Bosnian Muslim Reformists Between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina
Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2019 Harun Buljina All rights reserved ABSTRACT Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina This dissertation is a study of the early 20th-century Pan-Islamist reform movement in Bosnia-Herzegovina, tracing its origins and trans-imperial development with a focus on the years 1901-1914. Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires. -

THESIS ISLAM IN MODERN TURKEY (1938-82) flBSTRflCT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF MLOSOPHY IN ISLAMIC STUDIES BY AIJAZ AHMED UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF DR. SAYYIDAHSAN READER DEPARTMiNT OF ISLAMIC STTUDISS ALI6ARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 20Di STff^o % ABSTRACT In tenth century, the Turks of central Asia had converted to Islam and by the eleventh century they began to push their way into South-Eastern Russia and Persia. The Ottoman State emerged consequent to an Islamic movement under Ghazi Osman (1299-1326), founder of the dynasty, at Eskisehir, in North- Eastern Anatolia. Sufis, Ulema and Ghazis of Anatolia played an important role in this movement. For six centuries the Ottomans were almost constantly at war with Christian Europe and had succeeded in imposing the Islamic rule over a large part of Europe. The later Sultans could not maintain it strictly. With the expansion of the Ottoman dominions the rulers became more autocratic with the sole aim of conquering alien land. To achieve this the rulers granted freedom and cultural autonomy to his non-Muslim subjects and allowed the major religious groups to establish self governing communities under the leadership of their own religious chiefs. The recent work is spread over two parts containing eight chapters with a brief introduction and my own conclusions. Each part has four chapters. Part I, chapters I to IV, deals with the political mobilization of the Turkish peasants from the beginning of the modernization period and to the war of Independence as well as the initial stages of the transition to comparative politics. -

Ottoman Land Laws
THE OTTOMAN LAND LAWS WITH A COMMENTARY ON THE OTTOMAN LAND CODE OF 7th RAMADAN 1274 & i. IJ. R.'t^TUTE PRESIDENT OF THE LAND COURT - JERUSALEM. BARRISTER AT LAW OF THE MIDDLE TEMPLE. LATE OF THE INDIAN CIVIL SERVICE. &23S4- =M=M> =**-• ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Ptd. at Brash Conv Praam. / This book is dedicated to my friend John Buchan. / PREFACE. This book is intended to furnish an explanation of the Law of Mine and other State lands in Palestine, Tor the benefit or English speaking judges and lawyers It is the only buok in English which deals with the development of this branch of Turkish Law in Palestine, and for this reason apologies, which may be needed lor its contents, are not needed for its existence. It gives the text of the Ottoman laws contained in Sir Stanley Fisher's "Land Laws" together with the Iraq translation of the Provisional Laws. This makes it a fairly complete book or reference up to the time or the Occupation. The numerous Orders-in-Council and Ordinances, which have been passed since thai daLe, are collected in the two volumes ol "The Legislation or Pales tine" compiled by Mr. Norman Bentwich MC, which is adequately indexed. Their inclusion in tins \olume would, Lhererore. serve no useful purpose The commentary is confined to the Ottoman Land Code, ihough of course the notes contain frequent references to subsequent legislation. It differs lrom the ordinary legal text book in that it does not contain references to decided cases. 7 his is due to the fact that, in the absence of an adequate system of law reporting, it is impossible to ascertain either, what decisions have been passed, or what decisions are operative on any given point. -

