The geographical range of the typically host-specific species of chewing lice (Phthiraptera) is often assumed to be similar to that of their hosts. We tested this assumption by reviewing the published records of twelve species of chewing lice parasitizing wild and domestic chicken, one of few bird species that occurs globally. We found that of the twelve species reviewed, eight appear to occur throughout the range of the host. This includes all the species considered to be native to wild chicken, except Oxylipeurus dentatus (Sugimoto, 1934). This species has only been reported from the native range of wild chicken in Southeast Asia and from parts of Central America and the Caribbean, where the host is introduced. -

SWW TO M"7-5001 PREFACE This volume is essentially a revision of my 1964 publication, Checklist of the Mallophaga of North America (north of Mexico), which reflects the taxonomic studies published since that date. Host criteria for the birds has been expanded to include consideration of all species listed in The A. 0. U. Checklist of North American Birds. Fifth Edition (1957). A few species of birds definitely known to be extinct are omitted from the listings of probable hosts, even though new species may still be found on museum skins. Mammal hosts considered remain those recorded in Millsr and Kellogg, List of North American Recent Mammals (1955), as; being found north of Mexico. Dr. Theresa Clay, British Museum (Natural History), ar.d especially Dr. Roger D. Price, University of Minnesota, during the last few years, have reviewed several genera of the Menoporidae; however, several of the larger genera are still in need of review. Unfortunately this volume could not be delayed until work on these genera is completed. Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history. -

ANDERSON CANADA Mike Morris (retired) September 1992, Poland CURCULIO EDITORIAL COMMENTS Yes, this number of CURCULIO is late. It should have been prepared and sent out in September of 1996, but our museum has been going through a move to new facilities and things have been in turmoil. We are now settled in and most services are up and running again. The collections, which were packed away for the move, are also now accessible again. Seems that things went quite well and in fact our Entomology section fared quite well as the move into our new facilities resulted in a great deal more space than we already had. We’re now getting the laboratories prepared and should be back to full speed in the near future. Our mailing address has not changed! On another note, congratulations are in order for Rolf Oberprieler who has accepted the weevil systematics position at CSIRO in Canberra, Australia. This will be a great new challenge for Rolf and one in which we can all be sure he will fare admirably. The Australian weevil fauna is exceptionally diverse and interesting and with the recent books by Elwood Zimmerman, a great base has been set for further and more detailed work on the fauna. I understand Rolf will be there sometime this summer. Now all he has to do is master ‘G’Day’ and ‘mate’ and he’ll have it made! Best wishes to Rolf and his family. -

New taxa are: Myrsidea darwini new species (type host Geospiza fuliginosa Gould, Emberizidae); Myrsidea nesomimi nesomimi new species and subspecies (type host Nesomimus macdonaldi Ridgway, Mimidae); and Myrsidea nesomimi borealis new subspecies (type host Nesomimus parvulus (Gould), Mimidae). Myrsidea ridulosa (Kellogg & Chapman) is recorded for the first time in the Galápagos Islands, from Dendroica petechia aureola (Gould) (Parulidae). Myrsidea nesomimi is the first species of Myrsidea described from members of the family Mimidae. Additionally, further 550 louse species (and subspecies) are also listed, whose occurrence is likely as judged from geographic and host distribution but have not been detected yet. INTRODUCTION Hungary’s sucking louse (Phthiraptera: Anoplura) fauna was summa- rized by PIOTROWSKI (1970). The chewing louse (Phthiraptera: Amblycera, Ischnocera) fauna was evaluated in two checklists (RÉKÁSI 1993a, 1994) summarizing data for avian and mammalian hosts separately. Subsequently, more recent world checklists for sucking lice (DURDEN &MUSSER 1994) and for chewing lice (PRICE et al. 2003) critically reviewed the nomenclature, taxonomy and host-parasite relationships of this insect order as a whole. -

For this aim, 31 bird specimens belonging to 23 bird species which were injured or died were examined for the louse infestation. Firstly, the feathers of each bird were inspected macroscopically, all observed louse specimens were collected and then the examined birds were treated with a synthetic pyrethroid spray (Biyo avispray-Biyoteknik®). The collected lice were placed into the tubes with 70% alcohol and mounted on slides with Canada balsam after being cleared in KOH 10%. Then the collected chewing lice were identified under the light microscobe. Eleven out of totally 31 (35.48%) birds were found to be infested with at least one chewing louse species. Eighteen lice species were found belonging to 16 genera on infested birds. Thirteen of 18 lice species; Actornithophilus piceus piceus (Denny, 1842); Anaticola phoenicopteri (Coincide, 1859); Anatoecus pygaspis (Nitzsch, 1866); Colpocephalum heterosoma Piaget, 1880; C. polonum Eichler and Zlotorzycka, 1971; Fulicoffula lurida (Nitzsch, 1818); Incidifrons fulicia (Linnaeus, 1758); Meromenopon meropis Clay ve Meinertzhagen, 1941; Meropoecus meropis (Denny, 1842); Pseudomenopon pilosum (Scopoli, 1763); Rallicola fulicia (Denny, 1842); Saemundssonia lari Fabricius, O, 1780), and Trinoton femoratum Piaget, 1889 have been recorded from Turkey for the first time. -

