A book is read by how many people? Some observations on readers and reading modes in the Ottoman Empire1 Tülün Değirmenci2 The use of books is among the numerous subjects broached by Christoph Neumann in his stimulating article on writing and reading in the Ottoman Empire, printed in the first issue of Tarih ve Toplum.3 Neumann writes that in the Ottoman world, the primary use of books was, obviously, to be read. However, they were also used as reference books, and as such were not read from start to end, and were also kept as objects of prestige. Neumann states that little more is known about how the Ottomans used their books and that we can only speculate that it was a widespread tradition to read the relatively few manuscripts in circulation aloud. He believes the aim of reading aloud was twofold: to memorize the text, and to enrich and edit the text, which could also be a way of subsequently adding it to a private journal. He then delves into the prefaces of manuscripts to enumerate the reasons why a writer may write. Claiming that the first reason is the author's wish for his work to be widely known, he asks the following question: How can a person living in a manuscript culture expect everyone to know a text? This motive gains meaning when seen as focusing on the text, rather than on the interlocutor and reader. Military failures made the social and economic problems worse. In this situation, alternative potentials in the empire appeared because of the increasing military needs of the central government and the provincial governors. By the way, general employment of the Albanian warriors who were famous with their courage and strength became possible.1 There were a lot of reasons for employing Albanian warriors with salary while there was Ottoman regular army corps, including janissaries and soldiers from the states. Governing problems, had existed in the states and land system after the defeat in Vienne at 1683, was one of these reasons. Also after the end of the conquering era, the castles and fortresses at the borderlines were built for defense and there were not a necessary number of soldiers in these buildings. This problem was tried to by employing the warriors with long- matchlock-guns from Bosnia, Herzegovina and Albania.2 During the time, the necessity of mercenary increased too much as seen in the example of the Ottoman army which established for pressing the Greek Revolt in 1821, was almost composed of the Albanian soldiers.3 There were historical reasons for choosing Albanian soldiers in the Balkans. A strong feudal-system had existed in the Albanian lands before the Ottoman rule. This social structure, which consisted of the local connections and obedience around the lords, continued by integrating, first, timar (fief) system after the Ottoman conquest in 1385 and then, devshirme system. -

Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2019 Harun Buljina All rights reserved ABSTRACT Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina This dissertation is a study of the early 20th-century Pan-Islamist reform movement in Bosnia-Herzegovina, tracing its origins and trans-imperial development with a focus on the years 1901-1914. Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires. -

This top-down approach allows us to understand only incompletely the transformation of the Islamic religious scene and the relation- ship between state and religion. Here, I take the case of interwar Albania and de- center the analysis in studying the development of the Tijaniyya—a strongly ortho- dox North-African brotherhood which spread in this country after 1900—and examine the position of its members in the Islamic religious circles. The spread of this brotherhood was probably stimulated by the interference from the state in the religious sphere, which led to a transfer of the religious vitality to a sector which escaped to the state tutelage. The integration of several members of the Tijaniyya at the heart of the official structures of the Islamic Community in 1930 in order to control them, contributed to an Islamic revival from within the new reformed Islamic institutions, at a time when these institutions seemed more rationalized, controlled and secularized. -

Remembering to Forget: Sabbateanism, National Identity, and Subjectivity in Turkey LEYLA NEYZI Sabancı University I was seven or eight years old. We were walking in Taksim [a neighborhood in Istanbul] with a close friend of my parents I called “aunt.” Accompanying us was an acquaintance of my aunt. There had been some kind of talk about where we were from. “We are from Salonica,” I declared with confidence. In my eyes, being from Salonica was no differ- ent than being from Istanbul. When we came home, my aunt pulled me aside. She said, “From now on, you will never say ‘I am from Salonica’ to someone you don’t know. This is very demeaning, people will look down upon you.” I started to cry, protesting, “Why?” All kinds of evil words came rushing to my child’s mind. Were they thieves? Were they immoral? Why should we be ashamed? According to Fatma Arıg˘, a fifty-one-year-old Turkish woman of Sabbatean heritage, her search for the past began with this shock she recalls experiencing as a child. Her quest was fulfilled by way of history, for lack of memory. Be- hind her story lies a little-known community, and its three hundred and fifty- year-old relationship with the state and the dominant society in Turkey. Sabbateanism, known in Turkish as dönme (“convert”) or Selanikli (“being from Salonica”), refers to the followers of Sabbatai Sevi, a Jewish rabbi from Izmir (Smyrna) who declared himself the messiah in the seventeenth century, initiating a messianic movement that divided the Jewish community. -

I was of course encouraged by the positive trend of continuing group research on the history of Levantines. This work is also aimed as a message to encourage the preservation of the architectural and historical heritage of the city of Istanbul and I am grateful for the help from friends and the efficient assistance of my offices in both cities. The Baltazzi famiy, although since the XVIIIth century were living in Izmir have also maintained close relations from that time with the capital Istanbul due to their business activites in finance and banking as well as due their close relations with the Ottoman Court. Some other Levantive and Greek families such as the Whittals, the La Fontaines, the Mavrogordato, the Sevastopoulos to cite a few also acquired a range of proprieties and hade members of these numerous families resident in both cities and various neighbourhoods. 1- HOUSES The emminent authority on Ottoman Banking History Pr. Akylas Millas in his “Pera Crossroads of Constantinople” gives as location the Bonmarche at Istanbul Grand Rue de Pera (today Istiklal Caddesi of Beyoğlu) saying “The Bartoli brothers famous for Au Bon Marche department store occupied the ground floor of a neo-classical building erected in 1870 on the site of the residence of Manolaki Valtadji efendi which burnt in the frequent fires which occurred in Pera”. -