Nedîm‟in târîhleri devrini aydınlatması bakımından önemlidir. Bu tez çalışmasında Nedîm‟in özellikle târîhlerindeki mimari tasvirler tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca Nedîm‟in dört kasidesindeki ve Şevk-âbâd hakkında yazdığı nazmındaki mimari tasvirler üzerinde çalışılmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Lâle Devri‟nin ruhunu günümüze taşıyan Nedîm‟in, devrinde inşa edilen mimari eserleri algılama ve bunu şiirlerine yansıtma tarzını irdelemektir. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Lazy, the Idle, the Industrious: Discourse and Practice of Work and Productivity in Late Ottoman Society A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Melis Hafez 2012 © Copyright by Melis Hafez 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Lazy, the Idle, the Industrious: Discourse and Practice of Work and Productivity in Late Ottoman Society by Melis Hafez Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor James L. Gelvin, Chair This dissertation traces the establishment of a binary between work and laziness from 1839 to 1920, the last century of the Ottoman Empire. Over this period, Ottoman society experienced an epochal shift in the discourses and practices of work. This study examines this shift, first, by exploring how concepts of work and productivity were moralized, socially practiced, militarized and politicized in a non-European modernity project, and second, by demonstrating how this emergent discourse, formulated as an issue of ‘national’ importance, became a constitutive element of the general nation-formation process within the last Ottoman century. I examine the configuration and development of the moralistic discourse of an ‘Islamic work ethic’ as an integral part of creating productive citizens. To do this, I consult an underutilized source, morality books, which display the connection between the mobilization for productivity, modern ii conceptualizations of body and time, and nation formation. Emphasizing the role of social practice in emergent discourses, I investigate how the bureaucratic reforms of the state in the last Ottoman century played a pivotal role in the transformation of concepts and practices of work. -
Plague of 1900 and the Economic Effect on the Overseas Commerce of Izmir
Tarih İncelemeleri Dergisi XXXV / 1, 2020, 383-403 DOI: 10.18513/egetid.770023 PLAGUE OF 1900 AND THE ECONOMIC EFFECT ON THE OVERSEAS COMMERCE OF IZMIR Emine ZEYTİNLİ* Abstract Domestic economic activities and international commerce of Izmir were severely impaired by the strict quarantine of 1900 adopted against the presence of plague. However, the plague cases were very few, strict quarantine measures imposed. The epidemic and then quarantine left a major impact on the economy of Izmir and conflicts arose between the health commission, local and foreign merchants. All business-related activities such as labour movements, shipping services, foreign trading operations and business meetings suffered. Archival documents report that unemployment soared and scarcity of food started to become a major problem and meetings were organised to protest the situation. This paper aims to analyse the economic effects of the epidemic of 1900 by focusing on the decline in commercial operations and economy. Ottoman archival documents, Ottoman Yearbooks (salname) of Izmir as well as British consular reports are used for that purpose. Keywords: Izmir, plague, quarantine, economic decline, overseas trade. Öz 1900 Yılı Veba Salgını ve İzmir’in Dış Ticaretine Etkileri 1900 yılında İzmir’de baş gösteren veba salgını İzmir ve çevresi illerin ekonomik faaliyetlerini ve dış ticaretini olumsuz etkilemiştir. Hükümetin ve yerel otoritelerin ağır karantina tedbirleri aldığı iddia edilen uygulamalardan İzmir ekonomisi olumsuz etkilenmiş, karantina komisyonu ile yerli ve yabancı tüccarların uygulamaların anlaşmazlığa düşmesine neden olmuştur. İş gücü hareketleri, denizcilik hizmetleri ve dış ticaret gibi bütün iktisadi faaliyetler karantina tedbirlerinde olumsuz etkilenmiştir. Osmanlı Arşivi belgeleri karantina sırasında işsizliğin arttığını, gıda kıtlığı baş göstermeye başladığını, tedbirler aleyhine toplantılar düzenlendiğini ve halkın valilik binasına yürüdüğünü yazmaktadır. -
ICRP Calendar
The notions of International Relations (IR) in capital letters and international relations (ir) in lowercase letters have two different meanings. The first refers to a scholarly discipline while the second one means a set of contemporary events with historical importance, which influences global-politics. In order to make observations, formulate theories and describe patterns within the framework of ‘IR’, one needs to fully comprehend specific events related to ‘ir’. It is why the Institute for Cultural Relations Policy (ICRP) believes that a timeline on which all the significant events of international relations are identified might be beneficial for students, scholars or professors who deal with International Relations. In the following document all the momentous wars, treaties, pacts and other happenings are enlisted with a monthly division, which had considerable impact on world-politics. January 1800 | Nationalisation of the Dutch East Indies The Dutch East Indies was a Dutch colony that became modern Indonesia following World War II. It was formed 01 from the nationalised colonies of the Dutch East India Company, which came under the administration of the Dutch government in 1800. 1801 | Establishment of the United Kingdom On 1 January 1801, the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland united to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Most of Ireland left the union as the Irish Free State in 1922, leading to the remaining state being renamed as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1927. 1804 | Haiti independence declared The independence of Haiti was recognized by France on 17 April 1825. -
14-Young Turks Movement, Tahirkamran
Young Turks Movement & 1908 Revolution Dr. Tahir Kamran ∗ (1) Generally decline as a phenomenon evokes more than one responses from those who are racked by it. In a bid to stall the impending collapse from the position of strength and glory, resorting back to tradition is very common prescription. By doing so, it is believed that by way of adopting the past practices, history can be made to repeat itself. Therefore in the day when decline set in, the proponents as well as the followers of the tradition drew lot of attention and support from the masses. Therefore the days when decline set in, the proponents as well as the followers of the tradition generally drew lot of attention as well as support from the masses. Here the statement must be qualified particularly with reference to “the masses”. The word “the masses’ specifically denotes the literate people being influenced by the print culture, coming to vogue during the British rule. Puritanical responses in the form of Deobandi Movement 1 or Wahabism 2, professing strict adherence to the pristine injunctions of Islam resonated similar sort of perception that was in circulation among the Muslims of the Sub Continent, exemplify that proclivity. The exponents of that traditional streak had been the trenchant critics of the western modernity, unleashed in South Asia through the ∗ Chairman, Department of History, Government College University, Lahore. 1 For detailed study of Deoband see Barbara D. The Environment and Early Influences Shaping Political Thought of Niyazi Berkes in British Cyprus, 1908-1922*
The Environment and Early Influences Shaping Political Thought of Niyazi Berkes in British Cyprus, 1908-1922* Şakir Dinçşahin Yeditepe University Abstract Niyazi Berkes was born on 21 September 1908 in Nicosia/Lefkoşa, the capital of Cyprus. Naturally, his intellectual personality began to be shaped by the social and political context on the island as well as the empire which was in the process of imperial change. As a result of the turmoil created by the British rule, the Young Turk Revolution, the First World War, and the Turkish national struggle, the Greek and the Turkish identities for the Orthodox and the Muslim communities, respectively, were constructed. Niyazi Berkes, who was born and raised in this turbulent period, developed the Turkish national identity that laid the foundations of his patriotism among the Muslim community. But in the early years of his long life, the social and political context of Cyprus also planted the seeds of his liberal-mindedness. Key Words: Niyazi Berkes, Nationalism, National Identity, British Rule, Young Turks, World War I, Turkish National Struggle. -
