As further noted on the web- site’s home page, the total number of books of poetry and fiction amounts to a much lower percentage of the total titles published, that is, around 0.7%.1 We, however, mistake past American reading if we draw conclusions based on the present state of things. In the Gilded Age a significant percentage of books published in the United States consisted of books in translation, and Ameri- cans read internationally even at a moment of national consolidation after the divisive Civil War. A subset of Americans’ international reading—nearly a hundred original texts, approximately 180 American translations, more than a thousand editions and reprint editions, and hundreds of thousands of books strong—consisted of popular German fiction written by women and translated by American women. The adventures of this fiction in the United States concern us here. · xi · ACKNowLEDGMENTS This study emerges from a glimmer of an idea I had longer ago than I care to remember. It only gradually became feasible as I returned to it intermittently over many years and began to uncover information that I had not previously suspected existed, in particular, the historical record left behind by the three translators, Ann Mary Coleman, Annis Lee Wister, and Mary Stuart Smith. I would like to thank three former graduate research assistants, Shelly Stumme Schrappen, April Seager, and especially Alyssa Howards, who early on aided me in assembling material and locating archives that were to become critical to my work. It thereby provides the chronological extension to an existing line of studies that evaluate the production and reception of German-English literary translations in the second half of the twentieth century: notably, the survey volumes by Uta Kreuter (1985), Mark Rectanus (1990a) and, more recently, Wiebke Sievers (2007) who concludes her assessment period in 1999. Continuing the investigation into the twenty-first century, the present thesis combines research into new developments in selected focal territories – Germany, the UK and US – with an enquiry into the contemporary relevance of political and other borders in the circulation of German-English translated books. It thus offers an up-to-date account of activities for German-English translation in these territories; at the same time, it contributes to sociologically oriented scholarship on a methodological and theoretical level.

Jewish Writers in Contemporary Germany: The Dead Author Speaks Abstract The question I wish to address in this essay is really quite simple: Given the fact that there are "Jews" who seem to play a major role in contemporary German "Kultur" (at least that narrower definition of culture, meaning the production of cultural artifacts, such as books—a field which, at least for Englemann, was one of the certain indicators of a Jewish component in prewar German culture)—what happened to these "Jews" (or at least the category of the "Jewish writer") in postwar discussions of culture? Or more simply: who lulled the remaining Jews in contemporary German culture and why? Why is it not possible to speak about "German-Jews" in the contemporary criticism about German culture? And, more to the point, what is the impact of this denial on those who (quite often ambivalently) see (or have been forced to see) themselves as "Germans" and "Jews," but not as both simultaneously.

    Popularizing the World: Karl Andree’s Globus KIRSTEN BELGUM UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN In April 1836, a young man from Braunschweig wrote to Rudolf Vieweg, one of the major publishers of that city,to submit the first part of his translation of an American text. Knowing it might not be accepted, he concluded his letter with an invitation: «Sollten Sie einmal wieder ein ausländisches Werk übertragen lassen,» the letter writer would guarantee, «daß ich es so schnell und elegant übertragen werde, wie irgend einer in Deutschland; denn ich bin kein Neuling in solchen Arbeiten» (Andree, Letter). This offer is repre- sentative of the energy and creativity of Karl Andree (1808 – 75) who, over the next few decades, would have a notable impact on the type and amount of knowledge about the world distributed in Germany.The story of Andree and his successful periodical Globus (published from 1862 to 1910) suggests that the increase in travel itself was only one factor in the rapid expansion of travel writing in the nineteenth century.1 The role of translators, editors, publishers, and the networks of borrowing and recycling that they created were central to the ways in which travel and travel writing spread across Europe and presented ever more perspectives on life around the globe. In recent decades excellent research has been conducted on the significant increase in the writing, publication, and consumption of texts (both factual and fictional) about far-flung places in the world in the nineteenth century. Some of the best scholarship has been dedicated to uncovering dominant European cultural and racial prejudices that lay at the base of much travel and travel writing.

Jones HCM 3 (2): 173–194 http://doi.org/10.18352/hcm.482 Abstract Recent research on internal colonization in Imperial Germany empha- sizes how racial and environmental chauvinism drove plans for agri- cultural settlement in the ‘polonized’ German East. Yet policymakers’ dismay over earlier endeavours on the peat bogs of northwest Germany and their admiration for Dutch achievements was a constant refrain. This article traces the heterogeneous Dutch influences on German internal colonization between 1790 and 1914 and the mixed results of Germans efforts to adapt Dutch models of wasteland colonization. Indeed, despite rising German influence in transnational debates over European internal colonization, derogatory comparisons between medi- ocre German ventures and the unrelenting progress of the Dutch per- sisted. Thus, the example of northwest Germany highlights how mount- ing anxieties about ‘backwardness’ continued to mold the enterprise in the modern era and challenges the notion that the profound German influences on the Netherlands had no analog in the other direction.
