Carroll ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT CHRISTINA CARROLL: Cultural Memory and National Representation: The Franco- Prussian War in French and German Literature, 1871-1900 (under the direction of Lloyd Kramer) This thesis examines the memory of the Franco-Prussian War in nineteenth-century French and German literature from a transnational and comparative perspective. It focuses on how four writers – Alphonse Daudet, Émile Zola, Theodor Fontane, and Detlev von Liliencron – used representations of the war to construct visions of their respective nations, which they defined against the enemy “other” and delineated in political, social, gendered, and racial terms. As it makes clear, although these authors directed their texts at a national audience, many of their works crossed the border – so even as the writers posited themselves against each other, they remained in dialogue. The thesis also incorporates reviewers’ responses to these writers’ representations, and considers the scope of their popular appeal. It contends that this ongoing, contested, and transnational process of negotiation between writers, reviewers, and readers helped shape the memory of the war and understandings of nation in nineteenth-century France and Germany. -

Robert Blum und die Burschenschaft von Harald Lönnecker Koblenz 2006 Dateiabruf unter: www.burschenschaft.de Dateiabruf unter: www.burschenschaft.de Robert Blum und die Burschenschaft* von Harald Lönnecker In der Einleitung zur Verfassungsurkunde der Jenaischen Burschenschaft vom Juni 1815 heißt es: „Nur solche Verbindungen, die auf den Geist gegründet sind, auf welchen überhaupt nur Verbindungen gegründet sein sollten, auf den Geist, der uns das sichern kann, was uns nächst Gott das Heiligste und Höchste sein soll, nämlich Freiheit und Selbständigkeit des Vaterlands, nur solche Verbindungen benennen wir mit dem Namen einer Burschenschaft.“1 Die Burschenschaft war die Avantgarde der deutschen Nationalbewegung. Sie wurzelte in den Freiheitskriegen, stand unter dem Einfluß von Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, Ernst Moritz Arndt und Johann Gottlieb Fichte, war geprägt durch eine idealistische Volkstumslehre, christliche Erweckung und patriotische Freiheitsliebe. Diese antinapoleonische Nationalbewegung deutscher Studenten war politische Jugendbewegung und die erste gesamtnationale Organisation des deutschen Bürgertums überhaupt, die 1817 mit dem Wartburgfest die erste gesamtdeutsche Feier ausrichtete und mit rund 3.000 Mitgliedern 1818/19 etwa ein Drittel der Studentenschaft des Deutschen Bundes umfaßte.2 Die zur nationalen Militanz neigende Burschenschaft, zu einem Gutteil hervorgegangen aus dem Lützowschen Freikorps, setzte ihr nationales Engagement in neue soziale Lebensformen um, die das Studentenleben von Grund auf reformierten. Art and Politics at the Neapolitan Court of Ferrante I, 1458-1494
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: KING OF THE RENAISSANCE: ART AND POLITICS AT THE NEAPOLITAN COURT OF FERRANTE I, 1458-1494 Nicole Riesenberger, Doctor of Philosophy, 2016 Dissertation directed by: Professor Meredith J. Gill, Department of Art History and Archaeology In the second half of the fifteenth century, King Ferrante I of Naples (r. 1458-1494) dominated the political and cultural life of the Mediterranean world. His court was home to artists, writers, musicians, and ambassadors from England to Egypt and everywhere in between. Yet, despite its historical importance, Ferrante’s court has been neglected in the scholarship. This dissertation provides a long-overdue analysis of Ferrante’s artistic patronage and attempts to explicate the king’s specific role in the process of art production at the Neapolitan court, as well as the experiences of artists employed therein. By situating Ferrante and the material culture of his court within the broader discourse of Early Modern art history for the first time, my project broadens our understanding of the function of art in Early Modern Europe. I demonstrate that, contrary to traditional assumptions, King Ferrante was a sophisticated patron of the visual arts whose political circumstances and shifting alliances were the most influential factors contributing to his artistic patronage. Unlike his father, Alfonso the Magnanimous, whose court was dominated by artists and courtiers from Spain, France, and elsewhere, Ferrante differentiated himself as a truly Neapolitan king. Yet Ferrante’s court was by no means provincial. His residence, the Castel Nuovo in Naples, became the physical embodiment of his commercial and political network, revealing the accretion of local and foreign visual vocabularies that characterizes Neapolitan visual culture. -

1.9.13 Berlin 1881 chess tournament - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Berlin 1881 chess tournament From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Deutscher Schachbund (DSB, the German Chess Federation) had been founded in Leipzig on July 18, 1877. When the next meeting took place in the Schützenhaus, Leipzig on July 15, 1879, sixty-two clubs had become members of the federation. Hofrat Dr. Rudolf von Gottschall became Chairman and Hermann Zwanzig the General Secretary.[1] When foreign players were invited to Berlin in 1881, an important and successful formulae was completed. A master tournament was organised every second year, and Germans could partake in many groups and their talents qualified for master tournaments by a master title in the Hauptturnier.[2] The Berlin 1881 chess tournament (the second DSB Congress,2.DSB-Kongreß), organised by Hermann Zwanzig and Emil Schallopp, took place in Berlin from August 29 to September 17, 1881.[3] The brightest lights among the German participants were Louis Paulsen, his brother Wilfried Paulsen, and Johannes Minckwitz. Great Britain was represented by Joseph Henry Blackburne, the United States by James Mason, a master from Ireland. Mikhail Chigorin travelled from Russia, and two great masters from Poland: Szymon Winawer and Johannes Zukertort, also participated. Karl Pitschel, from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, arrived and played his games in the first three rounds, but was unable to complete the tournament.
