Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

PALMA ABSTRACT Authenticated records of chewing (feather) lice, largely from unpub- lished observations, are listed from birds in the New Zealand zoogeo- graphic subregion, including the Ross Dependency in Antarctica. From a total of 388 host taxa (including 38 introductions), lice are reported from 250 hosts (including 27 introductions). These records comprise 267 lice species and subspecies; a further 138 recordsare listed at generic level only, but a11 these do not necessarily represent separate species. Although some bird groups have been collected from frequently, there are many gaps in our knowledge, even for thesehosts. With someorders (e.g. Passeriformes) and families of birds, little or no attention has been paid to their ectopara- sites. An appeal is made for assistance in building up collections. INTRODUCTION The New Zealand bird fauna is broadly characterised by the endemic order Aptervgiforrnes and, in comparison with other faunas, the exceptionally high proportion of tasa in the orders Procellariiformes and Sphenisciformes and in the family Phalacrotoracidae (Pelecaniformes) (Pilgrim, 1980). Since the genera of chewing (feather) lice are, in general terms, associated with particular groups of hosts, the louse fauna shows correspondingly a disproportionate representation of lice on the foregoing host groups. -

Pacific Insects Vol. 20, no. 1: 5-17 30 January 1979 CATALOG OF ENTOMOLOGICAL TYPES IN THE BISHOP MUSEUM Mallophaga By JoAnn M. Tenorio1 Abstract: This catalog lists the holotypes of 66 species and allotypes of 18 species of Mallophaga deposited in the Bishop Museum. Locality data are provided, as are corrected or confirmed host identifications, for many ofthe types. The Mallophaga collection in the Bishop Museum contains approximately 500 named species identified by specialists, preserved on some 6000 slides and in alcohol. The actual number of identified specimens is many more than would be indicated by the number of slides because of the practice of mounting a specimen of each sex side by side on the same slide. Much additional material is identified only to generic level. The bulk ofthe collection derives from New Guinea and the Solomons, the Pacific Basin, and the Oriental Region. Particularly extensive collections from New Guinea are still being studied and a large collection of Philippine Mallophaga is virtually unworked. This catalog includes holotypes and allotypes of all species actually or reportedly deposited in the Bishop Museum. The type collection comprises holotypes of 66 species, with allotypes associated with 18 of these. Paratypes are not included herein; the collection houses paratypes of more than 75 species. Approximately 72% ofthe primary types are from New Guinea and the Solomons. The format follows that outlined in the Introduction to the Bishop Museum En tomological Type Catalog by Radovsky et al. (1976). Names are listed as originally published and are entered alphabetically under families, also arranged in alphabetical order. -
The Endangered Kiwi: a Review

Interest in ratites has necessitated a review of available information on the unique endangered kiwi (Apteryx spp.). Five different species of kiwis, endemic to the three islands of New Zealand, are recognized by the Department of Conservation, New Zealand, according to genetic and biological differences: the North Island Brown Kiwi (Apteryx mantelli), Okarito Brown Kiwi/Rowi (A. rowi), Tokoeka (A. australis), Great Spotted Kiwi/Roroa (A. haastii), and Little Spotted Kiwi (A owenii). As predators were found to be the main reason for declining kiwi numbers, predator control is a main objective of management techniques to prevent kiwis becoming extinct in New Zealand. Further considerations include captive breeding and release, and establishment of kiwi sanctuaries. Body size and bill measurements are different between species and genders within species. Kiwis have the lowest basal rates of metabolism compared with all avian standards. A relative low body temperature (38 ºC), burrowing, a highly developed sense of smell, paired ovaries in females, and a low growth rate, separate kiwis from other avian species. Kiwis have long-term partnerships. Females lay an egg that is approximately 400 % above the allometrically expected value, with an incubation period of 75–85 days. Kiwis mainly feed on soil invertebrate, with the main constituent being earthworms, and are prone to parasites and diseases found in other avian species. -

Peru is one of the countries with the highest diversity of birds worldwide, having about 1,876 species in its territory. However, studies focused on chewing lice (Phthiraptera) have been carried out on only a minority of bird species. The available data are distributed in 87 publications in the national and international literature. In this checklist we summarize all the records to date of chewing lice on wild and domestic birds in Peru. Among the 301 species of birds studied, 266 species of chewing lice were recorded. The localities with the highest records were the Departments of Cusco, Junín, Lima and Madre de Dios. No records of birds pa- rasitized by these lice have been found in seven departments of Peru. Studies related to lice have only been reported in 16 % of bird species in the country, indicating that research concerning chewing lice has not yet been performed for the the majority of birds in Peru. Checklist of the Mallophaga of North America (north of Mexico), which reflects the taxonomic studies published since that date. Host criteria for the birds has been expanded to include consideration of all species listed in The A. 0. U. Check- list of North American Birds, Fifth Edition (1957)~A few species of birds definitely known to be extinct are omitted for the listings of probable hosts, even though new species may still be found on museum skins. Mammal hosts considered remain those Irecorded in Miller and Kellogg, List of North American Recent Mammals (1955), as being found north of Mexico. If the present volume of taxonomic studies of Mallophaga continues, another revision will be necessary in a few years. Much remains to be done on the taxonomy of several genera and host groups, especially the forms found on the Passeriformes . Benvenuto Cellini about 500 years ago INTRODUCTION For more than 40 years, working with lice (Mallophaga and Anoplura) has been one of the great pleasures of my life. My research has been interesting. It has been a pleasure to assist others under- stand the taxonomy, ecology and distribution of lice so that they can share my interest and then conduct research on their own. I have been able to provide good collections to The K. C. Emerson Entomology Museum at Oklahoma State University so that students there will not have to spend time in Washington, D.