Eighty-one bird specimens of 23 species were examined for lice infestation. All lice collected from the birds were placed in separate tubes with 70% alcohol. Louse specimens were cleared in 10% KOH, mounted in Canada balsam on glass slides and identified under a binocular light microscope. Sixteen out of 81 birds examined (19,75%) were infested with at least one chewing louse specimens. A total of 13 louse species were found on birds. These were: Austromenopon durisetosum (Blagoveshtchensky, 1948), Actornithophilus multisetosus (Blagoveshtchensky, 1940), Anaticola crassicornis (Scopoli, 1763), Cummingsiella ambigua (Burmeister, 1838), Menacanthus alaudae (Schrank, 1776), Menacanthus curuccae (Schrank, 1776), Menacanthus eurysternus (Burmeister, 1838), Menacanthus pusillus (Niztsch, 1866), Meromenopon meropis (Clay&Meinertzhagen, 1941), Myrsidea picae (Linnaeus, 1758), Pseudomenopon scopulacorne (Denny, 1842), Rhynonirmus scolopacis (Denny, 1842), and Trinoton querquedulae (Linnaeus, 1758). -

We flew from Delhi to Guwahati, located in the far northeast of India. A long drive later through the hectic traffic of this enjoyable country, we arrived at our lodge in the evening. (Photo by tour participant Robert Warren) We enjoyed three full days of the wildlife and avifauna spectacles of the famous Kaziranga National Park. This park is one of the last easily accessible places to find the endangered Indian One-horned Rhinoceros together with a healthy population of Asian Elephant and Asiatic Wild Buffalo. We saw plenty individuals of all species; the rhino especially made an impression on all of us. It is such an impressive piece of evolution, a serious armored “tank”! On two mornings we loved the elephant rides provided by the park; on the back of these attractive animals we came very close to the rhinos. The fertile flood plains of the park consist of alluvial silts, exposed sandbars, and riverine flood-formed lakes called Beels. This open habitat is not only good for mammals but definitely a true gem for some great birds. Interesting but common birds included Bar-headed Goose, Red Junglefowl, Woolly-necked Stork, and Lesser Adjutant, while the endangered Greater Adjutant and Black-necked Stork were good hits in the stork section. -

Box 844, Ames, Iowa 50010, 1 Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota 55108, and 4 Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, Okeechobee, Florida 34974 ABSTRACT: Thirty fulvous whistling-ducks (Dendrocygna bicolor) collected during 1984-1985 from the Ever- glades Agricultural Area of southern Florida were examined for parasites. Twenty-eight species were identified and included 8 trematodes, 6 cestodes, 1 nematode, 4 chewing lice, and 9 mites. All parasites except the 4 species of lice and 1 of the mites are new host records for fulvous whistling-ducks. None of the ducks were infected with blood parasites. Every duck was infected with at least 2 species of helminths (mean 4.2; range 2- 8 species). The most common helminths were the trematodes Echinostoma trivolvis and Typhlocoelum cucu- merinum and 2 undescribed cestodes of the genus Diorchis, which occurred in prevalences of 67, 63, 50, and 50%, respectively. Only 1 duck was free of parasitic arthropods; each of the other 29 ducks was infested with at least 3 species of arthropods (mean 5.3; range 3-9 species). The most common arthropods included an undescribed feather mite (Ingrassia sp.) and the chewing louse Holomenopon leucoxanthum, both of which occurred in 97% of the ducks. -

Mikko Pyhälä mikko.pyhala(a)kolumbus.fi 17.01.2013 Report on birds seen in Goa, India November 5-9, 2013 Flame- throated Bulbul India is an excellent country to observe birds which mostly are not terribly afraid of human beings, because there is so li9le, if any hun:ng. By and large, Indians are tolerant of wildlife, even in densely habited areas. Good guidebooks are available, but English language names of birds have recently changed somewhat, and also some La:n names have been changed when species have been split and redefined. The Western Ghats, a coastal mountain range from Goa to Kerala, is a hotspot of endemism, in fact one of the most important centres of endemism in the world. A temporary ban on new mining projects has given relief to many good birding areas, including officially gaze9ed sanctuaries. Thanks to the generous invita:on by our long-:me friend, Danish diplomat Peter Mark, some 20 of his friends we gathered in the southern :p of North Goa at Sinquerim, with Marbella Guesthouse as our base. Some of us like Peter, his girlfriend Bodil Nydal Engell, and Birte Poulsen, and me, have been birding for ages. Several others joined walks and excursions, some for the first :me in their life, and enjoyed it.
