudite and compelling movement towards rationality and purposefulness in architecture. It grew out of art, architectural and handicraft reform efforts in Europe in the years after World War I. These came together in the Bauhaus school of design in Weimar, Germany, which sought to teach all artists, artisans and architects to work together, in common service, towards “the building of the future.” Originally founded in 1906 by the Grand-Duke of Saxe-Weimar as a school for the arts and crafts, the Bauhaus emerged in the 1920s as the focus of a radical new approach to industrial design and architecture. Inherent in the Bauhaus was a commitment to marshalling the greater art world in the service of humanity. And there were strong associations with political reform, socialism, and a mandate for art to respond to the machine age. The new architecture the Bauhaus school epitomized, the International Style as it came to be known, had a “stark cubic simplicity” (Nikolas Pevsner) – completely and profoundly devoid of ornament. Its buildings are characterized by: 1) a machined metal and glass framework, with flat neutral (generally white) surfaces pierced by thin bands of windows (ribbon windows) sometimes turning the corner; 2) an overall horizontal feel; 3) functional and decidedly flat roofs; 4) frequent use of the cantilever principal for balconies and upper stories; and 5) the use of “pilotis”—or slender poles – to raise the building mass, making it appear to float above the landscape. -

ISBN 0-674-45533-9 The history of Philosophy is spangled with occasional figures who are so fascinating and so irritating that the subject can never let them go: Socrates, Descartes, Nietzsche, Freud, Wittgenstein, Foucault to name but a few. The continuous love-hate relationship that philosophers feel or have felt for these figures is something that perhaps we ought to be able to explain. Indeed, could it not be that what makes us so annoyed or so fascinated is our inability to put our finger on precisely what it is that attracts or repels us about the character in question? Neither Descartes, nor Wittgenstein nor Freud figures in Alexander Nehamas' choice of Socratic disciples—his later chapters select Montaigne, Nietzsche and Foucault for attention—whereas Plato, Aristotle and Freud gain more attention in the explorations of John Cottingham, and Wittgenstein as well as Freud figure prominently in the book by Jonathan Lear: Cottingham and Lear share neither the Socratic focus of Nehamas nor his desire to unpack what accounts for our fascination; but there remains a certain coherence to this otherwise unrelated set of books all of which happened to be published in 1998. -

These two paragraphs are a caustic attack on the Symbolist movement in general, a frequent target of the Futurists, and on two of its representatives in particular: Konstantin Bal'mont (1867-1943), a poetwho enjoyed enormouspopu larityin Russia during thefirst decade of this century, was subsequentlyforgo tten, and died as an emigrein Paris;Valerii Briusov(18 73-1924), poetand scholar,leader of the Symbolist movement, editor of the Salles and literary editor of Russum Thought, who after the Revolution joined the Communist party and worked at Narkompros. 2. Leonid Andreev (1871-1919), a writer of short stories and a playwright, started in a realistic vein following Chekhov and Gorkii; later he displayed an interest in metaphysicsand a leaning toward Symbolism. He is at his bestin a few stories written in a realistic manner; his Symbolist works are pretentious and unconvincing. The use of the plural here implies that, in the Futurists' eyes, Andreev is just one of the numerousepigones. 3. Several disparate poets and prose writers are randomly assembled here, which stresses the radical positionof the signatories ofthis manifesto, who reject indiscriminately aU the literaturewritt en before them. The useof the plural, as in the previous paragraphs, is demeaning. Maksim Gorkii (pseud. of Aleksei Pesh kov, 1�1936), Aleksandr Kuprin (1870-1938), and Ivan Bunin (1870-1953) are writers of realist orientation, although there are substantial differences in their philosophical outlook, realistic style, and literary value. Bunin was the first Rus sianwriter to wina NobelPrize, in 1933.AJeksandr Biok (1880-1921)is possiblythe best, and certainlythe most popular, Symbolist poet.
