The song is considered more "spoiler-heavy" than Still Alive in that it makes direct reference to revelations in the game, such as the name of the woman whose consciousness formed GLaDOS' matrix. After the Want You Gone of the closing credits song that Want You Gone composed for Portal, Valve asked him to return as the writer for the credits song on Portal 2. Want You Gone with the previous song, voice actress and opera singer Ellen McLain performs the song in character as the insane artificial Want You Gone GLaDOS, with her voice digitally filtered to simulate the computer sound of the game. The song was met with popular approval rivaling that of its predecessor. Both the game and the song were hotly anticipated, and "Want You Gone" immediately spawned many fan videos and covers. This studio recording is very similar to the game version but features Coulton on lead vocals instead of Ellen McLain. His version also has less of a synthetic tone, sounding more like an original studio recording Want You Gone a few effects. Want You Gone often performs the song in medley with "Still Alive". At PAX Prime Coulton debuted a live version of the song on Zendrum instead of acoustic guitar, resulting in a performance much closer to the album version. The song can be downloaded for free as part of the Portal 2 Soundtrack at the game's website. A studio version performed by Coulton appears Want You Gone the album Artificial Heartwhich can be ordered through Coulton's website or on iTunes. Additionally, numerous clips of Coulton performing "Want You Gone" are available on YouTube [1]as well as a clip of Ellen McLain performing the song at an event in her normal singing voice. Unofficially, many versions of the song have been circulated, primarily through YouTube. British composer Blake Robinson and his Synthetic Orchestra creates orchestrated renditions of many popular video game themes. In April he released an orchestrated cover of Want You Gone. • From Voodoo to Viruses: the Evolution of the Zombie in Twentieth Century Popular Culture
From Voodoo to Viruses: The Evolution of the Zombie in Twentieth Century Popular Culture By Margaret Twohy Adviser: Dr. Bernice Murphy A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the Degree of Master’s of Philosophy in Popular Literature Trinity College Dublin Dublin, Ireland October 2008 2 Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to explore the evolutionary path the zombie has followed in 20th Century popular culture. Additionally, this thesis will examine the defining characteristics of the zombie as they have changed through its history. Over the course of the last century and edging into the 21st Century, the zombie has grown in popularity in film, videogames, and more recently in novels. The zombie genre has become a self-inspiring force in pop culture media today. Films inspired a number of videogames, which in turn, supplied the film industry with a resurgence of inspirations and ideas. Combined, these media have brought the zombie to a position of greater prominence in popular literature. Additionally, within the growing zombie culture today there is an over-arcing viral theme associated with the zombie. In many films, games, and novels there is a viral cause for a zombie outbreak. Meanwhile, the growing popularity of zombies and its widening reach throughout popular culture makes the genre somewhat viral-like as well. Filmmakers, authors and game designers are all gathering ideas from one another causing the some amount of self- cannibalisation within the genre. 3 Table of Contents Introduction 4 Chapter One 7 Evolution of the Dead Chapter Two 21 Contaminants, Viruses, and Possessions—Oh my! Chapter Three 34 Dawn of the (Digital) Dead Chapter Four 45 Rise of the Literary Zombie Conclusion 58 Bibliography 61 4 Introduction There are perhaps few, if any fictional monsters that can rival the versatility of the humble zombie (or zombi)1.

  • The Heroic Journey of a Villain
Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Enska The Heroic Journey of a Villain The Lost and Found Humanity of an Artificial Intelligence Ritgerð til MA-prófs í Ensku Ásta Karen Ólafsdóttir Kt.: 150390-2499 Leiðbeinandi: Guðrún B. Guðsteinsdóttir Maí 2017 Abstract In this essay, we will look at the villain of the Portal franchise, the artificial intelligence GLaDOS, in context with Maureen Murdock’s theory of the “Heroine’s Journey,” from her book The Heroine’s Journey: Woman’s Quest for Wholeness. The essay argues that although GLaDOS is not a heroine in the conventional sense, she is just as important of a figure in the franchise as its protagonist, Chell. GLaDOS acts both as the first game’s narrator and villain, as she runs the Aperture Science Enrichment Center where the games take place. Unlike Chell, GLaDOS is a speaking character with a complex backstory and goes through real character development as the franchise’s story progresses. The essay is divided into four chapters, a short history of women’s part as characters in video games, an introduction to Murdock’s “The Heroine’s Journey,” and its context to John Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey,” a chapter on the Portal franchises, and then we go through “The Heroine’s Journey,” in regards to GLaDOS, and each step in its own subchapter. Our main focus will be on the second installment in the series, Portal 2. Since, in that game, GLaDOS goes through most of her heroine’s journey. In the first game, Portal, GLaDOS separates from her femininity and embraces the masculine, causing her fractured psyche, and as the player goes through Portal 2 along with her, she reclaims her femininity, finds her inner masculinity, and regains wholeness.

You get the JoCo Cruise, and it’s an annual gathering for those who love sci-fi, games with many-sided dice and the musician Jonathan Coulton. By John Schwartz May 6, 2019 It is the first concert of the JoCo Cruise 2019, and things are going so wrong. The musicians can’t hear themselves sing. Instruments drop out at random. One of the performers, Jim Boggia, has lost his voice. Jonathan Coulton, the singer-songwriter for whom the cruise is named, grouses that it is a “train wreck on a boat.” They carry on, trying to wrestle a show from the mess. Mr. Boggia starts playing “When You Wish Upon a Star” on his ukulele and raspily invites us all to sing along. The assembled hundreds join in a mass mumble, but one woman’s voice stands out and confidently rises, clear and lovely. Paul Sabourin, another of the performers, hops off the stage and hands her a microphone. The performers complete the song to rousing cheers. I spot the singer. She is wearing extravagantly long elf ears. Now in its ninth year, the JoCo Cruise is a grand annual gathering of the nerd tribe. You may not have heard of Mr. Coulton, who left his job writing software in 2005 to explore a music career, but he has built a fervid online community of 1 of 14 What Happens When You Put 2,000 Nerds on a Boat? - The New..

FEAR AND LOATHING: SHAME, SHAMING, AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY Elizabeth L. Rosenblatt* INTRODUCTION Shame is civilizing. It is the governing drive of conscience; if people had no shame, the rule of law would lose much of its power, and might would often mean right. Shaming—the public attempt to impose shame on others—is an equally important driver of behavior. People strive to avoid humiliation and the loss of reputation; we steer clear of “bad” behaviors even if they would benefit us. In the words of Seneca the Younger, “Shame can forbid sometimes what the law does not.”1 Shame and shaming are crucial to our understanding of intellectual property law and norms, and yet they have gone largely unexplored in the intellectual property literature. Many scholars have examined in- tellectual property norms and how they interact with the law.2 But it is not enough to point out that someone acts a certain way because of norms; we must also understand the motivational forces that drive people to conform.
