Despite having a rich avifauna in Iran, limited number of studies have been conducted on lice fauna of wild birds in this region. This study was carried out to identify lice species of passerine birds in East of Iran. A total of 106 passerine birds of 37 species were captured. Their bodies were examined for lice infestation. Fifty two birds (49.05%) of 106 captured birds were infested. Gondvanocoleus n. gen. differs from other members of the family Asiocoleidae in having only one row of cells in the middle part of the elytral field 3 and in having unorganized cells not forming rows near the elytral apex. Further relationships of the new genus with other asiocoleids are discussed. The fossil record of the Asiocoleidae is briefly overviewed. For this aim, 31 bird specimens belonging to 23 bird species which were injured or died were examined for the louse infestation. Firstly, the feathers of each bird were inspected macroscopically, all observed louse specimens were collected and then the examined birds were treated with a synthetic pyrethroid spray (Biyo avispray-Biyoteknik®). The collected lice were placed into the tubes with 70% alcohol and mounted on slides with Canada balsam after being cleared in KOH 10%. Then the collected chewing lice were identified under the light microscobe. Eleven out of totally 31 (35.48%) birds were found to be infested with at least one chewing louse species. Eighteen lice species were found belonging to 16 genera on infested birds. Thirteen of 18 lice species; Actornithophilus piceus piceus (Denny, 1842); Anaticola phoenicopteri (Coincide, 1859); Anatoecus pygaspis (Nitzsch, 1866); Colpocephalum heterosoma Piaget, 1880; C. polonum Eichler and Zlotorzycka, 1971; Fulicoffula lurida (Nitzsch, 1818); Incidifrons fulicia (Linnaeus, 1758); Meromenopon meropis Clay ve Meinertzhagen, 1941; Meropoecus meropis (Denny, 1842); Pseudomenopon pilosum (Scopoli, 1763); Rallicola fulicia (Denny, 1842); Saemundssonia lari Fabricius, O, 1780), and Trinoton femoratum Piaget, 1889 have been recorded from Turkey for the first time. -

Eighty-one bird specimens of 23 species were examined for lice infestation. All lice collected from the birds were placed in separate tubes with 70% alcohol. Louse specimens were cleared in 10% KOH, mounted in Canada balsam on glass slides and identified under a binocular light microscope. Sixteen out of 81 birds examined (19,75%) were infested with at least one chewing louse specimens. A total of 13 louse species were found on birds. These were: Austromenopon durisetosum (Blagoveshtchensky, 1948), Actornithophilus multisetosus (Blagoveshtchensky, 1940), Anaticola crassicornis (Scopoli, 1763), Cummingsiella ambigua (Burmeister, 1838), Menacanthus alaudae (Schrank, 1776), Menacanthus curuccae (Schrank, 1776), Menacanthus eurysternus (Burmeister, 1838), Menacanthus pusillus (Niztsch, 1866), Meromenopon meropis (Clay&Meinertzhagen, 1941), Myrsidea picae (Linnaeus, 1758), Pseudomenopon scopulacorne (Denny, 1842), Rhynonirmus scolopacis (Denny, 1842), and Trinoton querquedulae (Linnaeus, 1758). -

The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

Dawson PSOCOPTERA Barkflies and Booklice (also sometimes referred to as Psocids) Small insects (1.5 – 7mm) with a domed postclypeus (the area at the front of the head between antennae and mouth); long filiform antennae; simple wing venation with two ‘triangular’ cells at tip of forewing; tendency to run rather than fly. Winged barkflies usually hold their wings tent-wise over their abdomens like miniature lacewings. These species can be confused with Psyllids but can be distinguished by gently touching them – psyllids jump away, barkflies don’t. Stenopsocus immaculatus – a common species in Beds. Note the strongly domed postclypeus and long filiform antennae Barkflies - Variations on a theme Some species don’t have full-sized (macropterous) wings but have them much reduced (brachypterous) or absent (apterous). They can be confused with springtails (which however will jump away when touched). Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Fort Collins, CO 80521 Abstract: We are just now beginning to learn about the ectoparasites and helminth parasites of some owls of Oklahoma. Some recent contributions from our lab have attempted to help fill a previous void in that information. Here, we report, four taxa of ectoparasites and five helminth parasites from three species of owls in Oklahoma. They include two species of chewing lice (Strigiphilus syrnii and Kurodeia magna), two species of hippoboscid flies (Icosta americana and Ornithoica vicina), a trematode (Strigea elegans) and a cestode (Paruterina candelabraria) from barred owls (Strix varia), and three nematodes, Porrocaecum depressum from an eastern screech owl (Megascops asio), Capillaria sp. eggs from S. varia, and Capillaria tenuissima from a great horned owl (Bubo virginianus). Many of these ectoparasites have severe negative effects on host fitness. It is therefore not surprising that selection on birds has favored a variety of possible adaptations for dealing with ectoparasites. The functional signifi- cance of some of these defenses has been well documented. Others have barely been studied, much less tested rigorously. In this article we review the evidence - or lack thereof - for many of the purported mechanisms birds have for dealing with ectoparasites. We concentrate on features of the plumage and its components, as well as anti-parasite behaviors. In some cases, we present original data from our own recent work. We make recommendations for future studies that could im- prove our understanding of this poorly known aspect of avian biology.
