85 A Consideration of the Educational and Illuminative Function of the Actor in Richard Wagner’s Essay On the Actor and Singer Asuka YAMAZAKI Abstract This paper addresses the essay On the Actor and Singer (Über Schauspieler und Sänger) (1872) by Richard Wagner, the nineteenth-century German composer, and investigates his views on the national educational and illuminative function of the actor. Conventional research has not regarded how Wagner valued, from a viewpoint of cultural nationalism, the actor’s important abilities and function. Wagner realized the actor’s cooperativity and artistry in German theater, and recognized him not only as a mere medium between artwork and audience, but also as a teacher who has a didactic effect on the audience. In his relationships with actors, Wagner paid attention especially to their acting capabilities and recitation techniques. From the viewpoint of theater history and artistic discussions of the nineteenth century, this paper discusses how Wagner also emphasized the actor’s function and educational effect as a teacher as entailing an advanced acting technique and perfor- mance. Furthermore, in the context of Hegel’s aesthetics and Schopenhauer’s philosophy, Wagner considered how actors’ “self-abandonment” realized a high order of art and didactic effect. We can see here a new image of the actor, built by Wagner in his conception of total art, as a public person who connected to the actor’s mechanical function in the dramatic staging of the age of the “director’s theater” (Regietheater) of the avant-garde. Carroll ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT CHRISTINA CARROLL: Cultural Memory and National Representation: The Franco- Prussian War in French and German Literature, 1871-1900 (under the direction of Lloyd Kramer) This thesis examines the memory of the Franco-Prussian War in nineteenth-century French and German literature from a transnational and comparative perspective. It focuses on how four writers – Alphonse Daudet, Émile Zola, Theodor Fontane, and Detlev von Liliencron – used representations of the war to construct visions of their respective nations, which they defined against the enemy “other” and delineated in political, social, gendered, and racial terms. As it makes clear, although these authors directed their texts at a national audience, many of their works crossed the border – so even as the writers posited themselves against each other, they remained in dialogue. The thesis also incorporates reviewers’ responses to these writers’ representations, and considers the scope of their popular appeal. It contends that this ongoing, contested, and transnational process of negotiation between writers, reviewers, and readers helped shape the memory of the war and understandings of nation in nineteenth-century France and Germany. -

Sie wurzelte in den Freiheitskriegen, stand unter dem Einfluß von Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, Ernst Moritz Arndt und Johann Gottlieb Fichte, war geprägt durch eine idealistische Volkstumslehre, christliche Erweckung und patriotische Freiheitsliebe. Diese antinapoleonische Nationalbewegung deutscher Studenten war politische Jugendbewegung und die erste gesamtnationale Organisation des deutschen Bürgertums überhaupt, die 1817 mit dem Wartburgfest die erste gesamtdeutsche Feier ausrichtete und mit rund 3.000 Mitgliedern 1818/19 etwa ein Drittel der Studentenschaft des Deutschen Bundes umfaßte.2 Die zur nationalen Militanz neigende Burschenschaft, zu einem Gutteil hervorgegangen aus dem Lützowschen Freikorps, setzte ihr nationales Engagement in neue soziale Lebensformen um, die das Studentenleben von Grund auf reformierten. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT OF THESIS There have been many surveys of the general reception of the Tristan story in the nineteenth century and the countless ver sions which it inspired including Richard Wagner’s music-drama. The present study examines the nineteenth-century literal trans lations which made the Middle High German form of the story available again. Gottfried von Strassburg’s text underwent a stylistic transformation during each transition into modern German. Modern and medieval modes of poetic expression were different enough to force the translators to take up a definite attitude to the problem; compromise was difficult. The early translators, Hermann Kurz and Karl Simrock, were faithful to the letter of the original, but perhaps too much spellbound by its external form to convey to the modern reader its essential grace. -

1.9.13 Berlin 1881 chess tournament - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Berlin 1881 chess tournament From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Deutscher Schachbund (DSB, the German Chess Federation) had been founded in Leipzig on July 18, 1877. When the next meeting took place in the Schützenhaus, Leipzig on July 15, 1879, sixty-two clubs had become members of the federation. Hofrat Dr. Rudolf von Gottschall became Chairman and Hermann Zwanzig the General Secretary.[1] When foreign players were invited to Berlin in 1881, an important and successful formulae was completed. A master tournament was organised every second year, and Germans could partake in many groups and their talents qualified for master tournaments by a master title in the Hauptturnier.[2] The Berlin 1881 chess tournament (the second DSB Congress,2.DSB-Kongreß), organised by Hermann Zwanzig and Emil Schallopp, took place in Berlin from August 29 to September 17, 1881.[3] The brightest lights among the German participants were Louis Paulsen, his brother Wilfried Paulsen, and Johannes Minckwitz. Great Britain was represented by Joseph Henry Blackburne, the United States by James Mason, a master from Ireland. Mikhail Chigorin travelled from Russia, and two great masters from Poland: Szymon Winawer and Johannes Zukertort, also participated. Karl Pitschel, from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, arrived and played his games in the first three rounds, but was unable to complete the tournament. A consideration of over 1500 opera reviews from close to thirty periodicals, however, paints a more complex picture. In addition to a fascination with the supernatural, composers were drawn to a variety of libretti, including Biblical and Classical topics, and considered the application of recitative and other conventions most historians have overlooked because of their un-German heritage. Despite the variety of approaches and conceptions of what a German opera might look like, writers from Vienna to Kassel shared a common aspiration to develop a true German opera.
